The Justice Department secretly obtained two months of telephone records of reporters and editors for The Associated Press in what the news cooperative's top executive called a "massive and unprecedented intrusion" into how news organizations gather the news.
The records obtained by the Justice Department listed outgoing calls for the work and personal phone numbers of individual reporters, for general AP office numbers in New York, Washington and Hartford, Conn., and for the main number for the AP in the House of Representatives press gallery, according to attorneys for the AP. It was not clear if the records also included incoming calls or the duration of the calls.
In all, the government seized the records for more than 20 separate telephone lines assigned to AP and its journalists in April and May of 2012. The exact number of journalists who used the phone lines during that period is unknown, but more than 100 journalists work in the offices where phone records were targeted, on a wide array of stories about government and other matters.
In a letter of protest sent to Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday, AP President and Chief Executive Officer Gary Pruitt said the government sought and obtained information far beyond anything that could be justified by any specific investigation. He demanded the return of the phone records and destruction of all copies.
This is outrageous.
BUT, you made your bed, AP. Lie in it.
You're an arm of the Obama administration's media army. You protected this guy. You've aided Obama's rise to power.
What now?
Any regrets?
I suppose Obama and his team thought you wouldn't mind. You cover Obama's ass. You kiss Obama's ass. You worship Obama's ass.
How's that working out?
Lord, what fools these Leftists be!

I assume Obama was about to go on to say that the people have the power in this campaign, not him.
That's true.
However, Obama's choice of words, that he's a prop, is as unfortunate as it is spot-on.
He's on stage, serving as part of the scene in the theatrics.
His role as a prop has been utterly ineffective. He's not really part of the action.
He's just there, an empty suit, not making things better via his policies or his leadership.
And then the instances when he abused the office and grabbed power, dictating and oppressing, the imperial president, Obama made things worse.
And then we have the mainstream media, "propping" up Obama, shamelessly hiding the truth from the American public, going AWOL time and time again, on Fast and Furious, Benghazi, the oppression of Catholics' religious liberty, even the economy.
The last four years the story has been the Leftists propping up the prop in chief.
President Barack Obama’s campaign raised more than $150 million in September, which was a record haul for the 2012 cycle, but the campaign may be actively trying to block a story in the works about a “blockbuster donor scandal” that could put its fundraising numbers under intense scrutiny.
According to the Washington Examiner, “a taxpayer watchdog group conducted a nine-month investigation” and uncovered “thousands of cases of credit card solicitations and donations” to the Obama campaign. Many of those donations have allegedly come from overseas and may be in violation of federal election laws.
National outlets are preparing stories on the matter, and the Obama campaign has been trying to block those stories from being published.
Screw the Obama campaign and its efforts to block the stories.
If the Obama campaign is violating federal election laws, the stories should run as soon as possible.
The American people need to know if Obama is a crook.

Paul Ryan weighs in on Fast and Furious, one of Obama's scandal.
From Paul Ryan:
It's time for Attorney General Holder to step aside.
He's misled Congress, and entirely botched the investigation of the Operation Fast and Furious debacle -- yet he still leads our nation's Justice Department.
It's just another example of the Obama Administration's transparent hypocrisy that despite the tragic and very human toll of this scandal, Attorney General Holder refuses to resign -- and President Obama refuses to remove him.
It's up to the American people to replace both of them on November 6. Let's restore justice to the Justice Department.
Donate now to vote Barack Obama and his liberal allies out of office on Election Day -- and help secure a victory for Romney-Ryan and the Republican team.
Thank you,
Paul Ryan
Holder should resign because of his lies about Fast and Furious.
That makes me think about the LIES Obama and his administration told about the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya.
I'd like to see Susan Rice step aside - LIAR.
I'd like to see Hillary Clinton step aside - LIAR.
On Sunday night, Spanish-language station Univision— one of the only networks to provide critical coverage of President Obama’s failures in office instead of cream-puff interviews — broke open the Fast and Furious investigation, revealing new evidence of weapons smuggling and displaying shocking new images of the bloody aftermath of the government-supported gun-smuggling program.
The Univision report undermines the integrity of the recently released DOJ inspector general report on Operation Fast and Furious, already heavily criticized as an attempt to whitewash criminal activity within the Obama administration.
The hour-long Univision report revealed the existence of another 57 guns recovered by Mexican authorities, including some of those used in the mass-murder at a party just one year after Obama’s inauguration:
On January 30, 2010, a commando of at least 20 hit men parked themselves outside a birthday party of high school and college students in Villas de Salvarcar, Ciudad Juarez. Near midnight, the assassins, later identified as hired guns for the Mexican cartel La Linea, broke into a one-story house and opened fire on a gathering of nearly 60 teenagers. Outside, lookouts gunned down a screaming neighbor and several students who had managed to escape. Fourteen young men and women were killed, and 12 more were wounded before the hit men finally fled.
Indirectly, the United States government played a role in the massacre by supplying some of the firearms used by the cartel murderers. Three of the high caliber weapons fired that night in Villas de Salvarcar were linked to a gun tracing operation run by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), according to a Mexican army document obtained exclusively by Univision News.
It's time for Obama to be held accountable for HIS program, a program that resulted in mass-murder.

Asked about the Fast and Furious program at the Univision forum on Thursday, President Obama falsely claimed that the program began under President George W. Bush.
“I think it’s important for us to understand that the Fast and Furious program was a field-initiated program begun under the previous administration,” the president said. “When Eric Holder found out about it, he discontinued it. We assigned a inspector general to do a thorough report that was just issued, confirming that in fact Eric Holder did not know about this, that he took prompt action and the people who did initiate this were held accountable.”
In actuality, the Fast and Furious program was started in October 2009, nine months into the Obama presidency.
Previous programs involving ATF agents allowing guns to “walk” across the border so as to trace them were run during the Bush presidency, but not this particular “field-initiated program.”
It makes me sick that the liberal media are so deep in the tank for Obama that they have let him get away with this crap, protecting Obama every step of the way.
It's sick. It's a dereliction of duty by the press.
Obama has to tell the truth. He has his drones repeating his false talking points.
For God's sake, we need a president to tell us the truth.
We need the media to hold the U.S. president accountable, not protect and promote him, not campaign for him.
Hell is freezing over. Pigs are flying. Obama faced the White House press corps today, the first time since March 2012.
He had no choice, I suppose, after Robert Gibbs, Obama campaign senior adviser, sounded like a blithering idiot yesterday morning, trying to defend Obama's failure to make himself available to the press and his failure to be transparent on Fast and Furious.
President Obama, in a rare press conference Monday, disputed accusations that he’s running an unfairly negative re-election campaign – as he emerged to take questions from the White House press corps amid mounting criticism that he’s been ducking them.
The president answered a wide range of questions during the 20-minute question-and-answer session, including on whether a super PAC ad implied Mitt Romney played a role in the death of a steelworker’s wife.
“I don’t think Governor Romney was somehow responsible for the death of that woman,” said Obama, who quickly pivoted to say he didn’t approve that ad.
The call for Obama to answer questions from White House reporters follows a recent series of interviews he has given to such news outlets as People magazine, Entertainment Tonight and a local-radio station in which he talked about his favorite chili.
Obama is having a rough go of it.
Of course he can't make himself accessible to the WH press. He doesn't want to answer questions. He can't be transparent.
Obama has too much to hide.
He's spent months avoiding accountability, instead choosing to "Slow Jam the News" and yap with Nancy O'Dell.
The thing is Obama can avoid the press and stick to the entertainment circuit, but he can't avoid the reality of his record as president. We, the American people, live it every day, and it's not good.
So why are we focusing on the Missouri U.S. Senate race?
I know Republicans need to pick up every seat in the Senate that they can. The Claire McCaskill - Todd Akin race matters.
But let's not lose focus on what Obama has done to the American people and the damage he's done to the country and the issues that matter most in this election.
On FOX News Sunday yesterday, Chris Wallace did not go easy on Obama hack, Robert Gibbs.
Wallace called Gibbs on Obama's lack of transparency, his failure to release documents on Fast and Furious, and his failure to take questions from the press, holding only one news conference at the White House in 2012.
An Entertainment Tonight interview doesn't count as taking questions from the press. Local TV interviews aren't exactly tough. Nonetheless, Gibbs wants us to believe Obama has been accessible.
Gibbs brags that Obama took ONE question from the press, related to the shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin.
He sounds like a fool.
Gibbs was a terrible press secretary. He's a terrible campaign senior adviser.
And Obama has not kept his promise to the American people regarding transparency.
Kent and Josephine Terry, the parents of slain border patrol agent Brian Terry, are speaking out about their son's death.
In an interview with Sean Hannity, they say "that they think Attorney General Eric Holder and other Justice Department officials are 'hiding something' in their response to the botched anti-gunrunning operation Fast and Furious."
Terry's parents, Kent and Josephine Terry, said they are upset that the Obama administration may be preventing them from getting the full story about how their son died.
"They're lying. ... They're passing the buck," Kent Terry told Hannity. "I just know that they're hiding something big. Something happened out there."
The interview comes a day after the Terry's released a statement expressing disappointment with the Obama's administration's latest actions.
"Attorney General Eric Holder's refusal to fully disclose the documents associated with Operation Fast and Furious and President Obama's assertion of executive privilege serves to compound this tragedy. It denies the Terry family and the American people the truth," they said.
Q Jay, just one last question. The family of Brian Terry, the slain Border Patrol agent at whose murder scene at least two of these guns were found, they disagree with your characterization about these investigations. They say that the Attorney General’s refusal to fully disclose the documents associated with Fast and Furious and President Obama’s assertion of executive privilege serves to compound this tragedy. It denies the Terry family and the American people the truth. That’s a statement from the Terry family lawyer.
MR. CARNEY: Look, we absolutely agree with the need to find out the truth about why Fast and Furious happened, why the tactic that, again, was employed in the previous administration in different operations and was stopped by this Attorney General -- why it came about. And that’s why the Attorney General referred it to the Inspector General. That is why we have provided Congress every document that pertains to the operation itself that is at issue here when you talk about the family that you referred to. And --
Q The Terry family.
MR. CARNEY: The Terry family. And, and, uh....
Carney's inability to use the dead agent's name is inexcusable, especially since the reporter used it repeatedly in his question.
Furthermore, his spin, bringing up the "previous administration" rather than taking responsibility, is disgusting. Very, very sleazy.
President Obama on Wednesday invoked executive privilege to withhold from a Congressional oversight committee some documents and communications among his advisers regarding the failed gun enforcement operation known as “Fast and Furious,” in which weapons purchased in the United States were allowed to cross into Mexico.
It was the first time since Mr. Obama took office that he has asserted the privilege, and it sharpened considerably the long-festering dispute between Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. and Representative Darrell Issa of California, the Republican chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. The panel had been threatening to find Mr. Holder in contempt for refusing to hand over some documents.
Deputy Attorney General James Cole said in a letter to Mr. Issa that the president was claiming privilege over the documents, although he suggested that there might yet be a way to negotiate the release of some of the contested documents.
“We regret that we have arrived at this point, after the many steps we have taken to address the committee’s concerns and to accommodate the committee’s legitimate oversight interests regarding Operation Fast and Furious,” the Justice Department letter said. “Although we are deeply disappointed that the committee appears intent on proceeding with a contempt vote, the department remains willing to work with the committee to reach a mutually satisfactory resolution of the outstanding issues.”
But Mr. Issa said that the House had received no letter from Mr. Obama himself or a log specifying what was being withheld. He also raised doubts about whether executive privilege covered internal deliberative documents that did not relate to confidential communications involving the president himself.
“Our purpose has never been to hold the attorney general in contempt,” Mr. Issa said. “Our purpose has always been to get the information the committee needs to complete its work — that it is not only entitled to, but obligated to do.”
Well, well, well.
Remember back in 2008, when Obama said he was going to transform government? Everything was going to change. HE was going to govern with transparency.
Another broken promise. Obama didn't change Washington for the better, far from it.
As John Boehner points out, Obama can't claim executive privilege unless the White House is involved in Fast and Furious.
On the heels of President Obama's decision to shield Department of Justice documents under the doctrine of executive privilege, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner wondered if White House officials were being involved in a cover-up.
"Until now, everyone believed that the decisions regarding ‘Fast and Furious’ were confined to the Department of Justice," Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck said in a statement.
"The White House decision to invoke executive privilege implies that White House officials were either involved in the ‘Fast and Furious’ operation or the cover-up that followed. The Administration has always insisted that wasn't the case. Were they lying, or are they now bending the law to hide the truth?” Buck said.
Yeah, this is getting messy.
These cover-ups, the foot-dragging, never work. Stalling makes things worse. If you have nothing to hide, you usually don't hide it.
SEN. JOHN CORNYN: You violated the public trust in my view, by failing and refusing to perform the duties of your office. So, Mr. Attorney General, it’s more with sorrow than regret than anger that I would say that you leave me no alternative but join those that call upon you to resign your office. Americans deserve an Attorney General that will be honest with them; they deserve an Attorney General who will uphold the basic standards of political independence and accountability. You’ve proven time and time again, sadly, that you’re unwilling to do so.
The Daily Caller has identified the blogger offering $10,000 for Obama's college transcripts.
Brooks Bayne and friends set the bounty.
The Daily Caller has identified the owner of a website that promised on Tuesday to pay $10,000 to anyone who can provide an authentic copy of President Barack Obama’s course transcripts from his days at Occidental College, Harvard University or Columbia University.
Although its one-page website is presented anonymously, conservative blogger Brooks Bayne confirmed to The Daily Caller that he is responsible for it.
Bayne told TheDC that a group of eight people – including some he called “recognizable” figures – are coordinating the effort to make Obama’s college transcripts public, Bayne told The Daily Caller. He declined to name any of them.
“We are doing this because we are tired of the media not doing their job,” he said. ”We are tired of the PR propaganda coming out of places like Media Matters, and we are tired of this administration stonewalling over things like Fast and Furious.”
“We are tired of a lot of things.”
The $10,000 reward, he explained, is “absolutely” real and will be paid to anyone who can provide any verifiable college transcripts belonging to Obama.
I think this is great.
Obama, the self-proclaimed most transparent president ever, should release his college transcripts. And the Leftist media should quit giving him a pass, "Faster than you can say Furious."
Like Bayne and his cohorts, I'm tired of a lot of things, too.
It's time for Obama to be held accountable. It's time to hold the Leftist media accountable for doing such an awful job, shirking their duties as members of the press to become Obama political flunkies.
Shame on the Democrats for digging up a story about Mitt Romney and his dog from 30 years ago.
What is this? The next lame outrage? The Republicans' War on Dogs?
Let's get serious. This campaign is about the future of the country, our future.
Rather than talking about the economy and all the wonderful things Obama has done since taking office, the Leftists are yipping and yapping about a 1983 story.
That, of course, is because Obama has to run away from his Jimmy Carter-esque record as president.
Much has been made about Mitt Romney, in 1983, putting his family dog Seamus in a kennel on top of his roof and driving from Boston to Canada, with said canine Seamus making his displeasure known in a rather scatological way.
Democrats have signaled they have every intention of making sure the American people - especially dog-lovers - know the tale. In January, senior Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod tweeted a photo of the president and Bo in a car, with the snide observation: "@davidaxelrod: How loving owners transport their dogs."
Pathetic.
Is this really an issue critical to the lives of Americans struggling to find work and keep their homes?
Crazy.
Diane Sawyer, interviewing Mitt and Ann Romney, brought up the dog story.
DIANE SAWYER: As we move away from this primary campaign into the next phase-- again, on Yahoo, we got two questions most often, first about Seamus-- which as you know is out there forever-- would you do it again?
MITT ROMNEY: Certainly not with the attention it's received.
DIANE SAWYER: You said it was the most wounding thing in the campaign--
ANN ROMNEY: It's crazy.
DIANE SAWYER: --so far.
ANN ROMNEY: The dog loved it. The dog was, like--
DIANE SAWYER: But the dog got sick, right?
ANN ROMNEY: Once, he-- we traveled all the time and he-- he ate the turkey on the counter. I mean, he had the runs. But-- he would see that crate and, you know, he would, like, go crazy because he was going with us on vacation. It was to me a kinder thing to bring him along than to leave him in the kennel for t-- in-- in-- in a kennel for two weeks, so.
Ann Romney tried Monday to defuse lingering criticism of her husband’s decision to put their dog in a car-top carrier for a 12-hour drive to Canada, saying their Irish setter, Seamus, loved it and knew it meant he was going on vacation with the family.
“It was, to me, a kinder thing to bring him along than to leave him in the kennel for, in a kennel for two weeks,” Ann Romney told ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer during an interview with her husband at Fenway Park.
The episode has become something of a measuring stick for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s human compassion, with critics saying it showed heartlessness and supporters disputing that or saying it shows Romney’s problem-solving ability.
One Democrat has even promised a super PAC to raise money for ads to highlight the incident with Internet ads in 10 battleground states.
Asked if he do the same thing again, Mitt Romney said, “Certainly not with the attention it’s received.”
Ann Romney labeled the scrutiny, which stemmed from a 2007 Globe article detailing the 1983 incident, as “crazy.”
I agree with Ann. This is crazy.
Team Obama and his flock must be truly desperate if they have to focus on Seamus, the Romney's dog, to sway voters.
Is this really the best they've got?
What I love is that Romney's camp is fighting back, fast and furious.
(How many Americans know about Romney's dog but not Fast and Furious?)
Tapper writes:
The Romney campaign tonight signaled tonight that they are not about to cede any ground when it comes to a candidate's odd past with man's best friend.
The Daily Caller noted that in President Obama's best-selling memoir, "Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance," the president recalls being fed dog meat as a young boy in Indonesia with his stepfather, Lolo Soetoro.
"With Lolo, I learned how to eat small green chill peppers raw with dinner (plenty of rice), and, away from the dinner table, I was introduced to dog meat (tough), snake meat (tougher), and roasted grasshopper (crunchy)," the president wrote. "Like many Indonesians, Lolo followed a brand of Islam that could make room for the remnants of more ancient animist and Hindu faiths. He explained that a man took on the powers of whatever he ate: One day soon, he promised, he would bring home a piece of tiger meat for us to share."
...The discovery that the president had eaten dog meat prompted wise-cracks on twitter (hashtag - #ObamaDogRecipes) and this tweet from Romney strategist Eric Fehrstrom, who re-tweeted Axelrod's original message with a different take on the picture of the president and Bo.
"@EricFehrn: In hindsight, a chilling photo," he wrote.
Yes, I think Seamus was a much happier dog than the one/ones Obama ate.
“So what? It was a long time ago,” you say. “He was a lot younger. Customs are different there. He was just doing what his stepfather told him. And hey, you can’t even prove that the dogs were ever left on top of a car, you racist.”
Hey, whatever you have to tell yourself, libs. Say what you want about Romney, but at least he only put a dog on the roof of his car, not the roof of his mouth. And whenever you bring up the one, we’re going to bring up the other.
It’s no fun when we push back, is it? That’s why it’s so much fun.
Update: I know the Secret Service has a lot to deal with right now, but are they protecting Bo? From Obama, I mean.
Great line: "Say what you want about Romney, but at least he only put a dog on the roof of his car, not the roof of his mouth."
"And my job is to shut other white people down when they want to interrupt."
"We have to, at the DNC, provide training. We have to teach them how to communicate, how to be sensitive, and how to shut their mouths if they're white."

"[I]f you go back to the year 2000, when we had an obvious disaster and - and saw that our voting process needed refinement, and we did that in the America Votes Act and made sure that we could iron out those kinks, now you have the Republicans, who want to literally drag us all the way back to Jim Crow laws and literally - and very transparently - block access to the polls to voters who are more likely to vote Democratic candidates than Republican candidates. And it's nothing short of that blatant."

"The protesters have proven today that they‘re not going away. It was a pretty rough night last night. You can imagine if people said, well, we just can‘t fight the power. Instead, this morning, they came by tens, by hundreds, by thousands. By midday today, it was easily more than 10,000, perhaps as many as 15,000 people on the square here in Madison.
