Gov. Matt Blunt Reacts to Barack Obama's Truth Squads

Barack Obama has dispatched his "Truth Squads" to threaten and intimidate people and groups daring to criticize Obama.

The campaign has even appealed to the Justice Department to shut up individuals, like Stanley Kurtz, in an effort to squelch free speech.

Charlie Sykes alerts people to Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt's statement on the Obama campaign's use of Missouri law enforcement to target anyone who lies or runs a misleading TV ad during the presidential campaign.

Gov. Blunt Statement on Obama Campaign’s Abusive Use of Missouri Law Enforcement
JEFFERSON CITY - Gov. Matt Blunt today issued the following statement on news reports that have exposed plans by U.S. Senator Barack Obama to use Missouri law enforcement to threaten and intimidate his critics.

“St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch, St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce, Jefferson County Sheriff Glenn Boyer, and Obama and the leader of his Missouri campaign Senator Claire McCaskill have attached the stench of police state tactics to the Obama-Biden campaign.

“What Senator Obama and his helpers are doing is scandalous beyond words, the party that claims to be the party of Thomas Jefferson is abusing the justice system and offices of public trust to silence political criticism with threats of prosecution and criminal punishment.

“This abuse of the law for intimidation insults the most sacred principles and ideals of Jefferson. I can think of nothing more offensive to Jefferson’s thinking than using the power of the state to deprive Americans of their civil rights. The only conceivable purpose of Messrs. McCulloch, Obama and the others is to frighten people away from expressing themselves, to chill free and open debate, to suppress support and donations to conservative organizations targeted by this anti-civil rights, to strangle criticism of Mr. Obama, to suppress ads about his support of higher taxes, and to choke out criticism on television, radio, the Internet, blogs, e-mail and daily conversation about the election.

“Barack Obama needs to grow up. Leftist blogs and others in the press constantly say false things about me and my family. Usually, we ignore false and scurrilous accusations because the purveyors have no credibility. When necessary, we refute them. Enlisting Missouri law enforcement to intimidate people and kill free debate is reminiscent of the Sedition Acts - not a free society.”

That's a very strong statement.

It's not an overreaction. It's spot-on, perfectly appropriate. Obama is abusing the law for purposes of intimidation.

For years now, we've had to listen to elected Democrats, the liberal media, and the politically vocal Hollywood Leftists and other celebrities whine about the Bush administration trampling on civil liberties and the chill wind of censorship.

They've been yapping incessantly about Bush shredding the Constitution and silencing his critics and abusing his power.

The fact that Barack Obama is threatening his critics with prosecution is the height of hypocrisy. Writing letters to the Justice Department in an attempt to shut people up?

Our own Russ Feingold has referred to Bush as King George and stated, "This administration has done the greatest assault on our Constitution perhaps in American history."

Hey, Russ! Sen. Russ Feingold!

This is Obama sending out Goon Squads posing as Truth Squads, trying to frighten people into silence.

Care to comment?

I find the Obama campaign's heavy-handed tactics to intimidate individuals as well as and groups to be stunning. If this is a glimpse of America under an Obama administration, people should run to the polls to vote for John McCain on Election Day.

I find the Left's tacit approval of this censorship and assault on the Bill of Rights to be un-American.

High-level politicians, including Barack Obama, are in quest of limiting the American peoples’ access to on-demand, short term financial support. A number of cities and townships are attempting to enforce limitations on where these lawful businesses can operate. Still worse, is that several states, including Georgia and North Carolina, have effectively forced all-out bans on the trade, with several more trying to follow suit. Citizens all around the nation are looking to have their voices paid attention to by aggressive legislation that would eradicate the payday loan industry nationwide; Obama, and other mislead political officials, are pushing for an absolute ban in the name of personal political gain, in spite of the hundreds of thousands of eventual lost jobs in an already difficult economy.

Good for Gov. Blunt. Transparency is key, and his administration has made major efforts to push for clear and accountable government. Glad he's not letting the Obama campaign or anyone else subvert the free democratic process in our state.

I'm impressed with Blunt's reaction.

What Obama is trying to do in Missouri should concern every American.
