$5 Million - Madison Protests, Dysfunction

Leftists certainly know how to waste money.

So far, their protests have come at a high price for taxpayers. The security cost is $5 million.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

With total law enforcement costs reaching as much as $5 million, state Administration Secretary Michael Huebsch said Wednesday that he hopes to soon get the Capitol to a point where there is more and freer public access.

That can't come soon enough for the Wisconsin State Employees Union, some legislators, staff and others who have charged Gov. Scott Walker's administration with severely restricting access to the building and ignoring a temporary restraining order issued Tuesday.

The Wisconsin State Employees Union is seeking a temporary injunction that would force the state to increase public access.

Dane County Circuit Judge John Albert briefly considered issuing an order that would have forced the removal of an estimated 107 protesters who remain in the Capitol rotunda.

Albert said he drafted the order after hearing testimony from officials at the state Department of Administration that access to the Capitol would be increased if those living there left voluntarily.

Attorneys for both sides agreed Albert's order would be unworkable.

While the daylong hearing continued, several Democratic members of the Assembly moved desks and chairs from their offices outside to meet with constituents on Wednesday afternoon.

"We are out here because our governor and the Department of Administration are ignoring a judge's court order," said Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca (D-Kenosha.).

Dane County Circuit Judge Daniel R. Moeser issued a temporary restraining order on Tuesday to open the Capitol. Albert took up the case Tuesday afternoon.

Rep. Fred Clark (D-Baraboo) said he brought his desk outside about 2:20 p.m.

"If we have to go outside of the building to do our business, we'll do it," Clark said.

Bringing their desks outside was such a lame bit of political theatrics.

I'm concerned about this moving of their desks out of the Capitol building. Their next move might be to Illinois, like their cowardly Democrat colleagues in the Wisconsin State Senate.

I'm so sick of the Democrats and their games. Their stunts, always thoroughly documented by the lib media always quick to oblige, are so childish.

They should grow up and do their jobs.

...In his testimony Wednesday, Huebsch said that at least 35 law enforcement agencies had assisted Capitol police. At the peak of the protests, more than 400 officers were on duty. He said later he was worried he couldn't rely on additional police from other departments for much longer.

Huebsch said an estimated $2.1 million had been spent on wages and overtime for officers, with anywhere from $4 to $5 million in total law enforcement costs.

Although some witnesses said the Capitol crowds were respectful and tried to keep the building clean, Huebsch described it differently.

"The Capitol was becoming an unlivable, unusable facility," he said.

This is nauseating.

The $5 million price tag for all the disruption caused by the protesters and union agitators and socialists is very hefty.

That price doesn't cover the cost of all the damage the protesters have done to the Capitol building and the grounds.

And the Democrats in the Assembly encourage them.

They are a stunningly irresponsible group of lawmakers.

I expect the state legislature to do the work the people elected them to do.

This is a very costly circus, $5 million and counting.

I gave the Dems way too much credit. I didn't think they would be willing to go to such extremes to obstruct.

It's really disheartening to see what the protesters, Dems/union members, and socialists have done, complete dysfunction.

The Dem legislators stole my vote. At this point, the 2010 election was meaningless because the arrogant, selfish Dems aren't playing by the rules.

This is such a disgraceful chapter in our history.

What do the Dems want? They won't abide by the results of the election. Do they want anarchy?

I just want my vote to count.
