Lois Lerner: Emails Lost

LOIS LERNER: Sometimes stuff just happens.

That's a completely unacceptable explanation.

Lois G. Lerner, the employee at the center of the IRS tea party targeting scandal, wanted to recover files from her computer hard drive after it crashed in 2011, but when told it was impossible, she took a philosophical view.

“Sometimes stuff just happens,” she said in a 2011 email to the IRS tech staff that tried to recover documents from the hard drive.

As it tries to respond to congressional inquiries about Ms. Lerner and the tea party scandal, the IRS has recently found itself on the defensive after admitting — more than a year into the investigations — that some of Ms. Lerner’s emails are irretrievably lost in the wake of the hard drive crash.

In a series of documents sent to Congress on Friday — the traditional day for dumping bad news — the IRS detailed the steps it took to try to account for the emails, including going to other agency employees and asking them to see if they had any messages stored that included Ms. Lerner as a sender of recipient.

And the IRS also released the back-and-forth between Ms. Lerner and Lillie Wilburn, field director for the IRS headquarters’ Customer Support Service Center.

“I checked with the technician, and he still has your drive. He wanted to exhaust all avenues to recover the data before sending it to the ‘hard drive cemetery,’” she wrote on July 20, 2011. “Unfortunately, after receiving assistance from several highly skilled technicians including HP experts, he still cannot recover the data.”

She mentioned “one other possibility” she was trying and promised an update.

Two weeks later, she said the drive had been sent to a forensic lab for a final attempt, and a few days after that Ms. Wilburn delivered the fatal news: “The sectors on your hard drive were bad which made your data unrecoverable.”

It’s not just Lois Lerner’s e-mails. The Internal Revenue Service says it can’t produce e-mails from six more employees involved in the targeting of conservative groups, according to two Republicans investigating the scandal.

The IRS told Ways and Means chairman Dave Camp and subcommittee chairman Charles Boustany that computer crashes resulted in additional lost e-mails, including from Nikole Flax, the chief of staff to former IRS commissioner Steven Miller, who was fired in the wake of the targeting scandal.

The revelation about Lerner’s e-mails rekindled the scandal and today’s news has further inflamed Republicans. Camp and Boustany are now demanding a special prosecutor to investigate “every angle” of the targeting. They expressed particular outrage that the agency has known since February that it would not be able to produce the e-mails requested by the committee yet did not apprise the committee of that fact, and they charged in a statement that the IRS is attempting to “cover up the fact that it convenient lost key documents in the investigation.”

Evidence disappeared. Sorry.

Maria Cantwell - Redskins Name Change

The Democrats, the party of slavery and the party of vehement opposition to civil rights legislation, have decided the most pressing issue facing the nation is changing the name of the Washington Redskins.

Harry Reid, the man who called Obama a "'light-skinned' African American 'with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one,'" believes that the Washington Redskins must be coerced into a name change.

Jobs? Education? Health care for veterans?

That stuff can wait, but we as a nation cannot move forward until the Washington Redskins are stripped of the name.

Half the U.S. Senate urged NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday to change the Washington Redskins' name, saying it is a racist slur and the time is ripe to replace it.

In one letter, 49 senators cited the NBA's quick action recently to ban Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life after he was heard on an audio recording making offensive comments about blacks. They said Goodell should formally push to rename the Redskins.

"We urge you and the National Football League to send the same clear message as the NBA did: that racism and bigotry have no place in professional sports," read the letter, which did not use the word "Redskins."

Sen. Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat, wrote his own letter saying he doesn't believe that retaining the Redskin name "is appropriate in this day and age." He described himself as "one of your great fans for both the game and you personally."

...Last month, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., took to the Senate floor to say Snyder should "do what is morally right" and change the name. Thursday's letters were aimed directly at Goodell.

...Reid and Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., led the letter-writing effort. All senators on the letter are Democrats. Cantwell spokesman Jared Leopold said Republicans were not asked to participate.

Cantwell later said on the Senate floor that she was inviting Republicans to sign the letter or write their own.

"I'm convinced that if each member of this body speaks on this issue and is forceful in their resolve, that we can help initiate change," she said.

Democrats not signing the letter were Tim Kaine and Mark Warner of nearby Virginia, where the team's headquarters are; Mark Pryor of Arkansas, in a tight re-election race this year; and Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Joe Donnelly of Indiana, two of their party's more moderate lawmakers.

These Democrats are insane.

Gee, maybe addressing the VA Scandal would be MORALLY RIGHT.

Maybe taking the deaths of four Americans in the Benghazi terrorist attack seriously, rather than dismissing the cover-up by the Obama administration as a phony scandal, would be MORALLY RIGHT.

It's outrageous that the Democrats are attempting to direct the nation's focus on the Redskins debate.

Is this really what we send senators to Washington to do, to write letters demanding that a team change its nickname?

That is pure lunacy.

Clearly, the Democrats want to talk about this issue rather than the train wreck that is ObamaCare or the litany of scandals embroiling Obama and his administration.

Maria Cantwell is really a piece of work.

Benghazi is not a phony scandal.

The use of the IRS to target and harass conservative Americans is not a phony scandal.

The fact that Obama knew the VA was seriously failing our veterans and did nothing to fix the abuses is not a phony scandal.

What is phony? The alleged outrage over the Redskins.

If Maria Cantwell really cares so much about the offensiveness of Redskins and its use is a moral outrage, why doesn't she write a little letter to get a high school in her home state to drop its own Redskins nickname?

Here in the other Washington, after 90 years as the Redskins, Port Townsend High School agreed this year to drop its nickname, despite strong opposition. John Stroeder, a star player for the 1976 PT Redskins basketball team who went on the play for the Milwaukee Bucks, told the school board “If you change the name, I’m done here,” the Port Angeles Daily News reported. “I will take my jersey out of the [high school trophy] cabinet.” The Olympic Peninsula town’s school board is still mulling over a replacement mascot, however, so Redskins prevail for another season.

Same for the Willpinit High School Redskins, over in Spokane County. Except they have no plans to change their mascot. At a school where more than 90 percent of the students are Indian - in the heart of the Spokane Reservation where author Sherman Alexie was raised – they’re sticking with Redskins. Said Tim Ames, superintendent of Wellpinit schools, this week: “I’ve talked to our students, our parents and our community about this and nobody finds any offense at all in it. ‘Redskins’ is not an insult to our kids. ‘Wagon burners’ is an insult. ‘Prairie niggers’ is an insult. Those are very upsetting to our kids. But ‘Redskins’ is an honorable name we wear with pride. … In fact, I’d like to see somebody come up here and try to change it.”

Ames was talking to ESPN.com’s Ricky Reilly, who argued in favor of Redskins, in both Washingtons. He wondered how to tell the Willpinit Redskins the “name they wear proudly across their chests is insulting them. Because they have no idea.”

Interesting, isn't it?

Cantwell needs to get busy writing letters to the 90 percent of Native American students at Willpinit High School and inform them they are racists or bigots or just plain bad people for embracing a nickname like Redskins.

What is this really about?

The Democrats are using this small issue in the scheme of things to distract from other far more important matters.

It's a diversion to protect Obama. It's a way to keep people from the talking about the disaster that is the Obama presidency, home and abroad.

Key members of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform expressed outrage at revelations made in newly released emails showing ex-IRS official Lois Lerner coordinating with the Department of Justice on prosecuting nonprofit groups.

...“The release of new documents underscores the political nature of IRS Tea Party targeting and the extent to which supposed apolitical officials took direction from elected Democrats,” Oversight chairman Rep. Darrell Issa said in a statement. “These e-mails are part of an overwhelming body of evidence that political pressure from prominent Democrats led to the targeting of Americans for their political beliefs.”

“Now I see why the IRS is scared to give up the rest of Lois Lerner’s emails,” said Oversight Economic Growth subcommittee chairman Rep. Jim Jordan.

“Not only do these e-mails further prove the coordination among the IRS, the Federal Election Commission (FEC), the Justice Department and committee Democrats to target conservatives, they also show that had our committee not requested the Inspector General’s investigation when we did, Eric Holder’s politicized Justice Department would likely have been leveling trumped up criminal charges against Tea Party groups to intimidate them from exercising their Constitutional rights,” Jordan said.

The emails were obtained through a lawsuit filed by the watchdog group Judicial Watch, and were not provided to Oversight, which voted to hold Lerner in contempt of Congress.

I keep thinking of Obama in his pre-Super Bowl interview with Bill O'Reilly, claiming that the IRS scandal was a FOX News creation.

Obama assured Americans that there's "not even a smidgen of corruption" in the IRS scandal.

Fallon Slams CPAC, Republicans

Jimmy Fallon began his Tonight Show monologue with a string of jokes about Republicans and CPAC. Yes, CPAC.

It's easy to imagine the writing process:

So predictable. So boring.

JIMMY FALLON: ‏A big day for Republicans. They came from all over the country to Washington D.C. today for the start of the Conservative Political Action Conference, otherwise known as 'Khaki-Palooza.'

I thought this was great. Republican Senator Mitch McConnell kicked off the conference, this is true, he walked on stage with a rifle while Bon Jovi's 'Livin' on a Prayer' played in the background. Then his wife was like, 'No more Nyquil for you, mister.'

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie also gave a speech at the conference, and some experts say it could be his chance to turn things around. Turn things around, which is also what people do whenever they get to a bridge in New Jersey.

This is a little unusual. The GOP is releasing several short documentaries about Senate candidates to give the public a look at their personal lives. So, if you're the kind of person who's excited to see several documentaries about Senate candidates, ask your doctor about Zoloft.

Fallon followed this with some items from Obama's budget, mocking conservatives' claims that it isn't realistic and "more of a liberal wish list."

He didn't directly ridicule Obama.

Then, Fallon did a joke about the "shouting match" that "Democratic Congressman Elijah Cummings" had with "Republican Darrell Issa." Fallon said Issa "turned off his microphone during a hearing." Fallon said nothing about the reason for the hearing, the IRS scandal. He said nothing about Lois Lerner pleading the Fifth, nothing about the corruption and abuse of power in the Obama administration.
