Early Voting Bill Passes, Tom Barrett Outraged

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett is outraged again.

This time, he's outraged about the bill the State Senate passed to grant equal access for early voting to all citizens in Wisconsin.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett blasted legislation approved by the state Senate Wednesday to eliminate early voting on weekends, calling in "mean-spirited," and an attempt to disenfranchise voters in heavily Democratic cities.

"This is all about suppressing the vote in Milwaukee and Madison," Barrett said at a news conference Wednesday, just hours after the Senate passed the measure on a one-vote margin. "This is about suppressing the vote for people of color, people with disabilities and for low-income people."

...Republican supporters said the measure promotes uniformity in the election process. Barrett called that "a smoke screen."

...At the Barrett news conference, [Common Council President Michael] Murphy warned Gov. Scott Walker that if he is considering running for president in 2016, the nation would be watching his actions on voter rights. And Alderman Willie Wade, who has the city's largest percentage of African-American voters, suggested Republicans embrace policies that attract those voters instead of trying to disenfranchise them.

"If the governor is going to run on a platform that disenfranchises African-American voters, good luck getting support from the African-American and Latino communities," Murphy said. "It ain't gonna happen."

OK, this crap from Barrett and his pals outrages me.

Scott Walker is not disenfranchising African-American and Latino voters.

This isn't about voter suppression, Mr. Mayor. It's about putting an end to the abuse of early voting in targeted areas like Milwaukee and Madison.

How can you claim SUPPRESSION when everyone in the state now has an equal opportunity to vote?

It's ridiculous.

And it's absolutely awful that DEMOCRATS like Barrett are charging Republicans and supporters of the bill with racism. That's disgusting. It's such a sleazy attack.

I haven't heard any DEMOCRAT present a convincing argument as to why it would be acceptable for people living in urban areas to have preferential treatment in terms of times to access early voting.

There are low-income people, people of color, and people with disabilities across Wisconsin. They don't only live and vote in Milwaukee and Madison. What about them, outraged Mr. Mayor?

There must be uniform rules for elections, no preferential treatment for certain communities.

Why should people living in Milwaukee and Madison have extended access to early voting when others don't have the same access?

Polls aren't open longer on Election Day in Milwaukee and Madison. Barrett should be demanding that, if he's to be consistent. Talk about "smoke screens."

Early voting with evening and weekend hours is fine with me, as long as those hours are the same for everyone in Wisconsin.

The inequity of the past policies needed to be addressed.

The bill is a very good thing, justice for all.

Tim Carpenter Claims Misquoted by JS

This is a bizarre article from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - "Carpenter defends self for comments that outraged Republicans."

So, Carpenter says he was misquoted when he said that Mary Lazich "hates Milwaukee, she hates the poll workers, she hates that blacks and Latinos are coming out..."

The Journal Sentinel seems to agree that it misquoted Carpenter.

At the time, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel incorrectly quoted part of Carpenter's attack, reporting that he said that Lazich "hates the blacks and Latinos who are coming out."

...In an email to the Journal Sentinel, Carpenter said that "the Journal Sentinel misquote completely changes the meaning of my comments."

In brief statements to a reporter at the Capitol, Carpenter said he wanted an apology from both the newspaper and Farrow and then cut short the conversation by walking away.

"You've really put me in a bad light," he said.

Carpenter claims the Journal Sentinel quoted him incorrectly.

WHAT'S THE CORRECT STATEMENT?

Why would the Journal Sentinel state that it "incorrectly quoted part of Carpenter's attack" without clarifying what Carpenter actually said?

It's terrible reporting. Terrible.

The Journal Sentinel must know or why issue the admission that Carpenter was incorrectly quoted?

Tim Carpenter: Mary Lazich Hates Blacks and Latinos

The State Senate debate on the bill to standardize early voting hours for all Wisconsin citizens got terribly personal and truly ugly.

From FOX6 News:

The measure would require county clerks to limit early voting to between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. It would end weekend early voting hours.

The bill would make early voting hours uniform across the state.

“What we’re trying to do is bring some consistency to voting hours throughout the state. I’ve heard from a number of constituents that watch (FOX6) and other Milwaukee news outlets that it just seemed to be unfair when you see a line of people in Milwaukee ready to vote on a Saturday and yet somebody in rural Wisconsin or Dodge or Washington County is unable to go to the town hall that they may vote in and cast a ballot,” Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said.

Democrats say the bill is baffling — and say it targets urban areas.

“The uniformity is inconsistent with the need to remember that each municipality needs to be in control of its own. On top of the Capitol, we have Lady Forward. There’s no question that this really reeks of Jim Crow and backwards,” Sen. Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee) said.

...Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) is demanding an apology from Sen. Tim Carpenter (D-Milwaukee) — not for something he said about her, but for accusations he made against a lawmaker from New Berlin.

Sen. Carpenter, during debate on Tuesday, told Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin) she must hate blacks and Latinos — and fireworks ensued.

This is terrible.

"Jim Crow"?

Supporting a bill to give citizens across the state equal access to early voting means one "must hate blacks and Latinos"?

That's sick, even for the shameless Democrats.

Of course, Chris Larson and his Democrat colleagues want to give their voting blocks preferential treatment. Of course, they don't want all Wisconsin voters to be treated equally and offered equal opportunity to vote. Still, I hoped conscience and integrity would prevail.

Alas, I gave the Democrats too much credit.

Why did the Democrats resort to engaging in such despicable behavior and making such foul accusations?

Because they can't argue against the merits of the bill.

Bottom line: All Wisconsin citizens should have an equal opportunity to cast an early ballot. One should not be penalized for living in a smaller community or a rural area. That's unjust.

Wisconsin Senate Democrats really disgraced themselves on Tuesday.

Wisconsin Early Voting Hours Should Be Uniform

This legislation is long overdue in Wisconsin.

If you don't live in Milwaukee or Madison, your opportunity to vote early is dramatically reduced.

That's wrong.

Early voting hours should be standard throughout the state. This really is a no-brainer. Of course, voting hours should be uniform.

People living in smaller communities and rural areas should not be penalized when it comes to voting opportunities. At present, they are.

Naturally, the Leftists are whining that Republicans are trying to disenfranchise minorities.

What a crock!

Read how the issue is presented in the Washington Post: "Wisconsin moves closer to cuts in early voting hours."

The Wisconsin state Senate on Tuesday will take up a measure to cut early voting hours during weekend days, a move Democrats say will make it harder for urban voters to cast ballots.

The bill would open early voting sites at county clerks’ offices on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Clerks’ offices would be prohibited from remaining open later at night or on weekends, when party activists have been most successful at driving voters to the polls.

Republican backers of the proposed legislation say standardizing early voting hours statewide would give equal access to voters in both urban areas and in more sparsely populated rural counties, where clerks sometimes don’t have the resources to keep their offices open late.

The headline stresses that "urban voters" will see a cut in their early voting hours.

Instead, the headline should read, "Wisconsin moves closer to equalizing early voting hours for all."

That's what is really happening.

Voters must have equal access when it comes to casting ballots. At present. there is not equal access. That's unacceptable.

“It is important that we do something toward establishing uniformity for early voting around the state,” state Sen. Glenn Grothman (R), the bill’s lead sponsor, told the MacIver News Service, a conservative-leaning think tank.

Democrats, though, say the limited hours mean voters who work during the week would be disenfranchised.

“I am not comfortable with a standard that treats a community that has 50 people or 500 people the same as Milwaukee that has more than half a million people,” state Sen. Lena Taylor (D) told MacIver.

What?

We should all be treated equally, Lena.

People in small communities and rural areas are being disenfranchised. It's so clear. They work during the week, too. But, they don't have extended hours to vote.

That's flat-out unjust.

This legislation is not an effort to discourage voting. It's an effort to grant everyone equal access.

That's what this is about.

I don't care if early voting hours are extended or cut, but they must be the same for all voters in the state.
