It was Roberta McCain unleashed on Wednesday's Tonight Show.
John McCain's 97-year-old mother was Jay Leno's guest.
She really is amazing. She's sharp and looks great.
The woman speaks her mind.
In the very brief interview, she covered a lot of ground.
She talked a little bit about her background. Roberta McCain has a twin sister living in Los Angeles. She eloped at 21 years of age and had 3 children.
Leno asked Roberta McCain what kind of boy John McCain was.
She said, "He was the sweetest child I've ever seen in my life."
Leno followed up, "So what happened?"
"You're right. I've asked myself that."
As I said, she's very sharp.
It was interesting when Leno brought up McCain's time as a P.O.W. He asked how hard it was for her as a mother, saying it must have been "just incredible."
ROBERTA McCAIN: Well, it wasn't. It really wasn't. I have absolute faith in God. I have every moment, have faith in what our country was doing. I believed in it. I still believe in it. My son... Keep in mind this was his profession. He volunteered.... You do your duty and you stand by what you claim. And frankly, I'm glad that I was tested because you always wonder will you stand up for what you claim you believe in, and you're not really sure. Well, I did stand up to every principle that our country has given us, in this blessed country.
Leno then wanted to talk about some of the commentators on the Left and the Right.
He asked, "Who bothers you on the Left?"
She quickly responded, "Olbermann."
Leno asked, "What's wrong with Keith Olbermann?"
ROBERTA McCAIN: I don't know that anything's wrong with him. I just, myself, I can't figure out that type of person who really more or less gets joy out of denigrating people, humiliating... I'm just not that type of person and I don't have friends like that. And thank God I'm not around people like him.
Leno then inquired about commentators on the Right.
Instead of citing someone she doesn't like, Roberta McCain spoke of someone she likes, David Brooks. She says she always reads his columns in the New York Times and called him a "wonderful writer."
Leno asked her what she thought of Rush Limbaugh. "Are you a fan of him?"
ROBERTA McCAIN: I belong to the Republican Party.... What he thinks about or represents of the Republican Party has nothing to do with my side of it. I don't know what the man means. I don't know what he's talking about.
Well also, I think that Chairman of the Republican Party, Steele, was exactly right when he defined this man as an entertainer. And to my horror, the Republican Party made him back up on it. Limbaugh, you're a compliment when you say the man is an entertainer. I don't know what he is, but he does not represent the Republican Party that I belong to.
That's exactly what Leno and other Leftists wanted to hear, Limbaugh being bashed.
Leno brought up the story of the speeding ticket.
Roberta McCain said John has told that story a hundred times.
True.
She's only had one speeding ticket, but it was for driving 112 MPH in Arizona. She said it was a Sunday, there was no traffic, and she didn't realize how fast she was going.
Kevin Spacey, Leno's first guest, interrupted at one point during the interview to suggest that she should run for office.
Roberta McCain said she could never get elected because she's not diplomatic enough.
She's got that right.

I loved her comments about Keith Olbermann, and what she said about her son being a POW. What a brave and classy woman.
She is remarkable.
