A Democratic congresswoman showed solidarity with the victims of the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris earlier this month after President Obama referenced the deadly terror attacks during his State of the Union address on Tuesday night.

Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wis., held up a pencil when Obama referenced the attack in his speech. The pencil has emerged as a symbol of free speech in the face of Islamist terror that seeks to quell criticism or mockery of the Prophet Muhammad, a frequent target of the satirical magazine.

"Rather than divide and intimidate us, these brazen and barbaric attacks have united the international community and prompted a global response in defense of the freedom of expression," Moore's office said in a statement. "The congresswoman believes that this is unique opportunity to join our global partners in showing our collective support and solidarity."

Obama talked about terrorism in his speech, but he managed to avoid saying anything about radical Islam.

He said "ISIL" twice, stating that the U.S. is "stopping ISIL's advance."

Pope Francis would hit someone if that person cursed his mother? Really?

Pope Francis began his visit to Asia's largest Catholic nation Thursday with a provocative statement about one of Europe's largest Catholic nations: Referring to the Paris attacks, Francis said there are limits to freedom of expression, especially when it insults or ridicules someone's faith.

...Francis defended freedom of speech as a fundamental right, and even a duty to speak out for the common good. But he said there were limits to free speech, especially when confronting another equally fundamental human right: the freedom of religion.

By way of example, he referred to Alberto Gasbarri, who organizes papal trips and was standing by his side aboard the papal plane.

"If my good friend Dr. Gasbarri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch," Francis said jokingly, throwing a pretend punch his way. "It's normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others."

He by no means said the violent attack on Charlie Hebdo was justified. Quite the opposite, he said such horrific violence in God's name couldn't be justified and was an "aberration." But he said a reaction of some kind was to be expected.

Of course, there are limits to free speech, the old "shouting fire in a crowded theater" example.

I would expect the Pope to suggest people "Do to others as you would have them do to you."

I don't expect the Pope to say he'd punch a guy if he cursed his mother.

Is the Pope really that lacking in self-control? Come on. What about turning the other cheek?

It sounds as if the Pope doesn't think people are very capable of acting like Jesus, as if living the Gospel is expecting too much.

Take note, little Catholic kids. Punch your brother when he takes your toy and tell your mom and dad that the Pope says it's normal. It's OK.

Weird.

The right thing to do is to not be cruel and to not insult someone. But I certainly believe people have the right to be free to say what they want without fear of being KILLED!

Ridiculing someone, even about one's faith, is not the same as taking a life.

Islamic terrorism is most definitely not normal, civilized human behavior. It's not a normal reaction to a cartoon.

In terms of reaction, I'm sure the 17 slaughtered by the Islamists in Paris would have preferred being punched. Some of those killed in the Paris attacks were just bystanders, totally innocent.

I'm praying for Pope Francis. May God give the Holy Father the strength and wisdom to speak more like Jesus and less like Joe Biden.

CNN employs a different standard when it comes to offending Catholics and Christians. CNN has an "open season" policy when it comes to showing offensive images of the Savior, Jesus Christ, and Mary, the Mother of God.

Two images that are certainly "potentially offensive" to Christians are currently on CNN's website.

In a gallery of "10 works of art that shocked the world," CNN displays Piss Christ, an image of a crucifix submerged in the artist's urine, and The Holy Virgin Mary, an image of Mary, Mother of God, surrounded by cut-outs from porn magazines and elephant dung.

Of course, no images of "the prophet" are included. That would violate CNN's policy.

Not all Leftists are happy with the way Obama has handled the aftermath of the Islamist terror attack at the Charlie Hedbo offices in Paris.

The absence of President Barack Obama or any top members of his administration from a huge march in Paris on Sunday to honor victims of Islamist militant attacks raised eyebrows among some in the U.S. media.

French President Francois Hollande and some 44 foreign dignitaries, including leaders from Germany, Italy, Britain, Turkey, Israel and the Palestinian territories, headed more than a million people in what commentators said was the largest crowd in Paris since its liberation from Nazi Germany in 1944.

...The United States was represented at Sunday's march by its ambassador to France, Jane Hartley. But commentators on some U.S. media outlets questioned why Obama did not attend or send a top administration official such as Vice President Joe Biden or Secretary of State John Kerry.

...The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

It wasn't just U.S. media outlets pointing out Obama's snub.

But he wasn't standing in Paris as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas put aside their differences and linked arms.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergei Lavrov made the same unifying gesture in the march down the Place de la Concorde in defiance of the Islamist terror attacks that rocked the city last week.

According to an administration official, President Obama spent part of his Sunday afternoon watching a National Football League game on television. Both games were broadcast hours after the march.

At the very least, Joe Biden should have been there to join with the WORLD and participate in this historic march.

Maybe today Michelle will post something on Twitter, to convey how seriously the Obama administration takes the Islamist terror attacks in Paris.

The lightning-quick strikes ended two tense, hours-long standoffs, one at a printing plant north of the city and the other at a kosher supermarket on Paris' east side. A hostage held by the brothers, who killed 12 in a commando-style attack at the offices of Charlie Hebdo, was reportedly freed, and early reports said the police raid in Paris was "successful." The fast-moving developments, signaled by explosions and gunfire at a printing plant in Dammartin-en-Goele, followed by similar sounds at Hypercacher (Hyper Kosher), a Jewish supermarket in eastern Paris, brought to a climax a three-day terror ordeal and manhunt involving nearly 90,000 police and military personnel.

Cherif and Said Kouachi, the radicalized French-born slackers whose attack on Charlie Hebdo left two police officers among the dozen dead, were both killed in the first raid. Police had identified him and his longtime girlfriend, Hayat Boumeddiene, as suspects, but her whereabouts were not immediately known.

Coulibaly, 33, and Cherif Kouachi were committed followers of convicted terror kingpin Djamel Beghal, according to Le Monde.

It's a victory every time the free world gets rid of Islamist terrorists.

With Cherif and Said Kouachi dead, free people are safer.

But--

There is an army of other Islamists intending to do what Cherif and Said Kouachi did.

Time to start looking at violence done in the name of Allah for what it is - WAR.

Still, it is disturbing to witness a total break from reality. You would think that after something as horrific and barbaric as the terrorist attack in Paris by Islamists, after the gunmen killed 12 people in cold blood, you'd think that even Leftists would grasp the nature of that evil.

Police are hunting three French nationals, including two brothers from the Paris region, after suspected Islamist gunmen killed 12 people at a satirical magazine on Wednesday, a police official and government source said.

The hooded attackers stormed the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo, a weekly known for lampooning Islam and other religions, in the most deadly militant attack on French soil in decades.

...During the attack, one of the assailants was captured on video outside the building shouting "Allahu Akbar!" (God is Greatest) as shots rang out. Another walked over to a police officer lying wounded on the street and shot him point-blank with an assault rifle, before the two calmly climbed into a black car and drove off.

In that bizarre parallel universe known as MSNBC, the terror attack by three Islamists is equated with Jerry Falwell suing Hustler.

Yes, gunning down 12 people and a court case are considered comparable acts of religious fundamentalism.

Moreover, we need to understand why the Islamists commit terror attacks.

Rick MacArthur of Harper's magazine adds to the inanity by blaming the U.S. troop presence in the Middle East.

MacArthur cites the "huge American troop presence in the Middle East, and an insertion of American power in the Middle East that never existed before....there is a sense of grievance in the Muslim world today that didn't exist twenty years ago – before the United States sent troops to Saudi Arabia."

Said Kourachi, 34, his brother Cherif, 32, and Hamyd Mourad, 18, hit the offices of a French satirical magazine. They killed journalists and cartoonists and police officers.

These killers misdirected their "sense of grievance" if U.S. presence in the Middle East is to blame.

Both Bates and MacArthur are nuts.

They don't understand the nature of the enemy. I don't think they want to understand. They appear incapable of handling the truth.

Islamist Terror Attack in Paris

Gun attack on French magazine kills 12

Gunmen have shot dead 12 people at the Paris office of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in an apparent militant Islamist attack.

Four of the magazine's well-known cartoonists, including its editor, were among those killed, as well as two police officers.

A major police operation is under way to find three gunmen who fled by car.

President Francois Hollande said there was no doubt it had been a terrorist attack "of exceptional barbarity".

It is believed to be the deadliest attack in France since 1961, when right-wingers who wanted to keep Algeria French bombed a train, killing 28 people.

The masked attackers opened fire with assault rifles in the office and exchanged shots with police in the street outside before escaping by car. They later abandoned the car in Rue de Meaux, northern Paris, where they hijacked a second car.

Witnesses said they heard the gunmen shouting "We have avenged the Prophet Muhammad" and "God is Great" in Arabic ("Allahu Akbar").

Of course.
