Armed with AR-15 and AK-47 semi-automatic weapons, members of an impromptu “Operation Hero Guard” stationed themselves outside a military recruiting center in downtown Cleburne to protect those who work inside.

The men said their volunteer effort is tied to the recent killing of five servicemen in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Two of the five men in Cleburne began standing guard Monday at the U.S. Armed Forces Recruiting Station on Nolan River Road and said they will stay as long as necessary.

Terry Jackson, an Army veteran with 15 years of service, said he was stunned to hear of Thursday’s shooting rampage at a military recruiting center in Chattanooga and a nearby Navy Reserve center.

“That's unacceptable,” Jackson said, recalling his first thought. “It was unacceptable for our soldiers, sailors, our men and women of the military to go over and serve and go into combat, and then to come back here to the homeland and be gunned down on their home duty stations. They were going to work for their families and not coming home.”

...President Barack Obama, speaking Tuesday to the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Pittsburgh, said the U.S. is doing everything in its power to protect American military members.

That, of course, is not true.

Leaving them defenseless by unarming them is not protection, Obama.

Republican Gov. Scott Walker issued an executive order Tuesday authorizing Wisconsin National Guard personnel to carry firearms while on duty in the wake of an attack on a pair of military facilities in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The governor's order directed Maj. Gen. Don Dunbar, who oversees the Wisconsin National Guard, to arm guard personnel "as reasonably necessary." Walker also said in a news release that he ordered Dunbar to review the long-term security plans for all of the guard's facilities.

"Safety must be our top priority, especially in light of the horrific attack in Chattanooga," Walker said in the release.

Dunbar immediately ordered the posting of armed guardsmen at the guard's four storefront recruiting stations in Eau Claire, La Crosse, Madison and Milwaukee, said Maj. Paul Rickert, the guard's spokesman. Visitors to those locations should be prepared to have their bags searched, Rickert said. The guard began a security review Monday evening after learning the order was about to come down, he added.

The four Marines killed by Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez have been identified.

Abdulazeez has been described as an "all-American boy."

"All-American boys" aren't radical Islamic terrorists.

Abdulazeez is dead.

Inexcusably, before he was killed, he took the lives of four Marines.

The Marines were defenseless, unarmed.

That policy has to change.

He played whiffle ball in a suburban neighborhood of swim meets and gently sloping lawns. He was a young man who was polite, who sometimes drove too fast, who was arrested on a drunken-driving charge. He was a hardened mixed-martial arts fighter who kept a blog where he mused about submitting to Allah.

And on Thursday, the authorities say that Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, 24, killed four Marines and wounded at least three other people. He himself died in what the United States attorney here called a potential act of “domestic terrorism.”

According to a federal official, Mr. Abdulazeez was a Kuwaiti-born Jordanian who became a naturalized United States citizen. According to The Chattanooga Times Free Press, he graduated from Red Bank High School, whose quotation on his graduation yearbook page was: “My name causes national security alerts. What does yours do?”

His neighbors here in Hixson, the suburb of Chattanooga where he grew up, said that he seemed to have been an all-American boy, handsome and polite, normally in a T-shirt and jeans.

...A résumé that Mr. Abdulazeez posted on the Internet shows that he received an engineering degree from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga in 2012 and interned with the Tennessee Valley Authority, learning to manage electrical power systems.

...Mr. Abdulazeez maintained a blog where he posted about Islam, according to the SITE Intelligence Group, which tracks international terrorist groups. A July 13 post stated that “life is short and bitter” and that Muslims should not let “the opportunity to submit to Allah ... pass you by.”

Photographs posted on family Facebook pages show the once-clean-cut student recently grew a beard. A Hamilton County jail booking report posted on Chattanoogan.com shows that he was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence, a first offense.

In the last two or three months, Mr. Abdulazeez had begun showing up rather regularly at Friday Prayer at the Islamic Society of Greater Chattanooga, a large mosque and cultural center, said Dr. Azhar S. Sheikh, a founding member of the center’s board.

Dr. Sheikh said that he showed no signs of extremism.

Well. He certainly showed signs of extremism on Thursday.

The Leftists don't know what to do with Abdulazeez. They can't blame the Tea Party. Dare they admit the religion of peace can foster radicals? This is messy.

I fear that we're becoming desensitized to these killings.

"Oh, four Marines were killed by a radicalized Islamic nut. Very sad. Let's move on. Hey, did Caitlyn Jenner say anything interesting today? So glad the war on the Confederate flag is being won."

That's an unacceptable reaction.

We have to allow Marines to be armed. Clearly, they're like sitting ducks.

We can't be afraid to identify our enemies.

I guess giving Iran nukes wasn't enough to convince Abdulazeez to like America.

Neighbors say Abdulazeez seemed like an all-American boy.

"Seemed" is the operative word.

Abdulazeez was a terrorist and he carried out an attack on our military.

An "all-American boy" does NOT target our military and kill four Marines.
