Jimmy Lai has embraced his destiny. Last Wednesday the founder of one of Hong Kong’s most popular newspapers, Apple Daily, was arrested on ginned-up fraud charges. On Thursday he was clapped into jail as a national security risk. Thus did a man who started the week a Hong Kong billionaire end it a Chinese dissident.

Mr. Lai’s jailing has provoked condemnation from figures as diverse as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former Soviet refusenik Natan Sharansky and New York Rep. Eliot Engel. They have been joined by journalists, activists and politicians such as the Labour Party’s Sarah Champion and other members of Parliament who on Monday raised Mr. Lai’s plight in Britain’s House of Commons.

But there is one place where China’s bullying elicits only silence: the Vatican. Which is strange, because Jimmy Lai is not only Hong Kong’s most well-known champion of democracy; he is also its most prominent Catholic layman. At a moment when he and his family most need their shepherd, Pope Francis is MIA.

The pope's silence on this is extremely disturbing.

Let's see these, these amazing things that America built. Are we gonna be the generation where we stop building? Where we've got rundown roads and bridges that are deemed obsolete? That's not who America is.

So Congress will have a chance to see if they want to put Americans back to work doin' the work that America needs done.

I think the world still says, let's travel to America.

I don't see masses of people clamoring to get into communist China to see their damn railroads and airports.

We have freedom. In America, there isn't a one-child policy.

Do you think for one minute that China would tolerate the insanity of the Occupy Wall Street loons?

No Black Market Organs for You

If you are on a waiting list for an organ transplant, don't bother going to the Philippines to get what you need.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) -- Foreigners will be permanently banned from receiving kidneys for transplant in the Philippines to prevent the country from becoming a major Asian center in a thriving black market, health officials announced Tuesday.
Extensive kidney trading involving impoverished Filipinos and prisoners—who sell their organs for paltry sums to syndicates catering mostly to foreign clients—has been reported by the local media in recent years. A temporary ban on kidney transplants involving foreigners was recently imposed.

China and Pakistan, among the world's biggest sources of kidneys, have taken steps to outlaw the sale of human organs, and desperate foreigners may be prompted to increasingly turn to the Philippines for kidneys, Health Secretary Francisco Duque said.

"The poor always end up as the ones being abused," he said, adding kidney transplants for foreigners have risen in recent years. "The sale of one's body parts is condemnable and ethically improper. We have to stop it."

The sale of organs is illegal in the Philippines. The ban—intended to protect poor Filipinos from exploitation—will prohibit foreigners from getting donated kidneys unless they can prove a donor is related to them by blood, Duque said.

He said the ban was endorsed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and will take effect in about three weeks. Kidney donations among Filipinos will continue but will be strictly monitored by a new regulatory body, he said.

Social Welfare Secretary Esperanza Cabral said at least 500 kidney transplants involving foreign patients were conducted last year in the Philippines.

...Local TV networks have shown footage of Manila slums where virtually all men bore kidney surgery scars after selling their kidneys for about $4,760 each.

This is a dirty, but not so secret, practice in Asia.

After years of denial, the Chinese government finally admitted that it engaged in human organ harvesting. In China, prisoners, including political prisoners, were executed for their organs.

China has acknowledged that foreigners who can pay more than native Chinese have been given preference for organ transplants and that "donors" for the operation have often been executed prisoners.

WND reported in 2004 charges by the banned Falun Gong group – backed up by Chinese doctors and human rights experts – that the communist government was torturing prisoners, executing them and trafficking in their body parts.

This week, at a summit for transplant doctors held in Guangzhou, the once-denied practice was confirmed by government officials.

"Apart from a small portion of traffic victims, most of the organs from cadavers are from executed prisoners," said Vice Health Minister Huang Jiefu, according to English-language China Daily newspaper. "The current organ donation shortfall can't meet demand."

A ministry spokesman also said that "wealthier people, including foreign patients" were able to move to the top of waiting lists ahead of others waiting for organs.

Whether people are selling their organs or the government is taking prisoners and executing them to harvest their organs for transplant, it's a sick, sick practice.

Talk about torture! Talk about cruel and unusual punishment!

China's Human Rights Record a Surprise?

As the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing approach, concern over China's human rights violations is snowballing.

Where have these outraged people been? What planet have they been living on? Have they been preoccupied with other matters for the past DECADES?

Zheng Enchong is a self-taught lawyer and a dogged human rights activist. In many countries, he would be considered a gadfly. But in China during this Olympic year, he is treated like a threat to national security.

One police surveillance camera tapes whoever enters or leaves his Shanghai apartment. Another monitors whoever presses the elevator button. A third records people in the building's elevator.

Lest the cameras prove unreliable, plainclothes police officers lounge in one corner of Zheng's landing through the day, smoking, sipping tea and playing cards.

Often, Zheng said, they prevent him from leaving his building. When he tried in February to go out to buy dumplings, the guards beat him up. In recent months, he said, they have been allowing him to attend church most Sunday mornings. But sometimes not. He never knows exactly why.

"That's the way things are for me," the round-faced lawyer said in an interview, smiling haplessly as if embarrassed by his fate. "It's been going on for the last two years."

As Beijing prepares to host the 2008 Olympic Games in August, the grinding controls imposed by the Chinese government on Zheng and other civil rights activists over the last decade are coming under growing scrutiny abroad.

China's security forces have extensive experience and little legal restriction in suppressing dissent. But domestic challenges to Communist Party rule are playing out today within a rising international debate over what place China's human rights record should have in the Olympics.

The Chinese government insists that the Games should have nothing to do with politics. Foreign activists, however, argue that the desire to celebrate athletic achievement should not be a reason for the world to ignore the dark side of Chinese policies.

President Bush, aligning with China's rulers, disagrees. He plans to attend the opening extravaganza Aug. 8. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has taken a similar position.

But since rioting erupted in the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, on March 14, international concern has swelled, in particular over the fate of Tibetans. President Nicolas Sarkozy of France responded by saying a boycott of the Olympics opening ceremony is worth considering. The German chancellor, Angela Merkel, announced she is staying away. As part of her presidential campaign, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) suggested Monday that Bush should follow suit, citing China's conduct regarding Tibet and the Sudanese region of Darfur.

Little mentioned in the debate are the daily challenges -- from monitoring to arrest -- risked by Zheng and any of China's 1.3 billion residents if they challenge the party line.

Just months before the Olympics, all of a sudden, world leaders are showing great concern about human rights in China.

It's as if the West hasn't been paying attention.

Google had no problem getting into bed with China and being the government's accomplice in heavy-handed censorship. That deal was two years ago. Yahoo and Microsoft also chose to compromise principles for profit.

There certainly weren't widespread calls to boycott Google or Yahoo or Microsoft. Did Sarkozy, Merkl, or Hillary Clinton refuse to use their products or services because they're enablers of China's censorship?

Back in April 2006, when Chinese President Hu Jintao visited the U.S., he was met with some protests.

While visiting the state of Washington, supporters of the Falun Gong blasted protests about China's human rights violations from sound trucks into Hu's hotel. The protesters also gathered at Microsoft's headquarters.

Other protesters congregated outside the White House gates with signs and banners noting the issues of China's various atrocities, and its policies on Tibet and Taiwan.

Those protests were minor and easily managed by the Chinese thought police. However, one protester did manage a high profile disruption of Hu's carefully orchestrated visit.

Dr. Wang Wenyi interrupted a ceremony on the White House South Lawn when she screamed about China's persecution of Falun Gong practitioners.

Wang, a physician and a Falun Gong practitioner, said that it was the atrocities being committed by the Chinese government, particularly live organ harvesting, that prompted her protest.

According to Wang, there are concentration camps in China. The communist government and their operatives have incarcerated at least 200,000 people. They've committed no crimes. They are innocent; yet according to Dr. Wang, no one comes out of the labor camps alive.

She notes that between 2001 and 2003, thousands of Falun Gong practitioners have been victimized.

On the Internet organs are advertised as being available within two weeks. Anyone even vaguely familiar with people waiting for transplants knows that it can take years to find a suitable match. It's impossible to guarantee an organ so quickly, unless there is an organ farm available.

These innocent people are held in facilities and their blood types and tissue types are documented and kept in a database. When someone comes looking to buy a kidney or a heart, the Chinese communists simply kill an individual to get that person's organs. They commit murder and they sell the parts of that human being. Obviously, these killers are drawing from a very large pool to be able to provide suitable matches.

In addition to this organ harvesting, men and women are routinely executed for the practice of Falun Gong.

At the time, Wang's protest received relatively little attention from the mainstream press.

Months after her protest, in November 2006, WorldNetDaily reported that Wang Wenyi was right.

Following years of denial, China has acknowledged that foreigners who can pay more than native Chinese have been given preference for organ transplants and that "donors" for the operation have often been executed prisoners.

Where was the international outrage over this barbarism?

Did those calling for a boycott of the opening ceremonies of the Olympics complain about the Chinese government's execution of thousands and the extraction of their organs for transplants?

Why did it take those leaders planning to sit out the opening ceremonies in Beijing so long to come to the conclusion that there are serious human rights violations in China?

Why are China's sins being put in the spotlight now?

Does it really come as a surprise to anyone that the host country of the 2008 Olympics doesn't have a great record on human rights?

A gesture like boycotting the Olympic opening ceremonies is way too little way too late.

Nobody expected China to democratize overnight, and, given the country’s mighty economic power, nobody really wants to antagonize Beijing. But a nation that applies to host the Olympic Games also must demonstrate that it is worthy of the honor. China has only itself to blame for messing up its coming-out party.

No.

The blame rests on the Olympic Committee for bestowing China with the honor of hosting the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

China clearly demonstrated that it was not worthy of that honor. The decision was announced on July 31, 2001.

I guess the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 were forgotten. If not forgotten, the Chinese government's response was forgiven.

The utopia of socialized medicine is a myth.

Case in point:

A former surfing champion has flown to the Philippines to buy a new kidney after waiting for a transplant in Britain for more than four years.

Mark Schofield has saved £40,000 for the life-saving operation in the hope of finding a poor filipino to sell him an organ.

The 43-year-old said he had no choice but to become a 'transplant tourist' after being let down by the donor service in Britain.

Britian's health care system has let Schofield down.

How can that be?

Universal health care is the way to go. At least that's what we keep hearing from the Dems and fringe Leftists like Sicko Michael Moore.

He added: 'I'm not prepared to lie down and play dead. I've got to take a gamble – I can't just sit here and do nothing.

'I know the moral argument about buying and selling organs but I also know I have two young children who I want to see grow up.' mr Schofield was struck down by kidney disease 20 years ago, when he was a professional surfer on the world circuit.

His mother, Jean, donated one of her kidneys so he could start a family and carry on with his life.

But now the businessman, from Porthcawl, South Wales, needs another transplant.

Because he has a rare blood type, the donor service has failed to find him a match after four-and-a-half years.

There are 6,500 people on the waiting list for a kidney transplant in Britain but just 1,800 operations were carried out last year.

To be fair, people lingering on waiting lists for organs isn't just a problem in countries with socialized medicine.

The demand for transplant organs is far greater than available organs.

But let's not pretend that universal health care is a panacea. Let's not be fooled by the promises from the Dem presidential candidates and their visions of government-run health care.

That's issue one in this story.

Issue two: The morality of going to a third world country to find a poor person willing to sell an organ.

A person is clearly in a desperate situation when one is willing to sell one's body parts.

It could be worse.

Getting compensated for giving up an organ is far better than what has gone on in China.

Since the law prior to the new rules already said donations were supposed to be with consent, there is some question about the new regulations' effectiveness and whether they will be ignored as well. They only apply to ministry of health hospitals, the London Telegraph reported, and most transplant operations on foreigners are done at military hospitals run by the People's Liberation Army.

...Mabel Wu, 69, of Northridge, Calif., paid $40,000 for her new kidney in July. The family was told only that the donor was a 30-year-old male.

"I am very happy with this transplant," Wu told the Times. "I got a good kidney."

It's true.

The Communist Chinese HAVE been harvesting human organs and selling them at bargain prices.

Chinese prisoners, including political prisoners, are executed and their organs are used in transplants.

The Chinese don't deny this anymore. They admit to the practice.

Where's the outcry from so-called human rights organizations?

John Batchelor had a fascinating guest on his radio program tonight -- Dr. Wang Wenyi.

While introducing her, Batchelor called Wang a "21st century hero." He deemed her heroic because she "spoke the truth to a tyrant," the unelected, mass-murdering Hu Jintao.

Wang, a physician and a Falun Gong practitioner, said that it was the atrocities being committed by the Chinese government, particularly live organ harvesting, that prompted her protest last week at the White House lawn.

A caller to Batchelor's show inquired about how Wang felt before she began her protest at the White House.

She wasn't afraid. She said she felt "really calm" before yelling at Hu.

It was incredibly courageous for this one woman to stand up to Hu, a man backed by an enormous army with nuclear weapons. She had the nerve to speak out against the crimes of the Chinese communist party in an extremely high profile setting.

As many as 100,000,000 people have joined the Falun Gong since 1999. Dr. Wang believes that it's these huge numbers that frighten the Chinese communist party.

They are so afraid that they've taken to executing the Falun Gong practitioners; and rather than just kill them, they are making a profit from their organs as an added bonus.

Batchelor pointed out that when Wang stood up to Hu and shouted for the world to hear, the words of this one woman were able to frighten the 60,000,000 men of the Chinese communist party.

He had her address the murderers, knowing that they'd be monitoring the Internet. She simply asked them to stop and to behave like human beings.

The details of live organ harvesting are so horrific that they are difficult to believe.

How could human beings do this to other human beings?

It's incomprehensible.

Referring to the atrocities in China as being akin to the horrors of the Holocaust, Batchelor summed up the persecution of the Falun Gong practitioners, "Remember never again? Yes, again."

Coincidentally, tomorrow, on April 25, Jews and others around the world will pause to observe Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day.

In the Yale Daily News, Daniel Hoffman writes:

Yom HaShoah is a sad day not only for those people who were persecuted, but also for the world that allowed such things to happen. Perhaps the best-known phrase connected with the Holocaust is "Never Again," and it is an important lesson. But perhaps in today's world, we need to be ever more vigilant to that message. It is imperative for all to remember what happened, and there is an important lesson that we must heed in order to ensure that such things never happen on this planet again, be it in Europe, the Sudan or anywhere else in the world.

Yom HaShoah reminds us, less than a week after Passover, that freedom is fleeting. Any freedom that we may feel can easily be crushed by the right opponent. We in the United States tend to get complacent with the freedoms that we have here since they have held up for so long. But we must remain forever vigilant of what might happen to those freedoms and protect them wherever they might be threatened. If we do not remember this important lesson from history, we risk losing those same freedoms ourselves. We must never lose sight of what makes this country so great even in trying to defend her.

...Shanghai-based Dragon Television carried Hu's White House appearance live but cut away when the protester appeared. So did Phoenix Satellite Television, a Chinese-language broadcaster in Hong Kong with close ties to the Beijing government. The main state channel, China Central Television, didn't carry the event live.

Broadcasts in China by CNN and the British Broadcasting Corp.'s BBC World were blacked out repeatedly Friday by censors, apparently to prevent Chinese viewers from seeing the protester.

Despite such measures, at least some Chinese were clearly aware of Thursday's missteps.

On washeng.net, a Chinese-language Web site hosted overseas, postings accused the White House of intentionally allowing in the protester.

"This was absolutely planned and directed by America. Given America's anxiety over the war on terror, that person should have been shot otherwise," said an unsigned comment.

"The only explanation," it said, "is that this happened with the knowledge of the Secret Service."

Said another: "It's a tragic and insulting image for international relations."

That's the same stuff being said by some loons on the American Left, always ready with a wacko conspiracy theory.

Today, Dana Milbank focuses on the "indignities" suffered by Hu Jintao.

He writes:

If only the White House hadn't given press credentials to a Falun Gong activist who five years ago heckled Hu's predecessor, Jiang Zemin, in Malta. Sure enough, 90 seconds into Hu's speech on the South Lawn, the woman started shrieking, "President Hu, your days are numbered!" and "President Bush, stop him from killing!"

Bush and Hu looked up, stunned. It took so long to silence her -- a full three minutes -- that Bush aides began to wonder if the Secret Service's strategy was to let her scream herself hoarse. The rattled Chinese president haltingly attempted to continue his speech and television coverage went to split screen.

"You're okay," Bush gently reassured Hu.

But he wasn't okay, not really. The protocol-obsessed Chinese leader suffered a day full of indignities -- some intentional, others just careless. The visit began with a slight when the official announcer said the band would play the "national anthem of the Republic of China" -- the official name of Taiwan. It continued when Vice President Cheney donned sunglasses for the ceremony, and again when Hu, attempting to leave the stage via the wrong staircase, was yanked back by his jacket. Hu looked down at his sleeve to see the president of the United States tugging at it as if redirecting an errant child.

Then there were the intentional slights. China wanted a formal state visit such as Jiang got, but the administration refused, calling it instead an "official" visit. Bush acquiesced to the 21-gun salute but insisted on a luncheon instead of a formal dinner, in the East Room instead of the State Dining Room. Even the visiting country's flags were missing from the lampposts near the White House.

But as protocol breaches go, it's hard to top the heckling of a foreign leader at the White House. Explaining the incident -- the first disruption at the executive mansion in recent memory -- White House and Secret Service officials said she was "a legitimate journalist" and that there was nothing suspicious in her background. In other words: Who knew?

Hu did. The Chinese had warned the White House to be careful about who was admitted to the ceremony. To no avail: They granted a one-day pass to Wang Wenyi of the Falun Gong publication Epoch Times. A quick Nexis search shows that in 2001, she slipped through a security cordon in Malta protecting Jiang (she had been denied media credentials) and got into an argument with him. The 47-year-old pathologist is expected to be charged today with attempting to harass a foreign official.

WAAAAAAH!

Oh, the indignities!

The people of China suffer human rights abuses like torture, imprisonment, organ-harvesting, and censorship; but let's all feel sorry for the "indignities" that Hu suffered in Washington at the hands of Bush.

I think it's fair to say that Milbank is a Hu sympathizer.


Speaking of "indignity," Milbank doesn't seem to know it when he sees it.
Sometimes the Communist Chinese and liberals are nearly indistinguishable.
Perhaps these Americans need to spend some time in China, a long time.

According to the Drudge Report, the Hu Heckler remains in custody. She has been charged with disorderly conduct and intimidating a foreign official.

Reuters reports:

"President Hu, your days are numbered. President Bush, make him stop persecuting Falun Gong," the woman yelled. US officials later identified her as Wang Wenyi, 47, a reporter with The Epoch Times, an English-language publication strongly supportive of the meditation movement that is banned in China.

The Secret Service was interviewing the woman and a source said she would be charged with disorderly conduct.

Outside the White House, hundreds of yellow-clad Falun Gong disciples, Taiwanese nationalists, and Tibetan youth group members demonstrated against Hu and his government.

Why is it that officials have dragged their feet on charging Cynthia McKinney with assaulting a Capitol Hill police officer, but it appears that Wenyi Wang will be quickly slapped with charges?

Is justice blind?

Are people in power above the law?

In case you weren't aware, America and China are different.

We have a Constitution with a Bill of Rights. Our right to dissent is the Law of the Land.

Chinese President Hu Jintao touted deepening U.S.-China ties as he prepared to tour a major U.S. exporter on Wednesday before a White House summit expected to touch on trade frictions and Iran's nuclear program.

...Hu dined Tuesday night with about 100 U.S. political and corporate leaders at the home of Bill Gates, whose Microsoft Corp. has been a major victim of Chinese software piracy. In a meeting earlier with Gates, Hu reiterated that China would move against software pirates.

...Attendees at Tuesday's dinner, hosted by Washington state Gov. Chris Gregoire at Gates' $100 million lakeside mansion, included executives from Boeing Co., a leading exporter, which Hu will visit Wednesday.

Not everything has gone smoothly for Hu. He has been met by some protesters during his U.S. visit.

In the state of Washington on Tuesday, supporters of the Falun Gong blasted protests about China's human rights violations from sound trucks into Hu's hotel. The protesters also gathered at Microsoft's headquarters.

Other protesters congregated outside the White House gates with signs and banners noting the issues of China's various atrocities, and its policies on Tibet and Taiwan.

These protests were minor and easily managed by the Chinese thought police. This morning, however, one woman managed to stage a high profile protest.

After all of the carefully orchestrated and lavish treatment poured on Hu the past couple of days, the Chinese president got a taste of freedom.

President Hu Jintao of China started his first visit to Washington as his country's top leader today, greeted warmly with band music and handshakes by President Bush on the White House lawn. But the formality of the ceremony was quickly shattered when an emotional heckler shouted at him from a position stationed among journalists covering the event.

Shortly after Mr. Hu, with President Bush at his side, stepped up to the podium and expressed his happiness to visit the United States "in the lovely season of spring," shrill shouts from a protester, who appeared to be Asian, rang out from across the lawn during the live television broadcast.


She began shouting in Chinese, but broke into English at moments, yelling "Stop the torture and killings!" and shouting the name of the Falun Gong, a religious and exercise sect that is outlawed in China. "Falun Dafa is good," she yelled.

Mr. Hu looked at first confused and then hesitated before continuing to speak.

"You're okay," Mr. Bush said to him in a low voice, prodding him on.

For about a minute, the shrill protests punctuated both Mr. Hu's remarks and the gaps in which he fell silent when they were being translated into English. A photographer standing next to the woman tried briefly to silence her.

Eventually, security officials made their way to the top of the camera stand and led her away as some photographers turned their cameras from the two leaders and pointed them at the protester.

...The incident with the protester raised questions about the adequacy of security measures for journalists covering visits of foreign leaders to the White House. It was not clear how the woman gained access to the pool. She positioned herself in the one place where the Secret Service would have the hardest time reaching her: On the top level of a grandstand set up for television cameras, blocked by equipment and ladders on all sides.

Naturally, the Times bashes the Secret Service and the White House for providing inadequate security at the event.

Rather than highlight what the woman was shouting about, the Times prefers to turn the incident into a screw-up on the part of the Bush Administration.

What was the woman doing with the press pool?

There are a few possibilities.

She may be a member of the press and decided to stage her protest. She may have been successful at obtaining press credentials fraudulently. She may have been aided by someone in the press pool to help her gain access to the event.

Of course, it's somewhat embarrassing that she was able to disrupt the ceremony; but she only had her voice and a small, yellow Falun Gong banner.

It's not like she...oh, I don't know...got past security and TOSSED A LIVE GRENADE AT HU!

Last May, during President Bush's visit to Tbilisi, Georgia, Vladimir Arutyunian threw a grenade that landed just 100 feet away from the President on the podium.

There's an enormous difference between that and a woman shouting.

On China TV: As Hu was speaking when yells of protesters became audible, the screen went black. When the feed came back the screen once again went black when woman was again heard. During CNN International's post-speech commentary, at mention of south lawn heckler, the screen also went black again. The CNN feed returned when the incident ended.

I think it's unfair for lib outlets, like the New York Times, to criticize security. The woman wasn't armed with anything but a voice and a piece of cloth.

Normally, libs would embrace such an expression of free speech. Instead, they focus on the supposed inadequacies of security here.

Security worked. No one was physically harmed.

For a moment, let's say the woman is a member of the press. Her display and heckling wasn't all that different from a Helen Thomas or David Gregory performance at a presidential press conference.

The lib media should be dwelling on the torture, the imprisonment, and the organ-harvesting done by the Chinese government, not a woman that was able to call attention to the atrocities.

Why are the libs jumping on the Bush Administration for this?

The simple answer:

They would rather support the human rights violations of China than President Bush.

Stephen Gregory, a spokesman for the Falun Gong-affiliated newspaper The Epoch Times, later identified the protester as Dr. Wang Wenyi, a pathologist and Falun Gong practitioner based in New York. She had received a press credential through The Epoch Times, Gregory said.
