Chuck Todd and the Electoral College Path

Chuck Todd is NBC's political director.

He appeared on the October 19th Meet the Press, analyzing some new polls.

While talking to Tom Brokaw, Todd said something that I thought was remarkably lame.

CHUCK TODD: And, by the way, one other point about our map, and we're seeing this shift. It's almost as if the McCain campaign is conceding the popular vote. We're seeing a lot of tightening in places that while Obama probably won't carry them, he's not going to lose by large margins. That means the McCain path is solely now an electoral college path, and if he wins the electoral college, it's hard to see how he actually wins the popular vote, Tom.

It's almost as if Todd doesn't know how a U.S. president is elected.

Todd's ramblings about McCain conceding the popular vote are just goofy.

A president isn't elected by the popular vote.

Todd excitedly talks of polls tightening in places that Obama still probably won't carry, but he won't lose by large margins.

So what?

Todd concludes, "That means the McCain path is solely now an electoral college path."

What is Todd thinking?

That sounds so stupid.

A football analogy: It would be like an announcer saying that the Packers have conceded the total yards gained and are now solely focusing on scoring the most points to win.

Yeah, that's how the game is played.

McCain isn't conceding anything.

The path to the White House for both McCain and Obama has always been an electoral college path.
