Santorum: Obama and Romney

I think Rick Santorum may have sealed the deal for Mitt Romney yesterday.

Presidential candidate Rick Santorum on Thursday said Republicans should give President Barack Obama another term if Santorum isn't the GOP nominee and for a second day compared rival Mitt Romney to an Etch A Sketch toy.

Santorum reiterated an argument he has made before: The former Massachusetts governor is not conservative enough to offer voters a clear choice in the fall election and that only he can provide that contrast.

"You win by giving people a choice," Santorum said during a campaign stop in Texas. "You win by giving people the opportunity to see a different vision for our country, not someone who's just going to be a little different than the person in there."

Santorum added: "If they're going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk of what may be the Etch A Sketch candidate for the future."

Oh, my God.

If Rick Santorum truly believes that four more years of Obama is preferable to a Mitt Romney presidency, then he has lost me.

There is NO WAY that supporting Romney is a risk compared to the certainty of the catastrophe of another four years of Obama's failed policies and failed vision for the United States.

That statement was an enormous error on Santorum's part. It's a shocking thing for him to say.

I don't know what he was thinking.

Removing Obama from office is the goal. Period.

For Santorum to encourage Americans to stick with Obama if Romney wins the nomination is just crazy.

Romney would be a dramatic improvement over Obama.

If Santorum can't see that, I'm afraid his judgment is seriously impaired.

I won't support a candidate who doesn't understand the threat Obama poses.

I thought Santorum understood that. He used to be the guy focusing on Obama and stressing the importance of replacing him. That was until it became a two-person race.

I'll go with the Etch A Sketch.

Reed Grimm - American Idol

UPDATE, March 1, 2012: Grimm booted from "Idol"

Reed Grimm's journey on "American Idol" ended tonight.

America voted and said no to the jazz-scatting former University of Wisconsin-La Crosse student and lead singer of Three Beers Til Dubuque.

"He's real talented," said producer Jimmy Iovine, after watching his performance, "but he's way too kitschy for me. Way too cabaret. He's never going to make it on this show."

But the three judges —Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler — who loved him so much in previous rounds, stayed true and chose him as the last of six contestants to compete in the wild card round where three more people moved on.

He sang "Use Me" by Bill Withers. At song's end, Jackson told him, "You're one of the most different artists we've had try out for this show."

But maybe too different because the judges passed on him, ending his run on the show.

I wish the judges would have given him another chance.

Too bad.

Was there a Republican debate Wednesday night on CNN?

Yeah, there was.

I saw a bit of the debate replay. I suppose I'll check out the highlights, the must-see memorable moments, on the Internet later. Maybe.

Instead of watching Debate #20, we opted for American Idol. I missed most of the 2-hour show, but I did catch that Wisconsin's Reed Grimm has advanced to the Top 24.

Maybe Reed Grimm really is the next American Idol.

Once again, the judges of “American Idol” passed him along to the next level of competition, but not before gushing over him.

“That kid is so mad talented,” judge Randy Jackson said during Thursday night’s show.

“That’s the fun part of the day,” said Jennifer Lopez after watching Grimm do a little shuffle dance when he heard the good news.

The former University of Wisconsin-La Crosse student and lead singer of Three Beers Til Dubuque is breezing through the rounds of competition. The only criticism judges had for him Wednesday night was that he was too good a singer to spend his time scatting as he did at last week’s competition.

This is a nice story.

I like Reed.

I would rather vote for him than Romney or Santorum or Gingrich or Paul.

Ron Paul - Leave GOP?

Bill Kristol thinks Ron Paul doesn't belong in the Republican Party.

"I do not think he's a particularly good guy.... I think it would be better for the Republican party, if he left the Republican party."

I wonder if Ron Paul keeps ratcheting up his insanity to bait Republicans to call for him to jump the Republican ship, as Kristol does.

That would enable Paul to make a third party run without the charges of being a spoiler. He could claim he was forced out of the Republican party.

I think it's better for Paul to crash and burn as a Republican.

Ron Paul: Third Place (Video)

Ron Paul didn't take command of the Republican primary race in Iowa.

His ascendance to the top was exaggerated. His followers didn't deliver.

Ron Paul, speaking to supporters just now after finishing third in Iowa tonight, said there’s “nothing to be ashamed of” and urged his supporters to be ready for the next contests on the calendar.

“I think there’s nothing to be ashamed of, everything to be satisfied, and be ready and raring to move on to the next stop, which is New Hampshire,” the Texas congressman said.

He told the crowd that he had one of the tickets out of Iowa as “one of the top three vote getters.”

“We have a tremendous opportunity to continue this momentum,” Paul added.

I think Ron Paul has a lot to be ashamed of.

Not his third place finish in Iowa, but so much else.

Hopefully, Paul's downward momentum will continue.

Sarah Palin: Iowa Caucus

Sarah Palin gave her thoughts on the Republican field of candidates on the eve of the Iowa caucuses and other issues, too.

Speaking from Wasilla, Alaska, she spent nearly twenty minutes with Eric Bolling on FOX News Channel yesterday afternoon.

Palin didn't pull any punches.

When Bolling asked her what she thought of Newt Gingrich's suggestion that he might choose her to be a cabinet member or even pick her to be his VP running mate, Palin joked that proves he's not so smart.

There is no way she'd run for vice president in 2012. There's no way she's going to run for president in 2012. No way.

She said, "I'm happy with this field" and that she looks forward to supporting the winner.

Then, she said the field "is what it is." Not exactly a ringing endorsement of those running.

Palin opposes a third party candidacy, whether it be Ron Paul or Donald Trump, because it makes it more likely that Obama might be reelected.

"Heaven forbid that we have to go through four more years of Barack Obama and his failed socialist policies."

Palin says if Ron Paul is the Republican nominee, she'll "be there with him," hoping he'd have some smart people around him able to provide some better foreign policy ideas.

She refused to endorse any of the candidates, saying they all have strengths and weaknesses. There isn't a perfect candidate.

Palin doesn't believe Perry will drop out, but she thinks that Huntsman should drop out. She's not happy with Huntsman because he hasn't put out real effort. As for Michele Bachmann, Palin expects her to drop out soon, to avoid going into debt. Palin said, "She has a lot to offer also but I don't think it's her time this go around."

She makes a lot of sense.

Ron Paul and Jay Leno (Video)

Jay Leno gave his guest, "Dr. Ron Paul," three segments on Friday's Tonight Show.

The audience was packed with Ron Paul supporters. Every time Paul finished an answer to Leno's softball questions, the audience would erupt with applause. It was not effective because it was so staged.

Ron Paul really is a joke.

Still, Leno treated him with respect, which was appropriate. After all, the guy is a Republican candidate for president.

However, Leno didn't challenge any of Paul's responses, no follow-up questions.

There was time for one guest following Paul, Joe Rogan of NBC's Fear Factor. Rogan came out wearing a Ron Paul shirt, saying he was a huge fan.

The Debate, Sioux City

Did anything important happen during last night's Republican presidential primary debate?

I had it on, but I was writing out Christmas cards.

Occasionally, something on TV would draw my attention away from my task.

It might be Ron Paul's squeaky yapping or Newt Gingrich talking over the moderators that would distract me.

I'd look up now and then, and see Mitt Romney speaking, looking like he always does, very Romney-ish. What was he saying? I don't know.

Rick Perry seemed lost. The "Tim Tebow" line was stupid. In that brief moment, which was all I saw of him, he was trying too hard.

If Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum said much, I missed it. All I heard from Jon Huntsman were his closing remarks.

This debate received a lot of hype. It is the last one before Iowa, so I guess I should have watched it closely.

But I'm powerless. I'm not in Iowa or New Hampshire. Why bother?

All the pundits have been fighting it out. Who's the best candidate? Who can beat Obama? Who guarantees failure in November?

What does the Wall Street Journal say? National Review?

I feel like I'm on the sidelines and my vote won't matter. Others will decide.

I don't think that's the way it's supposed to work.

Here's the latest ad from Ron Paul's campaign, "Selling Access."

Newt Gingrich is the target.

The Ron Paul 2012 Presidential campaign announced today the release of its latest ad, 'Selling Access', another two-minute web video aimed at former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, calling him out as a corrupt Washington insider who got rich through influence-peddling.

The video, which the campaign plans to promote prominently on conservative web sites, includes a clip of Gingrich calling himself an 'insider' and another in which the former Speaker brags about getting paid $60,000-a-speech. The video comes after the viral success of Paul's earlier web ad, 'Serial Hypocrisy', which criticizes Gingrich for many of the same issues.

Herman Cain and Jay Leno (Video)

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain was Jay Leno's guest on Friday's Tonight Show.

Leno was not the jerk that he was when Michele Bachmann was on his show. Overall, he was much more pleasant and respectful.

During the interview, Leno asked Cain for his thoughts on the Republican candidates, sort of a lightning round.

Mark Levin: Ron Johnson, Russ Feingold, and a Monumental Opportunity

Yesterday, Ron Johnson appeared on Mark Levin's radio program again.

They discussed what's at stake in this election and what an incredible opportunity Wisconsin voters have to help get the country back on track.

Levin began the interview with this remark:

MARK LEVIN: There's a hugely important race, several hugely important races in Wisconsin, but one that I've been focusing on is for the Senate because I find Russ Feingold to be so radical and out of touch. And he's running against a citizen candidate, a terrific candidate - Ron Johnson.

Levin notes that Wisconsin voters have an opportunity to send a message to the entire country.

LEVIN: Now have I heard correctly that you guys have a chance of winning the governorship, too, or am I misplaced on that?

RON JOHNSON: We've got an extremely good chance of not only taking back the governorship, Mark, but also the state assembly and the state senate race. We could have an entire Republican sweep here if we get our voters out, if they stay engaged, and if they get to the polls. So, we've got a real shot here to totally turn the state of Wisconsin around.

LEVIN: Now that would be stunning, I mean, a stunning blow to the Left generally, a stunning blow to this administration, and a signal to the country and the whole world if Wisconsin moves to the Right. Because, you know, Feingold seems to have his finger in every Left-wing kook idea that comes across the table it seems to me, whether it's limiting free speech or promoting Cap and Trade, ObamaCare - he didn't think it went far enough but he wanted to vote for it.

It would be a stunning signal to the country and we have the power to deliver it.

We have to get to the polls and vote. It's such a simple act but it has such far-reaching consequences. It's crucial that we each do our part and participate in our democracy. We decide the direction of our country. Now's the time to act.

Levin closed the interview with Johnson by noting how badly the country needs him to win this election.

LEVIN: So we just want to tell you, Ron, we're really in your corner. We wish you all the best. We really do need you in Washington as well as we need Feingold to be defeated if we're going to turn things around. Thank you for dropping everything and running for the U.S. Senate, and God bless you, my friend.

JOHNSON: Well, we appreciate you, Mark, and appreciate everything you do because America is precious. We need to preserve it.

LEVIN: Amen. God bless you and good luck.

JOHNSON: Take care.

LEVIN: All right, folks, that's Ron Johnson. Literally came out of nowhere, I mean, politically. Successful businessman who said, 'You know what? I can't sit by an watch this anymore.' And took on a man, Russ Feingold, that everybody thought would be in the Senate forever, casting his wildly radical votes. Never met a tax he didn't vote for, a spending bill he didn't vote for, an entitlement. He just favors a massively bigger welfare state, you know, with no limits really.

He didn't think ObamaCare went far enough. That's not an independent. That's crazy.

And finally, he came up against an articulate candidate who has called him on all this and the people of Wisconsin have had enough.

You know what? We're all Americans. We know that way out of this is through the private sector. We know the way out of this is by streamlining and cutting and diminishing the size of government, and pulling it back within its constitutional boundaries. You don't keep punishing people, pushing them around, tormenting them, and yet, that's how Russ Feingold votes all the time.

Free speech, free speech - no, only for the neo-Nazis, only for the Klan, only for the New Black Panther Party, but not for people who want to contribute to a candidate. That we've gotta limit, right?

But we have a very good shot there in Wisconsin and we wish Ron Johnson the best. If you live in Wisconsin, please vote for crying out loud. This is a monumental opportunity to vote in somebody good and vote out somebody who's just too far out there. And if you know somebody in Wisconsin, call them.

Levin nails it when he ways that "this is a monumental opportunity to vote in somebody good and vote out somebody who's just too far out there."

We have to seize it.

Ron Paul May Quit

WASHINGTON -- GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul is hinting to supporters that he is ending his long-shot campaign for the presidency.

The Texas Republican congressman addressed supporters in a 7 1/2-minute video on his campaign Web site Thursday night and did not specifically say he was quitting the race.

He said that although victory in the conventional political sense is not available in the presidential race, many victories have been achieved due to the hard work and enthusiasm of his supporters.

He said that he hoped that one day he and his supporters could look back and say his campaign was a significant first step that signaled a change in direction for the country.

Paul said their job now was to plan for the next phase of their effort.

"Victory in the conventional political sense"?

Good grief.

On his video message, Paul said:

We must remember elections are short term efforts. Revolutions are long term projects. But even with the past year's achievements, we're still in the early stages of bringing about the changes that this revolution is all about. The most significant achievement of our months of dedicated efforts has been the degree to which the message of liberty has spread throughout the country, and in some ways, around the world.

What is Paul talking about? Revolution? I missed it.

I think Paul is trying to justify raking in millions of dollars from supporters.

He should quit screwing around. His plans to continue his revolution by keeping the meet-up groups meeting are bizarre. Give it up!

Paul ended his non-withdrawal withdrawal from the race with this:

Let me close by saying that we live in dangerous and exciting times. And with world events changing rapidly, our efforts are all that much more important.

An issue that I've been talking about for thirty years is now a key issue of the evening news-- that is the dollar crisis and its economic ramifications. The money issue gives our movement credibility and a chance to offer sound solutions. At the rate our economy is slipping, we will likely see the disintegration of the American empire, and that will be no small event.

Yeah, the disintegration of the American empire that Paul predicts will be no small event.

You know, this really has been a strange, strange primary season.

Desperate Jay Leno and Cult Leader Ron Paul

Due to the writers' strike, Jay Leno is having trouble booking guests. The glitterati don't want to cross the picket line.

Enter Ron Paul.

The last time Paul was a guest on The Tonight Show was October 30, 2007.

He had a brief segment, sandwiched between Tom Cruise and the Sex Pistols.

This time, Leno allowed Paul to blather on and on -- the same old, same old.

The audience was packed with Paul followers, cheering his every word. Wow, I didn't see that coming.

Paul's tired lines aren't worth chronicling here.

Two things of very slight interest:

---Paul said that among the Democrat candidates that he likes most is Dennis Kucinich. He said Kucinich is closest to him when it comes to sharing similar views. The audience roared its approval.

Paul said, "He understands civil liberties. He understands a lot about foreign policy."

Yes, and Kucinich also understands UFOs.

I wonder if the Paulites will condemn their leader for crossing the picket line.

I can't back that up. I don't really wonder about that. Of course, they won't. They'll probably go online and raise a million dollars in honor of Paul's late night appearance.

2.) Leno slammed FOX News for not including Paul in the debate on Sunday night. He said, "Well, thanks for coming. I just wanted to clear up that thing. I thought it was blatantly unfair and thanks for coming by."

Good grief, Leno is desperate.
