Hillsborough police said somebody threw a bottle of flammable liquid through the window of Orange County’s GOP headquarters, setting campaign signs, supplies and furniture ablaze before burning itself out.

A swastika and “Nazi Republicans get out of town or else” were spray painted on the side of an adjacent building. No damage estimates were available.

“The firebombing of a local political headquarters in Orange County is clearly an attack on our democracy,” [Gov. Pat] McCrory said in a statement. “Violence has no place in our society – but especially in our elections. … I will use every resource as governor to assist local authorities in this investigation.”

Hillsborough Mayor Tom Stevens said, “This highly disturbing act goes far beyond vandalizing property; it willfully threatens our community’s safety … and its hateful message undermines decency, respect and integrity in civic participation.”

...“The office itself is a total loss,” [Dallas Woodhouse, executive director of the state GOP,] said. “The only thing important to us is that nobody was killed, and they very well could have been.”

Later, Woodhouse said, “Whether you are Republican, Democrat or Independent, all Americans should be outraged by this hate-filled and violent attack against our democracy. … Everyone in this country should be free to express their political viewpoints without fear for their own safety.”

The flaming bottle, which Woodhouse described as a significant Molotov cocktail, and bomb, was thrown through a window that bore the words “Freedom spoken here.”

“This is a horrific, horrific act of political terrorism, one that we will not succumb to and one that we will answer,” he said. “When people try to stifle freedom of speech and freedom of assembly, you must come back with more speech and aggressively defend your rights.”

Woodhouse also mentioned the graffiti that said “Nazi Republicans leave town or else.”

“Or else what? That is what we all wonder, or else what,” he said. “Because we’re not going anywhere.”

UPDATE: Madison cancels meet and greet with domestic terrorist Ayers

Like a Taliban speed dating luncheon, a scheduled meet-and-greet in Madison for domestic terrorist Bill Ayers has been cancelled due to lack of demand.

A staffer at the Madison Public Library Foundation, which had scheduled the event, told Wisconsin Reporter they “didn’t have the kind of interest” they thought they’d get, so they nixed the hour long event.

...Fans of Ayers or pathology can still come out and see the co-founder of the Weather Underground, a group of communist revolutionaries that bombed the New York City Police Headquarters, the U.S. Capitol and the Pentagon in the 1970s in protest of the Vietnam War.

He will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday night at the Overture Center in downtown Madison to plug his new book “Public Enemy.” That speech is free and open to the public.

Among the "respected reformer" Ayers' accomplishments is being a founding member of the radical, violent Leftist group the Weathermen, later called the Weather Underground Organization.

Terrorist Bill Ayers does not apologize for his efforts to overthrow the U.S. government via violent means. However, he does regret he didn't cause more destruction and damage to the country.

Ayers, allegedly an expert on educating our children, was an author of Prairie Fire.

The manifesto states:

Ayers has never apologized for any of this.

This "respected reformer" will be in Madison today, the keynote speaker at the Wisconsin Book Festival.

Ayers is flogging his book, aptly titled "Public Enemy, Confessions of an American Dissident," Thursday at 5:30 in the Madison Room of the Downtown Public Library. But you have to pay $25 for the privilege, which also gets you a place for his 7 p.m. keynote speech at the Capitol Theater in the Overture Center.

...Here is how the Madison Book Festival is publicizing this criminal: "In the face of defamation by conservative media, including a multimillion-dollar campaign aimed solely at demonizing Ayers, and in spite of frequent death threats, Bill and Bernardine stay true to their core beliefs in the power of protest, demonstration, and deep commitment. Ayers reveals how he has navigated the challenges and triumphs of this public life with steadfastness and a dash of good humor—from the red carpet at the Oscars, to prison vigils and airports."

The Ayers pick is the work of new Book Festival Event coordinator Conor Patrick Moran, who was named to the job earlier this year by Madison Public Library director Greg Mickells. The library sponsors the book festival.

According to its website, "Library organizers envision a [book] festival that incorporates literature, spoken word, art, and performance, and in which local literary artists mix with nationally-acclaimed authors to create a unique event full of free community programs in keeping with Madison Public Library's mission to celebrate ideas, promote creativity, connect people and enrich lives."

Absolutely nauseating.

...Ayers said his new book is ultimately about “teaching and parenting” and living a life that “doesn’t make a mockery of your values.” He urged his audience to “try to be good citizens, try to be moral people,” according to The College Fix.

I don't know who is more screwed up, Ayers or his admirers.

John Murtagh has an interesting take on Ayers and his be "good citizens" and "moral people" crap.

[Bill Ayers'] comments were cruelly ironic to John Murtagh, who as a 9-year-old boy saw his family targeted because his father was presiding over the trial of members of the Black Panther Party. Murtagh blames the Weather Underground for setting three gasoline-filled firebombs outside his boyhood home while the family slept.

The bombs managed to only damage the car and destroy a snowman the little boy had built a few days earlier, but Murtagh, now an attorney, said the Weather Underground’s intentions were to kill, whether they succeeded or not.

“Bill Ayers just never quits,” Murtagh, now a successful attorney, told FoxNews.com. “He clearly has skewed the view of morality. There’s nothing wrong with being politically active. To try to change the culture and make society better. It’s another to set out and try to kill people.”

Murtagh adds that Ayers has been living in a state of denial for decades about the actions of the Weather Underground.

“For him to go on for 40 years with a straight face that they were only looking to cause property damage is false. The fact of the matter is they tried to hurt people. They did not like what my father stood for. They didn’t like what he tried to do, so they sought out to kill a 9-year-old boy and his family.”

It's sick that Ayers is profiting from his status as an "American dissident."

He's a terrorist and proud of it.

There's nothing good or moral about that.

Phony Scandals and Obama

Last Thursday, Obama had the audacity to whine about the flurry of "phony scandals" plaguing his administration.

We’ve got to stop with the short-term thinking. We’ve got to stop with the outdated debates. That's not what the moment requires.

This is one of the most disrespectful, irresponsible things Obama has ever said as president.

I respect the office of the American presidency. However, with Obama as president, that's getting harder for me to do.

This loser should never have won a second term. I'm not mad at his army of dependents and freeloaders for voting for him. I'm mad at the people who knew better and sat out the election anyway. Instead of being on the road to turning the country around, we're still floundering, drowning in Obama's Leftist policies and selfish, disgraceful behavior.

Sikh Temple Shooting (Video)

Disbelief.

It's unreal that the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek was the site of a mass shooting.

This sort of thing doesn't happen here, not on Howell Avenue, not across from Classic Lanes.

A mass murderer doesn't live in Cudahy.

It's shocking. It's terrifying. It's heartbreaking.

Seven people, including a gunman, were killed in a shooting at a Sikh temple near Milwaukee Sunday in what police say is being treated as an act of domestic terrorism.

Authorities including the FBI, the ATF, the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department and Cudahy police are now searching a house in Cudahy, Wis., believed to be linked to the suspect, WITI's Brandon Cruz reports.

A source close to the case told Fox News that the suspect is a white male in his 40s who is a former military member.

Prior to starting the search at the 3700 block of Holmes Ave., police asked two blocks of residents to leave the area or remain indoors. FBI agents are there with an armored truck, a trailer and other vehicles. Other law enforcement officers are there too, along with a police dog.

...At a news conference late Sunday afternoon, Edwards released no information about the suspect, including his identity or a possible motive.

But at the scene of the home search, Kurt Weins, a Cudahy resident, told the Journal Sentinel he rented out the upper flat of the duplex to a man in his 40s.

"I had him checked out and he definitely checked out," Weins told the newspaper. "The cops told me they don't want me to say nothing right now."

Authorities were using a bucket truck to peek into the windows of the property Sunday evening.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting some details about the shooter.

Tattoos on the body of the slain Sikh temple gunman and certain biographical details led the FBI to treat the attack at a Milwaukee-area temple as an act of domestic terrorism, officials said Sunday.

The shootings in Oak Creek, Wis., left seven dead, including the gunman, and three critically wounded. One of the injured was a police officer who was expected to survive.

A federal official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media refused to say whether the gunman was thought to belong to a hate group or some other violent group because the investigation was still unfolding.

...Federal officials cautioned against thinking that a concrete link to a domestic terrorism group or hate group had been established.

“The investigation will have to continue to see and determine the motive,” said a federal law enforcement official who had been briefed on the early planning for the case. “We don’t know much about the motive at this point.”

Oak Creek police declined to identify the gunman or outline a possible motive.

The designation of “domestic terrorism” under the FBI’s rubric — which was not applied to the Aurora, Colo., theater shooting — implies a political agenda. The FBI defines terrorism as “the unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.”

So the carnage at the movie theater in Aurora was different from the bloodshed at the Sikh Temple.

The shooter in Oak Creek was a domestic terrorist.

The shooter in Aurora was not.

I think when an individual chooses to go into a public place and gun down as many people as possible it's terror.

I understand the political objective element and the significance. Bill Ayers, for example, is a proud domestic terrorist.

But the loss of life from the violence, the pain and the fear that accompany the senseless killing, are indistinguishable.

During an interview heard by attendees of the convention, Nugent told Republican attendees to rally thousands of votes for Romney and then "ride into that battlefield and chop [Democrats'] heads off in November," and then compared the Obama administration to couch-peeing coyotes who must be shot.

Yeah, that's not good; but at least Nugent didn't say they never worked a day in their lives.

Nugent is not representing Romney. He backs Romney, but it's not like Nugent is a close adviser.

Is Romney responsible for the crap his millions of supporters say?

Are Obama's supporters held to the same standard? I doubt the Dems would say Michelle Williams represents Obama.

He also accused President Obama of "wiping his ass with the constitution," and dismissed the entire executive branch as criminals.

Now, the Secret Service is said to be looking in to Nugent's threats.

The Romney campaign, meantime, attempted to distance itself from Nugent on Tuesday, undoubtedly regretting the former Massachusetts governor's comments last month to a Missouri radio show: "It's been fun getting to know Ted Nugent."

"Divisive language is offensive no matter what side of the political aisle it comes from," Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said in an email to reporters. "Mitt Romney believes everyone needs to be civil."

The Democratic National Committee called on Romney to strongly condemn the remarks by Nugent, best known for his late '70s hit "Cat Scratch Fever."

"Threatening violence — or whatever it is that Nugent's threatening — is clearly beyond the pale, but Nugent's not the one running for president," said DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

At the daily White House press briefing on Tuesday, spokesman Jay Carney wouldn't comment on Nugent's remarks.

"We can't be policing the statement of supporters across the board. The president is focused on the issues," he said.

Nugent, however, was unapologetic, telling conservative radio host Dana Loesch that his incendiary remarks were "100 per cent positive."

"I will stand by my speech," he said, and then upped the ante by heaping more scorn on Democrats, describing Wasserman Schultz as a "brain-dead, soulless, heartless idiot."

Nancy Pelosi, minority leader for the House of Representatives, he added, is a "sub-human scoundrel."

Wow.

The Democrats are calling names as well.

Wasserman Schultz and Pelosi aren't exactly responding with civility.

What's interesting is how the press is making seem that Romney and Nugent are best buddies.

I am certain Romney would not have signed off on Nugent's remarks.

One minute, Romney is being called wooden and unable to relate. The next, Romney is depicted as a wild man, under the influence of "Cat Scratch Fever."

There is such a double standard.

I don't hear Obama denouncing the New Black Panthers. Has Obama ever denounced their million dollar bounty on George Zimmerman?

Obama did his best to avoid commenting on Hilary Rosen's assinine remarks about Ann Romney, and Rosen is, in fact, an Obama surrogate.

Nugent is not a Romney surrogate. Endorsing a candidate doesn't qualify one as a surrogate.

Moreover, Democrats still insist it was wrong for Obama to answer for the remarks of his mentor and father figure, Rev. Jeremiah Wright. They demand that Obama's close ties with Bill Ayers are a non-issue.

Yet we're supposed to expect Romney to apologize for Nugent?

Give me a break.

Jose Pimentel

According to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Jose Pimentel was a "lone wolf."

Is that supposed to reassure the public?

A Manhattan man who became fascinated by the American-born Muslim militant Anwar al-Awlaki was arrested on charges of plotting to build and detonate bombs in New York, city officials announced on Sunday night.

At a hastily called City Hall news conference, Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, who appeared alongside Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the Manhattan district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., said the man, Jose Pimentel, 27, had begun in August to plot a bomb attack. But it was the death of Mr. Awlaki, who was killed in a drone strike in Yemen in September, that “jacked up his speed, so to speak.”

Mr. Kelly said that Mr. Pimentel, a convert to Islam who was also known as Muhammad Yusuf, had been under police surveillance for more than two years and was arrested on Saturday after he had come close to completing at least three bombs.

Holes had been drilled into the pipes, sulfur had been scraped off matches, nails were ready to be used as shrapnel, and wires were used to fashion an ignition device, according to a law enforcement official.

Mr. Pimentel planned to test his abilities by detonating mailboxes, before embarking on a bombing campaign around New York City, Mr. Kelly said.

Mr. Kelly added: “Pimentel talked about killing U.S. military personnel returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan, particularly Marines and Army personnel. He talked about bombing post offices in and around Washington Heights and police cars in New York City, as well as a police station in Bayonne, N.J.”

“Once his bombing campaign began, Mr. Pimentel said the public would know that there were muhajideen in the city to fight jihad here,” Mr. Kelly said.

Mr. Bloomberg and Mr. Kelly said, however, that Mr. Pimentel as was not part of a conspiracy, had no known contacts abroad and, in the mayor’s words, “appears to be a total lone wolf.”

So Pimentel has been under police surveillance for more than two years.

I guess those Bush era policies that Obama decided to keep in place are still paying off.

Pimentel planned to target government buildings and police officers with bombs, also military personnel.

He sounds a lot like Bill Ayers.

Pimentel also seems to share the disdain for the police and the military exhibited by the Occupy protesters.

Although Pimentel and radicals like Ayers and the Occupiers have different motives, their goal is the same as extremists - war on the United States, bringing down the country, destruction.

Herman Cain's Character: Michigan Debate

The audience at last night's Republican presidential debate didn't want to hear about the Herman Cain sexual harassment allegations.

When questions were raised about the matter, the audience booed.

There's no confusion or controversy. They didn't boo a gay soldier. They booed the media, and they deserved it.

These Leftist members of the media didn't think character mattered when Bill Clinton was running for president, or having sex in the Oval Office, or lying under oath.

Now, John McAdams points out that the Marquette Educational Policy and Leadership program of the University's College of Education also was an official sponsor of the Rethinking Schools celebration that highlighted that most venerated educator Bill Ayers.

I'm confused about Marquette's alleged Catholic identity.

As a Catholic institution, how can it support an event associated with Bill Ayers and an agenda that is against school choice?

Among the respected reformer Ayers' "accomplishments" is being a founding member of the radical, violent Leftist group the Weathermen, later called the Weather Underground Organization.

Terrorist Bill Ayers does not apologize for his efforts to overthrow the U.S. government via violent means. However, he does regret he didn't cause more destruction and damage to the country.

Ayers, the expert on educating our children, was an author of Prairie Fire.

The manifesto states:

Ayers is a hardcore militant. He can't divorce himself from that.

Apparently, Marquette's Ellen Eckman, Chair of Educational Policy and Leadership, didn't have a problem with giving $250 to sponsor an event that highlighted and honored Ayers.

The Marquette Education College as a whole did not support the event, but rather only the Educational Policy and Leadership program. Education College Dean William Henk disclaimed any knowledge of the sponsorship, but noted that a particular department or program might have sponsored the event.

Ellen Eckman, Chair of Educational Policy and Leadership, confirmed that her department had ponied up the $250 for the sponsorship.

Eckman, asked whether she was put off by the fact that Ayers is an unrepentant former terrorist, replied that “I see him as an educational professor dealing with reform.” She added “We use a tremendous amount of Rethinking Schools materials. . . .”

Asked whether she saw their agenda as hostile to choice schools or private schools or Catholic parochial schools, Eckman said she didn’t see this as being the case, and that they are “interested in creating really good thoughtful teachers.”

...So it seems we have Marquette’s College of Education contributing not merely to an organization that honors an unrepentant terrorist, but one that opposes any competition with government-run schools, including that from Catholic schools.

Welcome to our “Catholic university.”

Eckman said “we’re in there with Mt. Mary and Alverno . . . they sponsored them too.”

What a lame response!

Eckman doesn't focus on the terrorism. She compartmentalizes that and focuses on Ayers' credentials in education, which includes active opposition to school choice programs.

This is extremely disturbing to me.

Marquette, as part of its Catholic foundation, should be an advocate for choice schools in its mission of social justice by providing children with a quality education.

Marquette looks the other way when it comes to Ayers but it boldly supports an organization and former terrorist on offense when it comes to blocking choice schools.

John McAdams concludes:

So as is typical at places like Marquette, if there is a conflict between a Catholic perspective, and secular political correctness, secular political correctness wins.

I have a BIG problem with Marquette's connection to this event.

It runs counter to its alleged mission as a Catholic university.

Clearly, Ayers is not like the hundreds of thousands of Americans who participated in the civil rights and anti-war movements of the 1960s, not even close. It's a lie to suggest that his participation in protests was remotely similar to that of hundreds of thousands of Americans. It's a flat-out lie.

Ayers actively sought to overthrow the government of the United States. He was at war with our country.

Here's some suggested reading for those in Alverno's School of Education: Prairie Fire.

It has a red cover. Nice touch. It reminds me of Mao's Little Red Book. The title, Prairie Fire, is all Mao, too. Mao wrote, "A Single Spark Can Start a Prairie Fire," on January 5, 1930.

Sisters and brothers,

Here is PRAIRIE FIRE, our political ideology - a strategy for anti-imperialism and revolution inside the imperial US. It comes out of our own practice of the last five years and reflects a diversity of experiences. This paper is not the product of one or two people, nor even a small handful of us. Rather PRAIRIE FIRE represents the politics and collective efforts of an organization. It has been the focus of our study groups and our political education. It has been chewed on and shaped in countless conversations, struggles and written pages. It has travelled around the country, growing, developing thru the attempt to understand the shape of world forces and the revolutionary possibilities before us. The paper was rewritten four times and collectively adopted as the political statement of the Weather Underground. The twelve-month process of writing PRAIRIE FIRE, squeezed between on-going work and practice and action, has now reached a kind of end-point. A cycle is done.

We undertook this analysis to explain the changes in US and world conditions since the Vietnam ceasefire and to evaluate the consequences of the Vietnamese victory. We have come some distance in evaluating the political situation, the priorities for revolutionary work since we began this writing. Now many more revolutionaries will need to shape and change the paper. The politics cannot be realized unless and until the content of the program is activated in thousands of situations, among thousands of people in the coming period. PRAIRIE FIRE will be a growing thing.

We hope the paper opens a dialectic among those in the mass and clandestine movements; we hope people will take PRAIRIE FIRE as seriously as we do, study the content and write and publish their views of the paper as well as their analysis of their own practice. We will respond as best we can.

Our movement urgently needs a concrete analysis of the particular conditions of our time and place. We need strategy. We need to battle for a correct ideology and win people over. In this way we create the conditions for the development of a successful revolutionary movement and party. We need a revolutionary communist party in order to lead the struggle, give coherence and direction to the fight, seize power and build the new society. Getting from here to there is a process of coming together in a disciplined way around ideology and strategy, developing an analysis of our real conditions, mobilizing a base among the US people, building principled relationships to Third World struggle, and accumulating practice in struggle against US imperialism.

PRAIRIE FIRE is written to communist-minded revolutionaries, independent organizers and anti-imperialists; those who carry the traditions and lessons of the struggles of the last decade, those who join in the struggles of today. PRAIRIE FIRE is written to all sisters and brothers who are engaged in armed struggle against the enemy. It is written to prisoners, women's groups, collectives, study groups, workers' organizing committees, communes, GI organizers, consciousness-raising groups, veterans, community groups and revolutionaries of all kinds; to all who will read, criticize and bring its content to life in practice. It is written as an argument against those who oppose action and hold back the struggle.

PRAIRIE FIRE is based on a belief that the duty of a revolutionary is to make the revolution. This is not an abstraction. BILL AYERS: The Weather Underground, indeed, did take responsibility for a handful, maybe a dozen, you know, extreme acts of vandalism. That's true. That's true.

And so compared to what was going on everyday in Vietnam, including the illegal bombing of cities, which John McCain took part in, and he is, of course, a war criminal, as is everyone.

As several people admitted when they came back, including the Vietnam Vets Against the War, war crimes were not a matter of choice. They were a matter of policy - bombing vast stretches of countryside because you had extra ordnance. That's what John McCain did. So he actually killed people. I actually didn't kill people.

Who's the, who's the one who should account for themselves?

Obviously, Ayers doesn't respect the veterans of the Vietnam War. He considers those Americans to be guilty of war crimes.

His efforts to overthrow the U.S. government were just acts of vandalism. He minimizes his role in plotting against America and organizing violence.

How can this "armed struggle" be deemed a legal war?

It's a disgrace that he paints John McCain and Vietnam vets as war criminals while considering himself to be just a vandal.

I wonder if Obama, in his heart, thinks like Ayers. I wonder if Obama agrees that John McCain and Vietnam veterans are war criminals.

We know Obama thinks Iraq is a "dumb war." Does he think Vietnam was a "dumb war," too?

We know that John Kerry, speaking on behalf of Vietnam Vets Against the War, told of war crimes committed in Vietnam.

It's so odd that Kerry wants to be considered a war hero, yet he sounded like Ayers when he testified before the Senate Committee of Foreign Relations in 1971.

According to Ayers, if you served in Vietnam, you're a war criminal. You committed atrocities in an illegal war.

He despises John McCain and Vietnam vets. He doesn't dance around the issue. He voices his anti-Americanism without hesitation.

UPDATE, March 30, 2011: Voucher testing data takes a new twist: Voucher, MPS kids on par, study finds

A day after the release of state test scores showed voucher-school students in Milwaukee achieving lower levels of reading and math proficiency than students in Milwaukee Public Schools, new data from researchers studying the voucher program's results over multiple years shows those students are doing about the same as MPS students, not worse.

The contradictory report is part of the latest installment of data from a group of researchers at the University of Arkansas who have been tracking a sample of Milwaukee voucher students matched to a set of MPS peers since 2005-'06.

After looking at achievement results on state tests over three years for those matched samples of students, the researchers' data continues to show little difference in academic achievement between both sectors in 2009.

...Patrick J. Wolf, the lead researcher on the latest voucher-school study results, said the type of studies he's involved in don't always produce clear answers because they can be like Rorschach tests: People see different arguments in the same basic set of facts

"If voucher school students aren't doing dramatically better than public school students, some people view the program as a failure," Wolf said. "But some people can look at the same results and say that's success, you've expanded choice and opportunity and there's no harm caused by it.

"Then you look at finances, and the fact that vouchers cost less than half the amount of money spent per student in public schools (in Milwaukee)."

Summary of findings

According to the fourth-year results of the five-year voucher school evaluation, Wolf and other researchers found:

• No meaningful differences over three years in student achievement growth in either math or reading between a matched set of voucher and MPS students. The first year was used as a baseline for student test scores.

• A sample of ninth-graders in the voucher program had slightly higher rates of graduation and enrollment in a four-year college than at matched sample of MPS ninth-graders. Some of the attainment benefit in voucher schools appears to be due to family background, such as mothers with higher levels of education.

• Independent charter schools in Milwaukee - public schools that are nonunion and authorized to operate by non-MPS entities - outperformed MPS students in both reading and math after three years, after controlling for baseline achievement and other student characteristics.

It comes just as the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reveals test results for students in Milwaukee's school choice program.

Students in Milwaukee's school choice program performed worse than or about the same as students in Milwaukee Public Schools in math and reading on the latest statewide test, according to results released Tuesday that provided the first apples-to-apples achievement comparison between public and individual voucher schools.

The scores released by the state Department of Public Instruction cast a shadow on the overall quality of the 21-year-old Milwaukee Parental Choice Program, which was intended to improve results for poor city children in failing public schools by allowing them to attend higher-performing private schools with publicly funded vouchers. The scores also raise concerns about Gov. Scott Walker's proposal to roll back the mandate that voucher schools participate in the current state test.

Voucher-school advocates counter that legislation that required administration of the state test should have been applied only once the new version of the test that's in the works was rolled out. They also say that the latest test scores are an incomplete measure of voucher-school performance because they don't show the progress those schools are making with a difficult population of students over time.

...The big news for those plugged into the education world, however, was the choice vs. public school results in Milwaukee. MPS results overall showed 59% of students scoring proficient or better in reading, while 47.8% of students scored proficient or better in math.

In the voucher program, 55.2% of students scored proficient or better in reading while 34.4% of students scored proficient or better in math.

The percentage of low-income students in MPS proficient or better in reading - 55.3% - was about the same as the voucher program, which currently serves only low-income students.

It's unfortunate that some will likely use these numbers to try to strip parents of their right to choose what's best for their kids.

The numbers don't offer a complete picture of students' progress. They are an inadequate measure of results, a snapshot without context. There's no measure of specific students' performance in MPS compared to their performance in the school choice program. If the skills of individual children have improved, that's success. What would be their level of achievement if they attended MPS?

The test results don't provide that information.

Another issue is the sample--

The group of voucher students tested is dramatically smaller than the number of MPS students tested, potentially impacting the results.

The performance of each voucher student is given greater weight than each MPS student when it comes to arriving at the percentages of academic achievement.

In sum, these latest test results don't necessarily tell the whole story.

The JSOnline headline for the article, while factually accurate, is incomplete and, therefore, misleading.



I remain staunchly pro-choice when it comes to education.

It seems odd that many of the same teacher union members complaining about losing their rights are in favor of limiting or taking away parents' right to choose.

Bill Ayers, Obama's Book

Last Thursday, Bill Ayers, radical unrepentant terrorist, was yapping at Montclair State University.

When asked his opinion of Obama's book, Dreams From My Father, Ayers offered more than a critique. He said that he wrote it.

Although Ayers was being sarcastic when he called for help to prove he wrote the book, and he joked about getting his share of the royalties, Ayers had to know that bringing up the controversy at all was not something that would help Obama.

Jack Cashill of American Thinker writes, "Ayers does not like the application of force in Libya, and this may have been his own way of retaliating."

That was my reaction when I watched the video. Ayers seems ticked off and looking to hurt Obama.

To be clear, I do not think that in the above video Ayers declares he is the author of Obama's book. I said "Ayers was being sarcastic" and "he joked about getting his share of the royalties."

I do think that Ayers enjoys tweaking Obama. Ayers has stated his past disappointment with Obama and I believe he's not pleased with Obama's handling of Libya.

Jared Loughner: 'Let the Bodies Hit the Floor'

Time for finger-pointing and playing the blame game.

Who's responsible?

The New York Times and the father of shooting victim Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords point to the Tea Party.

The Times cites Sarah Palin's website as contributing to the violence.

During last spring’s health care votes, the language used against some lawmakers was ratcheted up again, with protesters outside the House hurling insults and slurs. The offices of some Democrats, including Ms. Giffords’s in Tucson, were vandalized.

Ms. Giffords was also among a group of Democratic House candidates featured on the Web site of Sarah Palin’s political action committee with cross hairs over their districts, a fact that disturbed Ms. Giffords at the time.

“We’re on Sarah Palin’s targeted list,” Ms. Giffords said last March. “But the thing is the way that she has it depicted has the cross hairs of a gun sight over our district. When people do that, they’ve got to realize there’s consequences to that.”

The image is no longer on the Web site, and Ms. Palin posted a statement saying “my sincere condolences are offered to the family of Representative Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today’s tragic shooting in Arizona. On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice.” (Late Saturday, the map was still on Ms. Palin’s Facebook page.)

Democrats have also pointed out cases where Republican candidates seemed to raise the prospect of armed revolt if Washington did not change its ways.

This is awful, but I knew it would happen. I knew some Leftists would exploit this horrific crime to achieve their political ends.

Blame the Tea Party. Blame Sarah Palin. Blame the rhetoric of the Right and conservative talk radio. Blame Republicans.

That's so sleazy. It's disgusting.

Suggesting that the Tea Party and conservatives serve as advocates for such violence and bear some responsibility for Jared Loughner's deranged behavior is shameful.

All decent, caring, respectable people condemn Loughner's murder spree and pray for the victims and their families.

It should be a given that all Americans would join together in grief for the dead and wounded. Everyone should feel outrage over the shootings.

It's wrong to blame Sarah Palin and the Tea Party. It would be just as wrong if I were to blame Leftists. Reportedly, Loughner was a liberal.

“As I knew him he was left wing, quite liberal. & oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy,” the former classmate, Caitie Parker, wrote in a series of Twitter feeds Saturday. “I haven’t seen him since ’07 though. He became very reclusive.”

“He was a political radical & met Giffords once before in ’07, asked her a question & he told me she was ‘stupid & unintelligent,’ ” she wrote.

I wouldn't say that the years and years of Left-wing vitriol and the irresponsible statements of elected Democrats are responsible for Loughner's actions.

I don't blame the radical Leftists and their use of extreme rhetoric and violent, bloody imagery.

I don't hold Obama responsible for the shootings because he said inflammatory things like "We're gonna PUNISH OUR ENEMIES," or "I want you to argue with them and get in their face," or "If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun."

I don't blame the Democratic Party of Wisconsin for Loughner's violence because it distributed a bumper sticker showing what appears to be blood spurting from Republican Governor Scott Walker's head.

I don't blame terrorists like Bill Ayers or murderers like Karl and Dwight Armstrong.

I don't blame anarchists.

I don't blame atheists.

I don't blame American flag-burners.

I don't blame the music of Drowning Pool.

I blame Jared Lee Loughner for committing murder - for killing 6 people and wounding 13 others, including a 9-year-old girl, Christina Green, a third grader.

The Pima County Sheriff's Office says 9-year-old Christina Green died in the attack that wounded Giffords and 12 others.

Christina was born on 9/11 and featured in the book "9/11: Faces of Hope." She reportedly attended Mesa Verde Elementary School.

The father of a classmate says she studied ballet and played baseball and was just elected to her third grade student council.

"Outgoing, intelligent girl. She's on student council, usually kids on the student council have some good things going for them," said Jason Matsuzawa.

She had apparently gone to the event with her uncle to meet Giffords.

Loughner is an assassin. He's evil. I'm confident justice will be done.

I pray for the dead and the wounded and the survivors.
