Sarah Palin and Charlie Gibson

UPDATE, September 11, 2008: Charlie Gibson interviews Sarah Palin
_________________

The Democrats are going to have to give up on one of their favorite talking points du jour -- John McCain is keeping Sarah Palin away from the press.

Joe Biden said it this morning on Meet the Press:

SEN. BIDEN: Look, she's a smart, tough politician, and so I, I think she's going to be very formidable. But you know, eventually she's going to have to sit in front of you like I'm doing and have done. Eventually she's going to have to answer questions and not be sequestered. Eventually she's going to have to answer questions about her record.

Tom Brokaw ended his interview with Biden by taking a not too subtle shot at Palin.
MR. BROKAW: Our viewers should know that we have extended an invitation for Senator Biden's Republican counterpart, Governor Sarah Palin, to appear any Sunday prior to the election. We made the same invitation to Senator John McCain, who's at the top of the Republican ticket.

It wasn't what Brokaw said but how he said it that made the remark come off as snide.

It hasn't even been two weeks since McCain announced Palin as his choice for running mate. Palin accepted her party's nomination on Wednesday of last week, yet the Dems are whining that she's "sequestered" and isn't doing any interviews.

How lame!

I hope the Dems and their mouthpieces in the lib media now stop their non-stop yapping about Palin refusing to talk or being kept from talking to the press.

It turns out that several days ago the McCain campaigned offered ABC's Charlie Gibson an interview with Palin.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Republican vice presidential running mate Sarah Palin is offering her first televised interview to ABC News in the coming week in Alaska.

...A McCain-Palin adviser says an interview was offered to ABC’s Charlie Gibson several days ago and that they expect it to happen in the latter part of the week in Alaska. Palin is the governor of Alaska and is expected to return home at midweek after more joint appearances with McCain.

Well.

Sarah Palin will do an interview with ABC's Charlie Gibson.

She's NOT doing her first sit-down interview on FOX News. It will be on ABC, hardly friendly territory.

I suppose Gibson's inbox is filling up with questions for Palin from the extremists and lying smear-meisters over at Daily Kos.

It will be interesting to see how combative Gibson is when interviewing Palin.

I expect him to be very serious, no fawning. Nothing like the treatment Barack Obama gets from the lib media.

Gibson is in a tough position. No doubt, he wants to do all he can to help his ticket, Obama-Biden. But if he's too much of an attack dog, that will produce a backlash that's sure to help McCain-Palin. Gibson certainly wouldn't want to be responsible for that.

What a crock this is. Charlie Gibson is a respected professional journalist. He is going to ask her the same tough questions that he would ask any other candidate. Will that be too tough for her? Whatever his political affiliations are, and I don't think you are privy to that information, he will be professional and fair and ask a lot of hard questions. It will be interesting to hear her answers. She will not be bullying Charlie. He is a gentleman but will not allow her pit but with lipstick tactics to intimidate him.

I'd not talk to them either until I'd gotten an apology for the "You're Trig's grandma!" and the lies about "slashing" funds, et cetera ad nauseum.

If they can't be civil, don't talk to them. And they've shown that they can't be civil.

I agree, GG.

I can understand why she wanted to have some distance from the press after they savaged her.

To "anonymous"--

Charlie Gibson is a liberal. We are all privy to that information because he makes it very clear to viewers.

Mary you need a reality check. Did you watch the "This Week" interview with Obama? "Meet the Press" with Biden? Those lib media journalists aren't pussy footing around the candidates. If Sarah Palin supporters can't stand the heat, then get out of the kitchen and get another VP candidate.

The heat being thrown at Sarah Palin doesn't come close to what Obama has experienced from the mainstream media. There's no comparison.

He's had a relatively smooth ride thanks to his allies in the lib-populated news outlets.

I'm not saying they don't press him on some issues, but it's usually a rather gentle pressure. And Obama doesn't handle it well.

I didn't see much of This Week, but I did see all of Meet the Press.

John McCain, Sarah Palin, and their supporters can stand the heat.

Yes we can.

What a vile attack!

True colors on display.

Sarah Palin just appeared on Charlie Gibson's ABC Show tonight. He asked her lots of questions that I believe he didn't think she could answer. But she proved tonight that she is ready to lead! He tried getting her locked into a yes or no on a question, but she didn't allow that, knowing that it would put them in a corner that they may not want to be in.

Palin is not a liar. And,being the mother of a pregnant teenager does not make her a bad mother. Teenagers, the last time I looked, have a mind of their own. Doesn't matter how well we teach them, sometimes hearts will overplay the knowledge they have in their head. I commend them for making the decisions they have made, not doing away with the baby and getting married later. I believe Sarah Palin will make an excellent VP. After all, she hasn't said someone else would have been a better pick than her - she met the challenge head on!

I haven't seen all the interview yet.

From what I did see, I noticed that there was a good deal of very choppy editing. I would love to see the uncut version.

I did not come away with a good impression of Gibson.

It seemed like he was conducting a test. He seemed so arrogant. I thought Sarah Palin handled Gibson's interrogation extremely well.

The woman is intelligent and poised and tough.

I have never seen Obama or Biden subjected to an interview like this.

As I said, I haven't seen it all yet, but Gibson seemed rather hostile.

I have watched Charlie Gibson for years and was excited to see his interview with Sarah Palin. Not previously knowing his political affiliation, it became quite obvious that he is an Obama supporter. From the very beginning of the interview, he spoke in a very low voice and mumbled throughout its entirety. Acted like he had a mouthful of shit. Did not show any good graces he typically has for those he interviews. As a journalist, he certainly lost a lot of points with me. Aren't journalists supposed to be objective? Oh....and to Anonymous, you are vile and come off as trash.

The interview made one thing evident: Palin does not know what she's talking about when it comes to world affairs, even after the intense study session the Republicans have put her through this week. Half the interview consisted of Palin repeating the same scripted answers, two and three times. What's the Bush Doctrine? Please... this person is not ready or qualified to be a heartbeat away from the most powerful office on the planet.

Mike Westfall said...

If she repeated the same answers 2 or 3 times, it was because Charlie kept fishing for a different answer.

As far as "Bush Doctrine", that's a squishy term, depending on who's using it. Palin just wanted Gibson to define his terms. He wouldn't, of course, until AFTER Sarah answered the question. At any rate, it was an attempt to hang Bush around her neck.

Oh, and you'll notice he tried to paint her as a religious nut by misquoting what she had said in her church in Alaska. He quoted her as saying, "Our national leaders are sending US Soldiers out on a task that is from God," making it look like she had made an assertion that the war in Iraq was a mission from God.

Her "exact words," he insisted.

Conveniently, the first half of her sentence was omitted, the part with the actual verb of the entire thought.

In context, she had actually said, "Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending them out on a task that is from God. That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

Not, it is God's will, but, pray that what we are doing is according to His will.

Mary said...

Exactly, Mesa Mike. In another post, I made the same point that Gibson's precise definition of the Bush Doctrine isn't necessarily how others define it. He tried to make her appear clueless.

Ask Obama or Biden or McCain what the Bush Doctrine is and I'm sure their answers would differ. It was completely appropriate for Palin to want Gibson to be clear about his question.

I can only hope that Gibson is as helpful to the McCain-Palin ticket in the rest of the interview as he has been so far.

First, with so little time before the election, it DOES MATTER that she has not been available for interviews until now. If the dems did this with anyone the right would be screaming about how incompetent they must be. Sarah has needed time to prepare becuase most the issues she would face as VP she has no knowledge of. If it's not oil and pipelines, forge it.

Second, the Abraham Lincoln quote in the interview she supposedly was referencing - doesn't add up.
Palin said, "US Troops are on a mission from God."
Lincoln said we should NOT assume God is on our side, but ASK IF we are on God's. Sarah did what Lincoln said not to - she wasn't quoting him.

I don't agree with her positions. She should stop whining about her treatment by the media becuase we all know both sides get it just as bad all the time. The Obama campaign said they would not take part - of course Dems will blog and media will go after the buzz. But if she can't handle this then how can she handle the VP job?

Mary - go see Obama's interview on the O'Reilly Factor. That was tough, adversarial interviewing and his composure is much better. She did okay, for sure. but Charlie handled her with kids gloves compared to most. The only thing he did that was tough was bring her back to some questions she had tried to skirt or be evasive/ indirect about.

Okay. Mesa Mike - where did you find the whole video? If she said PRAY our troops are on a mission from God, essentially, then I concede the point. But I would like to see it.

Mary said...

This isn't video, but here is the story of Gibson's distortion of Palin's words.

Sarah Palin has been trashed by the lib media and her family has been abused. I think it's terribly unfair to say that she's whining. She isn't, though she certainly has reason to be troubled by the treatment she's received.

It took Barack Obama 772 days before he agreed to be interviewed by Chris Wallace on FOX News Sunday. He was afraid to go on FOX. He boycotted a primary debate that was to be held on FOX. He's afraid to appear at town hall meetings with McCain, something he previously promised he would do.

That's of concern to me when Obama, the TOP person on the ticket, is avoiding appearing with his opponent.

I think it's funny when Obama supporters complain about Palin not doing enough interviews when she didn't accept the nomination as McCain's VP until September 3.

There will be other interviews in the days ahead. Hopefully, those won't be edited like Gibson's and Palin will be allowed to actually answer questions.
