Wisconsin Recount Update - Day 9: Hillary Up 49

Here's the update from Day 9 of the Wisconsin 2016 presidential recount.

From the Wisconsin Elections Commission:

Numbers for the City of Milwaukee do not include absentee ballots, which have not yet been recounted. Milwaukee counts its absentee ballots centrally (not at the polling place) on Election Night. When those absentee ballots have been counted the numbers will be updated.

Explanations provided by clerks for the differences in numbers between canvass and the recount are also contained in the attached Explanation of Changes per Reporting Unit PDF

Ashland County: Original election results were inadvertently entered as recount results for the Day 6 update. The recount results have been correctly updated to the Day 9 spreadsheet.

Calumet County: Increase of 15 ballots in City of Chilton Wards 1-5 because ballots were marked incorrectly on Election Day. Voter intent was determined during recount canvas. +11 votes for Trump/Pence and +4 votes for Clinton/Kaine.

Dane County: Increase of 12 votes in City of Verona Wards 2-4 due to ballots being counted as part of City of Verona Wards 1,5 in error on Election Day.

Eau Claire County: Increase of 14 votes in City of Eau Claire Ward 39 due to ballots that were marked incorrectly on Election Day, where the recount canvass determined voter intent, and the addition of 5 absentee ballots that were not counted on Election Day.

Waukesha County has finished its recount.

Waukesha County announced it finished processing ballots late Friday morning, December 9th.

The Waukesha County clerk says it's a relief to have all the ballots counted but her work isn't completely done. Election officials spent several hours going over the vote totals.

Nine days and 240,000 ballots later, Waukesha County can now join the more than 60 counties that have completed the recount.

...[Kathleen Novack, Waukesha County clerk] says the results from the recount and election night will change by about 80 votes, spread out among all the candidates.

...Across the state, Hillary Clinton is currently up 609 votes while President-elect Donald Trump is up 560.

With 89 percent of the recount complete, Hillary has gained only 49 votes over Trump. Out of millions cast, the results have barely changed.

What a total waste!

The Pi Day of the century, 3.14/15 is only a little over a week away. For a time now Pi Day has been all about fun and of course pie, but with the way in recent years, science and even reality itself have come more and more under attack, I’m thinking maybe this year it’s time for Pi Day to emerge as something more than just fun.

For so much of our history, the people of our country and the world have benefited greatly from the science-based reality that has shaped America’s future. Science may be based on numbers, but science's actual value is in its humanity. It's beyond doubt that through science and the honest representation of reality our lives have become safer, healthier and happier.

Yet today the very science that has done so much to reduce suffering in our lives is now under attack. From the climate, to vaccines, to Wisconsin's own Governor Walker’s belief that there are more votes in denying evolution than there are in embracing it, clearly somewhere something has gone very wrong. There is more than enough blame to go all around for how we got here, but maybe this is one of those times that where we are is not nearly as important as where we need to be.

Maybe rather than a debate of our differences, what we need is a celebration of what we share. At Penzeys we think Pi Day could grow into just the holiday we need. There really is no time to lose to get on to celebrating the truth of science-based reality and the math behind it. And there is also no time better than now to get back to celebrating the kindness, compassion and the nurturing nature of our shared humanity that has always been behind the very best that science has brought to our lives.

In Pi, the number is all the value and beauty and wonder that is at the heart of the reality science holds. In the gift of a good slice of pie, the desert is all the kindness and compassion that our shared humanity encompasses. Pi Day really is ready to become so much more. So we are reaching out to our customers for help. We need your stories and a recipe or two. We already have good stories in the works for living with climate change, the value of vaccines, evolution, and the psychology/brain chemistry of why as humans we are so resistant to seeing the certainty of climate change.

Where we still really need your help is in finding an economist or two to speak to why our deficit spending has left our economy and our humanity in so much better shape than what Europe is facing today. And we could also use one more person with the knowledge to speak to the monetary cost and the human cost of sending to prison people who simply need treatment instead.

For recipes we are flexible. Pies are great but not necessary. Maybe you have another baked good you like to share. Or possibly you have a way you like to make some other circular item: a sliced carrot recipe, scallops are always popular, or even a beet salad that's an old family tradition would do the trick. We really are flexible.

The important thing is if you have the science, or the numbers, or the knowledge that is needed for good policy making in the fields of economics or restorative justice please actually contact us. Penzey Calls Walker and His Supporters Segregationists, Racists

I think Bill Penzey is crazy.

It's not a smart business move to alienate and insult your clientele.

Penzey, owner of Penzeys Spices, continues to rip his customers, calling the governor of Wisconsin a segregationist and his supporters living outside the city of Milwaukee segregationists.

Crazy?

Absolutely.

Penzey's means to spew his crap in the catalog he sends to customers and potential customers. His catalog is his soapbox.

A short while back I found myself watching a good documentary, The Bus, on iTunes. Through most of my childhood my parents drove VW bugs and buses. Over those years they became so much more than just a means for getting around. For us it was almost as if they became an extension of our family. About 22 minutes into the film we get to the ‘60s era and this wonderful woman with flowing hair and a sky blue dress appears and says, “The whole idea was to feed the world with love. It was neat.” My ears perked up at that, but then she continues, saying , “I thought, wow, this is great, this is going to change the world, but it didn’t. It didn’t.”

Later in the film she is introduced. She is Eve Muir, wife and partner of John Muir who literally wrote the book on Volkswagens. With the nature of VWs back then, his book How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive was never far from the top of the piles of books we had around our house growing up. Looking back, their book truly was a revolution. Its breakthrough was in understanding that keeping something alive has to be about more than just nuts and bolts. It also has to be about creating a mindset that understands just how connected we all are to the world around us and gets us to believe that how we choose to journey through life really does matter.

I had not thought of Muir’s book in quite some time, but I found myself thinking on our own journey to keep the spirit of cooking alive just how close to their approach we’ve ended up. I can’t help but feel we’ve gotten further because of the path they created for all of us to travel. So thanks, Eve and John Muir, and sorry to disagree, but you did change the world. The way you lived your lives
made it a better place. And what better time for a new Summer of Love, so here is our catalog of VW owners. They are certainly worth sitting with for a while. Great recipes, too.

And letters. With every issue we get such thoughtful letters, but somehow our last catalog set so much more in motion. As our new website takes shape we need to have a place to share your comments. The voices of those who Cook-to-Love are something the world needs to hear much more. Thanks to everyone who wrote and a very special thank-you to Wendy Tien. Her letter is so personal and so perfectly illustrates why many of our communities are still so segregated today. And though Wendy’s letter was just meant for me to read, I asked if we could share her words with all of our readers. With great strength, she said yes. We are all in her debt.

Segregation is no longer some grim-faced governor standing on the steps of the Capitol shouting, “Segregation now-tomorrow-forever!” Segregation today has grown into a multi-step process. It starts with the new, more polished leaders who, with a smile, send ever-so-subtle messages that America is a whites-first nation. Next, AM radio personalities turn that smile to a sneer and pass it on to their listeners, who turn that sneer into anger. That anger does an amazing job of producing lopsided vote totals in places with little diversity, but it’s poison to everything that is good in our lives and a roadblock across the path of Kindness that leads to cooking.

'Slenderman' Creator, Eric Knudson, Saddened By Stabbing

Don't hate "Slenderman."

It's not his fault that Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, both 12 years old, chose to stab and attempt to murder another 12-year-old girl.

Geyser and Weier were just one millimeter from killing their victim, barely missing a major artery near her heart.

The man who created Slenderman, a spooky character popularized in short stories, video games and films, and an administrator of a website that collected the works expressed their condolences Wednesday to a 12-year-old girl who was stabbed by two fans and to others affected by the tragedy.

A spokeswoman for Slenderman creator Eric Knudsen and an administrator for creepypasta.wikia.com said they have been overwhelmed with calls and messages since news broke that the girls charged in the weekend stabbing told police they wanted to curry favor with Slenderman and prove he was real.

"I am deeply saddened by the tragedy in Wisconsin and my heart goes out to the families of those affected by this terrible act," Knudsen said in a statement released by spokeswoman Sue Procko.

Creepypasta administrator David Morales said the site clearly states the stories there are fiction and its rules bar use by anyone under 13.

"We are not teaching children to believe in a fictional monster, nor are we teaching them to be violent," Morales wrote in an email.

He noted that administrators have not allowed any new Slenderman stories to be posted since 2012 because they want users to come up with fresh ideas. Since Knudsen posted the first Slenderman stories and photos in an online forum in 2009, hundreds of other writers, artists and programmers have created horror stories featuring the tall, thin, faceless man in a black suit.

"Overall, the community has deep condolences to the family of the victim and all those who were involved," Morales wrote.

The two 12-year-old Wisconsin girls charged as adults in the stabbing face 65 years in prison. The victim remains hospitalized.

Slenderman fans defended the stories and the community that's gathered around them.

I don't blame Eric Knudson or "Slenderman" or Creepypasta for this crime.

Twelve-year-old people in our society know that murder is illegal. They should know that killing is morally wrong.

We're talking really basic "do's and don'ts" here.

I think it's ridiculous to cut Geyser and Weier slack because they're just "children."

Twelve-year-olds know you don't lure a friend out to the woods and stab her 19 times, within a millimeter of her life.

This notion that the Internet has some incredible power over individuals, especially children, is BS.

Nothing on the Internet can wipe out one's morals and turn one into a monster.

Geyser and Weier aren't victims of the Internet.

Are we really willing to accept the idea that stories on a website make a 12-year-old incapable of knowing that killing a peer is wrong? Are we to believe that a 12-year-old should not be held responsible for planning a peer's murder and actually carrying out the plan?

I will not.

This crime is horrible. The stabbing was intentional. It was planned for months and the attack was meant to kill the victim.

Listening to people blame the crime on the dark recesses of the Internet and paint the attackers as poor, mixed up little girls, victims of Creepypasta, a force greater than their consciences, is horrible as well.

Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier are 12-year-old girls.

They've been charged as adults, accused of stabbing another 12-year-old girl, 19 times! Geyser and Weier are accused of plotting to kill her, a plot that was several months in the making.

Geyser and Weier are being held on charges of attemped first degree intentional homicide.

Thankfully, amazingly, the victim is currently in stable condition.

12-year-old Morgan Geyser, and 12-year-old Anissa Weier were charged as adults on Monday, June 2nd — accused of stabbing another 12-year-old girl over the weekend. Apparently, all three of the girls in this case were friends.

The two 12-year-old girls are accused of plotting their friend’s murder for months — and attempting to kill her this weekend.

“Based on our investigation, it is believed that the suspects had planned to
kill the victim for several months. The Waukesha Police Department is deeply saddened that this 12-year-old girl had to suffer through this horrific crime,” said Waukesha Police Chief Russell Jack.

Each of the girls faces one count of attempted first degree intentional homicide as party to a crime — and each faces 60 years in prison.

...The criminal complaint in the case says on Saturday, May 31st, a citizen called Waukesha police to report a stabbing — after locating a girl on the sidewalk in the area of Rivera Drive and Big Bend Road.

The complaint says the girl told the man: “Help me, I’ve been stabbed.”

The man called 911 and tried to apply pressure to her wounds — and stayed until the Fire Department arrived.

When officials spoke with the stabbing victim, the complaint says she told them she was stabbed in the woods by her best friend, Morgan Geyser.

The complaint says the victim suffered 19 stab wounds — and was rushed into surgery at the hospital.

Doctors at the hospital reported she was “lucky to be alive” — according to the complaint.

“One suspect held the victim down while the other suspect stabbed her 19 times in the arms, legs and torso. Many of the stab wounds struck major organs. But, incredibly and thankfully, the victim survived this brutal assault,” Chief Jack said.

The complaint says police spoke with Weier — who spoke about a website called “CreepyPasta.”

The complaint says Weier explained this was a website that talked about horror stories — and people can create their own stories.

It is on this website that Weier told police she learned about “Slenderman” — the leader of CreepyPasta. Just below Slenderman is the killer. Just below the killer is the proxy. In order to be a proxy, Weier explained, you have to kill someone — to show your dedication to Slenderman, according to the complaint.

The complaint says Weier told police many people do not believe Slenderman is real — and she said she wanted to prove the skeptics wrong.

What I dread is the drivel from all the apologists that is sure to surface in defense of these "innocent" little girls.

Poor Morgan and Anissa! They're victims, too! They're victims of bad stuff on the Internet. Blame the Internet!

Sorry. I'm not buying that.

These girls had to know that attempting to kill another girl was wrong. If not wrong, then they had to know the act was illegal. They had to know that they were committing a heinous crime.

No excuses.

Are both girls so mentally ill that they both completely lost touch with reality?

That's not impossible, but it's highly, highly unlikely.

Weren't Geyser and Weier taught that plotting to kill another girl was an immoral act? Did they ever hear of "Thou shalt not kill"?

I think believing in God would have worked out much better than believing in "Slenderman."

As a 12-year-old, no matter how much weird Internet stuff I read, I would not have been convinced to murder. A 12-year-old knows right from wrong. No website could alter her morals.

I wonder how the parents of Geyser and Weier missed the truth about their daughters. There had to be signs that they were planning to murder someone. This was no little prank. This wasn't bullying a peer. This was attempted murder.

They stabbed their victim 19 times!

Geyser and Weier need to be held accountable for their actions, not coddled.
