Gabrielle Giffords Resigns (Video)

In the conclusion to an emotional ceremony in the House of Representatives Wednesday morning, a close friend and colleague of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), took to the podium to read the text of Giffords’ letter of resignation submitted to Congress this past weekend. Wasserman Schultz couldn’t hold back tears as she read the letter, which thanked friends, colleagues and constituents for their prayers and loyalty.

“Thank you for your faith in my ability to be your voice,” it read. “Even as we are set back by tragedy or profound disagreement, in the end we come together as Americans to set a course towards greatness. Every day I am working hard. I will recover and I will return, and we will work together again for Arizona and for all Americans.”

Giffords was then escorted by Wasserman Schultz up to the podium of House Speaker John Boehner, who embraced the congresswoman as he accepted her resignation letter. Boehner then tearfully held Giffords’ hand and raised it to Congress, who, with husband Mark Kelly and her mother in attendance, were all on their feet in a standing ovation.

What a moving moment!

Just one year after being shot in an assassination attempt, it is truly remarkable that Gabby Giffords was able to return to the U.S. House of Representatives and personally hand her letter of resignation to the Speaker of the House.

It's a triumph over the horrific violence that took place on that January Saturday in Tucson.

I prefer to focus on that victory rather than allow the anger I feel about the shootings to take over.

When I see Gabby Giffords, I'm inspired by her beautiful spirit and incredible determination. But I'm also heartbroken that the massacre occurred.

Her recovery has been miraculous. I know how hard she's had to work to get to where she is today. I hope and pray she continues to progress.

Wasserman Schultz, Tea Party, Tucson Shootings

This video reveals Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz to be a hypocrite.

As she speaks of the need for civility in political discourse, she says horrible things about the Tea Party movement.

She blames the Tea Party for the shootings in Tucson. She "hesitates to place blame," and then does exactly that.

The shooter, Jared Loughner, was not related to the Tea Party. The guy is insane. At present, he's not fit to stand trial.

Wasserman Schultz's rhetoric is part of the problem, not the solution.

One year ago, this moment seemed unlikely.

Gabrielle Giffords, shot point blank in the head by Jared Lee Loughner, attended a candlelight vigil to mark the anniversary of the shootings. She led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords led a crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance, her words ringing out across a cold Tucson night in a rare public appearance Sunday evening at a candlelight vigil one year after surviving a deadly shooting.

The Democratic congresswoman -- who has struggled to re-learn to walk after being shot in the head -- stepped onstage to cheers from the crowd. Ron Barber, a staffer who was wounded in the rampage that killed six one year ago, invited her to lead the audience in the pledge.

The crowd chanted: "Gabby, Gabby."

She limped to the podium, and husband Mark Kelly helped lift her left hand over her heart. After months of intensive speech therapy, Giffords recited the pledge with the audience, head held high and a smile on her face as she punched each word.

The remembrance at the University of Arizona capped off a day of events, including a church service that drew hundreds in the afternoon and a citywide bell-ringing at 10:11 a.m., the exact time a gunman started shooting at a Safeway political event on Jan. 8, 2011.

With hugs and tears, southern Arizonans remembered the dead, the shattered lives and those who acted heroically after a gunman opened fire at an outdoor meet-and-greet that severely wounded Giffords and 12 others.

"Those of us who survived were forever changed by that moment," Kelly said. "For the past year, we've had new realities to live with, the reality and pain of letting go of the past.

"There's a reality that life is unpredictable, and that even in the best of times, our cherished friends, the good, the caring, the innocent among us, the closest and dearest people we know, can be taken from us," he said.

Biden and Giffords: 'Cracked Head Club'

I can't believe Joe Biden is the vice president of the United States.

Count Vice President Biden among those excited to see Rep. Gabrielle Giffords at the U.S. Capitol yesterday.

Biden, who got advance notice from Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi that Giffords would show up, said the Arizona Democrat called him "Joe" when she saw him.

"I said, 'Now we're both members of the Cracked Head Club,'" Biden is quoted as saying in The Boston Globe.

Giffords was shot in the head Jan. 8 in a rampage during one of her constituent events in Tucson. Six people died.

The vice president has survived two craniotomies to remove brain aneurysms. His comment to Giffords yesterday was reported by The Washington Post, ABC News and others.

Her colleagues gave her a well-deserved standing ovation. It was really an incredible moment.

The fact that she survived such a terrible injury and was able to return to the House is miraculous.

The White House played up Giffords' return to Washington.

Her appearance was quite a secret. I wonder why.

There's something that concerns me.

It's this:

Pia Carusone, Giffords' chief of staff, has indicated that while the congresswoman is able to speak and walk, she remains a shadow of her former self.

...In an interview published Thursday in the Arizona Republic, Carusone said Giffords can express her basic wants and needs, but has difficulty stringing together sentences to verbalize more complex thoughts and feelings. Giffords, she said, relies on hand gestures and facial expressions.

"She is borrowing upon other ways of communicating. Her words are back more and more now, but she's still using facial expressions as a way to express. Pointing. Gesturing," Carusone said.

The description matches what experts expect from someone who has suffered a traumatic brain injury. Often, they can be easily disoriented, have trouble prioritizing, suffer from some memory loss and could have difficulty recognizing people. Some have difficulty doing several tasks at the same time.

Most cognitive recovery occurs in the first six months to a year after an injury, though it becomes less noticeable as time progresses. In the second year, progress sharply drops.

Carusone said if Giffords' recovery were to plateau now, "it would not be nearly the quality of life she had before."

That was on June 12, 2011, relatively recently.

"She remains a shadow of her former self."

"Giffords can express her basic wants and needs, but has difficulty stringing together sentences to verbalize more complex thoughts and feelings. Giffords, she said, relies on hand gestures and facial expressions."

Has Giffords improved dramatically since then?

I sincerely hope that's the case. I wish her a complete recovery.

Dan Kapanke: Threats, Vandalism

Republican Wisconsin Senator Dan Kapanke has received threats and suffered property damage.

(How many Democrat Wisconsin senators have been the target of death threats and vandalism?)

Sen. Dan Kapanke has canceled upcoming district meetings after being the target of threats and vandalism. Rose Smyrski, Kapanke's chief of staff, said the senator's car window was smashed in Madison, and his wife found nails scattered in the driveway of their French Island home.

He also received death threats.

The second-term Republican had scheduled a listening session Friday in Ontario and office hours Monday in West Salem. Another meeting in La Farge had not been announced, legislative aide Hannah Huffman said.

Kapanke issued a written statement saying he is evaluating future public appearances and would be "balancing his availability to the public and his safety" and that he "remains committed to meeting one-on-one with constituents."

For the time being Kapanke is limiting his meetings with big groups.

"He is someone who wants to be accessible," Smyrski said. "I just want to make sure he's safe."

She said she continues to set up individual constituent meetings, although the size of the district makes it challenging to fit everyone into his schedule.

Kapanke has been a target of numerous protests - as well as a recall effort - over his support for Gov. Scott Walker's controversial proposal to strip most public workers of their collective bargaining rights.

This is really sick.

I don't understand why Democrats in Wisconsin are mostly silent on what is shaping up as a widespread pattern of violent threats and actions against those supporting Scott Walker.

I don't understand why Obama, Mr. Civility after Tucson, doesn't make a statement on the thuggery in Wisconsin.

To her credit, State Representative Jennifer Shilling, Democrat from La Crosse, did comment on the attacks on Kapanke.

A vocal opponent of Walker's bill and of Republican legislative tactics, Rep. Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse) denounced the threats and vandalism in a written statement Thursday.

"I have said from the beginning of this session that those involved in political discourse have a responsibility to engage in meaningful debate and do so in a way that does not tear down our country or each other," she wrote. "I am once again calling for all citizens to make their voices heard and participate in this debate peacefully."

Was Shilling one of those Democrats in the Assembly screaming and chanting "SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!" and wearing an orange t-shirt?

I hope she conducted herself in a civil manner. If not, her written statement would be dripping with hypocrisy.

Obama decided to comment on the vote in the Wisconsin Senate.

The White House is denouncing a vote by the Wisconsin Senate to strip nearly all collective bargaining rights from government workers, calling it an assault on public employees.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Barack Obama believes it is wrong for Wisconsin to use its budget troubles "to denigrate or vilify public sector employees."

Again, Governor Scott Walker and the Republicans are NOT denigrating or vilifying public sector employees.

They are dealing with an enormous budget deficit without burdening the already burdened taxpayers.

That's what we voted for. That's what we want them to do.

If Obama's going to comment, he should comment on the death threats and the vile rhetoric of elected Democrat officials and protesters.

It's disgraceful that Obama is silent about this ugliness when he supposedly is the champion of the new tone.

I can only conclude that the speech he gave in Tucson, his call to be civil, was a load of crap.

Death threats to Wisconsin Republicans for doing the job voters elected them to do are not cool.

Unfortunately, the threats are not surprising given the hysterical rhetoric and behavior of the elected Democrats in the Wisconsin Legislature. Such threats can be expected to follow given the Leftist media's coverage of events and statements from the likes of Michael Moore, declaring on MSNBC last night that "This is war!." It's not unusual for union thugs to resort to violence.

Union officials, Wisconsin Democrats, Democrats in Washington, and Obama should condemn this. Certainly, Rev. Jesse Jackson, in Madison today, should condemn this.

The best way for them to do that is not just with words but with actions, by conducting themselves in a civil and respectful manner.

Jared Loughner Video - Pima Community College

This is very creepy.

KOLD News 13 has acquired a video that officials say is mass shooting suspect Jared Lee Loughner ranting as he walked around Pima Community College's Northwest campus.

The video, posted to YouTube on Sept. 23, contributed to the decision to suspend Loughner after college officials watched him complain that Pima took part in "the torture of students" and "genocide in America."

The video, no longer on the website, was released to The Los Angles Times after a public records request.

A campus police officer who saw the video "positively recognized the voice and the reflection in the window" as Loughner, according to a school police report. That same officer had removed Loughner from his biology class after a disruptive outburst. Officials say he made the tape that same day.

The video, "Pima Community College School - Genocide/Scam - Free Education - Broken United States Constitution," was created shortly after the biology class incident in which Loughner, the chief suspect in a Jan. 8 shooting that killed six and wounded 14, was escorted to an administrator's office, campus police said.

In the video, Loughner states, "The war that we are in right now is currently illegal under the Constitution;" "This is my genocide school. Where I'm going to be homeless because of this school;" "I haven't forgotten the teacher that gave me a B for freedom of speech;" "This is Pima Community College, one of the biggest scams in America;" "If the student is unable to locate the external universe, the student is unable to locate the internal universe;" and "Thank you. . . . This is Jared . . . from Pima College."

Obama, Heal Thyself

People continue to drool over Obama's speech at the "Together We Thrive" Rally/memorial service in Tucson on Wednesday night.

I think they should wipe the slobber off their faces before they declare that speech to be a definitive moment in Obama's presidency, elevating him to the level of a great healer. Unless Obama gets his act together, he will have revealed himself to be the hypocrite-in-chief.

Obama's words, his lecture on civility, will prove to be a complete embarrassment if he doesn't live up to the standards that he has set.

He pulled at the American people's heartstrings when, referring to the murdered 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green, he said:

"I want to live up to her expectations. I want our democracy to be as good as Christina imagined it. I want America to be as good as she imagined it. All of us -– we should do everything we can to make sure this country lives up to our children’s expectations."

Obama missed an opportunity to be concrete in his remarks. He did not take responsibility for his specific comments that most definitely do not live up to what he believes were Christina's expectations.

Obama did not say, "I want our democracy to be as good as Christina imagined and that effort will begin with me."

Obama did not apologize for his personal role in the current climate of hate. He did not take responsibility for his actions.

Obama's lecture in Arizona will ring extremely hollow if he continues to use such violent terms in his own rhetoric.

It's bad enough that he didn't apologize for his verbal irresponsibility and ask the American people to forgive him. Without question, Obama should have directly apologized to the family members of the dead and wounded in the Tucson shootings for his failure as president to promote civil discourse rather than exacerbating the problem.

Obama's has raised the bar for himself, not just the "great unwashed."

Obama cannot possibly heal the country that he believes is in dire need of renewal before he heals himself.

No Labels may get its wish for a "State of the Unity."

A plan that would have Republicans and Democrats sit side-by-side during this month's State of the Union address has picked up support from nearly one-fifth of the Senate as well as a handful of House members, including a top House Republican.

Seventeen senators have co-signed a letter drafted by Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) to congressional leaders urging them to back the idea of members of both parties sitting next to each other rather than at opposite ends of the House chamber during President Obama's Jan. 25 address.

Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski announced Friday that she is a "co-leader" of the letter. In addition to the 17 senators co-signing Udall's letter to leadership, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), the third-ranking Senate Democrat, has also come out in favor of the plan.

Among the 17 senators co-signing Udall's letter are five Republicans -- Murkowski and Sens. John McCain (Ariz.), Olympia Snowe (Maine), Susan Collins (Maine) and Kelly Ayotte (N.H.) -- and 11 Democrats -- Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.), Ron Wyden (Ore.), Mark Begich (Alaska), Barbara Boxer (Calif.), Claire McCaskill (Mo.), Ben Nelson (Neb.), Mary Landrieu (La.), Jack Reed (R.I.), Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.), Sheldon Whitehouse (R.I.) and Amy Klobuchar (Minn.). Connecticut Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman has also signed on.

The proposal has also picked up the support of eight House members, including House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.). McCarthy, the third-ranking House Republican, told reporters at a media briefing Friday morning at the House GOP's annual retreat in Baltimore that he planned to sit next to Hoyer during the president's address. Hoyer, the number-two House Democrat, came out in favor of the bipartisan seating plan Thursday.

I think this is silly. It's theater. Lame theater. Meaningless.

Will the members of the House and Senate wear caps to show their party affiliation so the television audience can see the mixing? That would be necessary for it to work visually.

Of course, the applause and ovations, the cheering and sneering, will display the party lines. But that sort of defeats the purpose.

We do have a two-party system in this country. That's a good thing. Why pretend those divisions aren't there? Mixed seating doesn't blur the lines.

Does anyone really think that Jared Loughner wouldn't have gone on his murderous shooting rampage if he happened to hear of the mixed seating plan for Obama's State of the Union speech?

It's ridiculous.

There is no way that Dems and Republicans sitting together during the speech will bring Americans together.

You can be sure that party operatives will be tweeting and blogging throughout the speech, spinning and fact-checking what Obama has to say. The Dems and Republicans will be holding viewing parties and fundraising. The slurs and insults and accusations will be flying. That's politics.

Obama is sure to use rhetoric that is deceptive and divisive. I don't expect him to change his stripes. Last year, he had no qualms about insulting the Supreme Court Justices sitting before him. It was so slimy. Will a different Obama deliver the State of the Union this year?

I sincerely doubt it.

But look! The Democrats and Republicans are sitting together!

So what?

It's meaningless.

Remember on 9/11 when the Democrats and Republicans joined together on the steps of the Capitol and sang "God Bless America"?

That symbolic display of unity was extremely and shamefully short-lived.

Within months of the al Qaeda attacks, the Democrats were screaming that President Bush could have prevented the bloodshed, that he knew in advance planes were going to be hijacked and flown into targets chosen for maximum symbolic and human loss.

If an event like 9/11 doesn't unify the country and cause the ugly rhetoric and political posturing to ebb, nothing will.

So, elected officials can sit wherever they want when Obama delivers his State of the Union address. I don't think it matters at all. It's meaningless.

Rather than mixed seating, I'd prefer Obama apologize for his personal history of irresponsible, violent political rhetoric.

Mark Levin and Chris Matthews

Earlier this week, MSNBC's Hardball host, Chris Matthews, specifically called out Mark Levin as being complicit in the Tucson shootings.

Mark Levin has responded to Matthews' remarks. Levin has put $100,000 on the table, challenging Matthews "to find any example where Sarah Palin has promoted the murder of anybody."

Levin also dares Matthews to cite an instance where he has called for the murder of a politician or anyone else he disagrees with politically.

I'm not talking about terrorists. I believe they should be killed and as fast as possible and as many as possible. But I mean where I have said, 'Go out there and kill X-Y-Z. Go out there and kill A-B-C. Go out there.' I challenge him right now. Sarah Palin, me. Go ahead, Chris.

Now I'm going to tell you something. Maybe I shouldn't, but I will. I'm waiting for an allegation that is very specific against me because I'm going to sue. I don't care if they're bloggers. I don't care if they're television hosts. I don't care if they're radio hosts. I'm going to drag your ass into federal court. Oh, you'll have due process. It will all be nice and legal. I'm going to personally depose you. I'm going to drag you in front of a jury and I'm going to get your assets.

Somebody has to stand up to this. Somebody has to draw the line.

Chris Matthews, Ed Schultz, Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, Joe Scarborough - test me. Test me. David Frum, you little weasel, test me - all of you.

I believe in the law. I believe in free speech. I believe in responsible speech.

Now, you want people to tone it down? OK, good. Anybody who accuses me of inciting mass murder in Tucson, Arizona is going to be sued. Period.

I don't mean, 'Oh, his rhetoric is incendiary.' I don't... anybody who tries to tie me to that monstrous event. I'm going to tell you why. When you get behind this microphone everyday, and you speak from the heart, and millions of people are listening, and family and friends, they're listening, too; they're affected by all these things. Now, I'm a public figure. I'm a big boy. I can handle this. The question is whether these other boys can handle it.

You think I'm kidding? Try me, because I'm not kidding. The laws of libel are actually older than the First Amendment.

Levin has made a smart move.

He has put the Left-wing hate talkers on notice. They will be sued if they dare to accuse Levin of inciting murder.

I agree that someone has to stand up to the trash being transmitted by MSNBC and being disseminated by the Leftists.

By telling the Left-wing hate machine of his intentions, I'm sure they won't mess with Levin.

The fact that someone finally promises to hold them accountable for what they say must strike fear in them as well as the MSNBC executives.

'Together We Thrive' Obama Rally

On Wednesday evening, there was supposed to be a memorial service for the shooting victims in Tucson.

Unfortunately, the atmosphere wasn't appropriately solemn and respectful. It had all the makings of a political rally, with cheering and yelping and people jumping to their feet, even event t-shirts.

My impression, as I watched the service unfold on TV, was not that a memorial was being held in the wake of a massacre that left 6 people dead and many others fighting for their lives.

One doesn't typically hear people acting like they're at a sporting event when they're supposed to be gathering to honor the dead.

When Janet Napolitano did a Scripture reading, it was met with cheers as if she had made a game winning three-point shot at the buzzer.

Truly bizarre.

There was definitely excitement in the air at the University of Arizona's McKale Center on Wednesday. University of Arizona President Robert Shelton served as the "master of ceremonies" for the memorial, but he had some trouble containing his enthusiasm.

When he introduced Obama, he shouted as if he were speaking at a campaign rally or serving as the announcer for The Price is Right. "President Obama! Come on down!" His fired up intro was followed by the yelps of the pumped up crowd.

Memorial service?

And Obama himself struggled to find the right tone in his speech. At times he spoke movingly about the victims. At other times, however, he would raise his voice and shift into campaign rally mode. It was jarring.

I think it was wrong for Obama to insert political talk into the alleged memorial service. This wasn't the time to yap about a new era of civility. That was off topic and belonged elsewhere, like in his State of the Union address.

Obama and others should have focused on the victims, remembering them, and leading the nation in mourning. This wasn't time for platitudes and preaching about "vitriol" and political divisions.

A sick, deranged individual went on a murderous rampage. What Jared Loughner did has nothing to do with the current level of political discourse in the country.

I'm surprised that the memorial was politicized the way it was.

When Governor Jan Brewer took the stage, some people booed.

Booing a speaker at a memorial service?

Inappropriate.

I don't understand how some media outlets and pundits can in good conscience report that the event was apolitical.

Michelle Malkin notes that the service was "branded."

"Together We Thrive" was the logo for the memorial, replete with "Together We Thrive" blue and white t-shirts.


Is "Together We Thrive" the new "Yes We Can"?

If the families of Loughner's victims found some comfort through the memorial/rally, then it was a positive gathering, in spite of the unseemly aspects.

In their grief, I doubt they're giving any thought to the inappropriateness of cheesy t-shirts or a university president visibly thrilled with hosting Obama or an out of control crowd.

Obama and the media are talking about healing.

That's dramatically easier said than done for those suffering this horrific, sudden loss of their precious loved ones.

For them, this isn't a television event with political ramifications, something to be analyzed with cool detachment. Healing probably isn't anywhere in sight for them yet.

At this point, shouldn't we be talking about them - the dead, the wounded, and the survivors left to bear the unbearable burden of such deep personal tragedy?

At a memorial, there should be the sounds of quiet prayers, expressions of concern, and support for the victims, not roars from a crowd cheering to support their political favorites.

I have just come from the University Medical Center, just a mile from here, where our friend Gabby courageously fights to recover even as we speak. And I want to tell you -- her husband Mark is here and he allows me to share this with you -- right after we went to visit, a few minutes after we left her room and some of her colleagues in Congress were in the room, Gabby opened her eyes for the first time. Gabby opened her eyes. Gabby opened her eyes, so I can tell you she knows we are here. She knows we love her. And she knows that we are rooting for her through what is undoubtedly going to be a difficult journey. We are there for her. (Applause.)

What are the odds that right after Obama visited, just minutes after he left Rep. Giffords' hospital room, she opened her eyes for the first time?

Just another of Obama's wondrous deeds?

At first, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords opened her eyes just a tiny bit. Then she opened them again, and again. With female friends from Congress and her husband huddled around her hospital bed - just moments after President Obama paid a visit Wednesday night - Giffords opened her eyes a total of five times and reached for her husband's hand, according to the people in the room.

It was the first time she had opened her eyes since the shooting that wounded her Saturday outside a Tucson grocery store. "We all started crying," Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) said in a phone interview from Air Force One later Wednesday night. "Other than the birth of my children, it was the most incredible moment I have ever had."

Having just flown in from Washington with Obama to attend a memorial service, the visitors did not expect Giffords to make one of the most affirmative gestures of her recovery so far.

When Giffords opened her eyes the first time, her husband and the doctor in the room reacted with shock. Giffords's husband, Mark Kelly, asked Giffords if she could give a thumbs up. She didn't at first. But after a few minutes, she was able to reach toward him. "Her whole arm went up in the air," Wasserman Schultz said. "She started touching his wedding ring." By the time Giffords opened her eyes for a fifth time, she was able to keep them open for more than 30 seconds, Wasserman Schultz said. The group was in the room 10 to 15 minutes.

Politico also recounts "the miracle."

There is no question that it is a tremendous positive sign that Giffords opened her eyes.

I understand the reaction of the people in her room. I personally have experienced seeing a loved one open his eyes for the first time after a health crisis. To see the person's eyes open again, after days of being closed, is a moment of great joy and hope. It feels like a gift from God.

I am so happy that Rep. Giffords continues to make progress in her recovery. Her husband and family and friends must be greatly encouraged. I'm happy for them, too. I'm praying this is just the beginning of much more progress to come. My prayers are with the other victims of the shootings also fighting to recover.

Regarding Obama's announcement of the improvement in Giffords' condition--

The way he phrased it during his speech opens himself up to criticism because he makes it sound like there was a cause and effect relationship between his visit and Giffords opening her eyes. He points out that it happened only minutes after he left her room.

That's not good.

I think Obama could easily have avoided this by simply saying he had some good news about Giffords' condition to share.

Bill Maher and Jay Leno, January 11, 2011 (Video)

Bill Maher brought his vitriol and incendiary rhetoric to the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Tuesday.

Maher always spews hateful, offensive stuff, but he really outdid himself.

He began by taking some of his trademarks shots at religion, mocking Christmas. One of his Christmas carols: "Oh, Come All Ye Faithless." Maher, raised Catholic and Jewish, said he doesn't hate Christmas because it doesn't have to be a religious thing. He called it a "national holiday."

Maher spoke of his childhood Christmas memories and mentioned how his mother loved Robert Goulet. He recalls the family always playing a Goulet Christmas album during the holidays. That's kind of a sweet memory but Maher fouled it by crudely describing how housewives of his mother's era allegedly responded to Goulet.

BILL MAHER: My mother had a thing for Robert Goulet. I think a lot of housewives - he gave a lot of pussy boners out there.

NBC bleeped the term. Leno even objected.

JAY LENO: The word is OK... I think when you put the word with 'mom,' it gets a little confusing.

Acting surprised that his choice of words was unacceptable, Maher followed that with, "Vagina erection, OK?"

Good grief, he's talking about his mother. How creepy!

Then, Leno brought up the 2010 elections and Christine O'Donnell. Leno actually said to Maher, "You were the one that outed her as a witch."

What?

O'Donnell wasn't and isn't a witch. Very lame and very predictable.

Maher then took some swipes at John Boehner and the new Congress. Leno asked Maher what he thought of the new Speaker of the House.

MAHER: Oh, love him, Jay. Why would I not like that achievement-free tool of the extraction industry's John Boehner?

MAHER: You know, these people, this new Congress, you know, I'll be the first to admit the Democrats are no prize. I mean, I'm not a registered Democrat because if I was I'd always be resigning, 'cause they'd always be pissing me off. But, I mean, to throw out the Democrats for the ideas that we know didn't work - you know, it's like, you know, it's like, 'Gee, I'm a little tired of our babysitter. Let's leave the kids on the road tonight.'

The audience was silent. That's understandable. He wasn't being entertaining.

Maher is out of touch with reality. Obama's been in office for two years. Obviously, his ideas haven't worked out well at all for most Americans.

Maher went on to whine about the $14 trillion debt without acknowledging Obama and the Dems' role in creating it. Convenient.

After the break, Maher really racheted up his rhetoric when discussing the shootings in Tucson. Leno, of course, didn't challenge Maher. He tacitly approved.

Leno asked Maher for his take on the violence, saying "You always have an interesting perspective on these things."

MAHER: Well, I mean, first of all, you know, we're gonna have to hear from the NRA a lot about how this shouldn't stop anything that they want to do. First of all, the NRA should just change their name to the Assassin's Lobby, because that's what they are.

(Smattering of applause)

Yeah, you can applaud that. Somebody should applaud that.

I'm so tired of hearing about the 2nd Amendment and the Constitution. If you love guns, just admit it like it's a vice. It's like alcohol or drugs or sex addiction or gambling. It's just a vice. It's something you like. It's not good for you or anybody else. You just like it; but stop the b---s--- about the 2nd Amendment and the Constitution because nobody needs, nobody needs a gun that fires 31 rounds. That's what this guy had, although Sarah Palin needed 5 to shoot that moose that was basically on the end of the couch.

MAHER: There's a much bigger issue which is the psychology of this country which loves guns. It's just a very armed country with a lot of crazy people, which is not a great combination.

And somebody also should tell all these people, these NRA types who think it's great to be armed everywhere - Arizona has one of the loosest gun rules in the country. You can, I think, carry any weapon concealed without a permit. They want every drunk in a bar to be armed in case a fight breaks out.

And these guys always think that, you know, it's great to have a gun, because if some bad stuff goes down, I'll be able to stop the bad guy. This is your fantasy, a--hole. You would never be able to do that. People have to be trained for months and months at a time. They have to really know what's going on to be able to stop something like that. If that really happened, they would probably freeze up and shoot the wrong person. So let's stop that fantasy also.

Sure. Arizona wants "every drunk in a bar to be armed." That's the plan.

Note how Maher engages in such crass name-calling. "A--hole." How civil of Maher! What a sophisticated level of discourse!

Maher had some words of criticism for the Democrats and Leno's studio audience.

MAHER: And also I think, how about the Democrats reclaiming this issue? This is the problem. I understand that the gun lobby owns the Supreme Court and they own the Republican Party. What's disappointing is that they have cowed the Democratic Party into silence. There should be one party that sticks up for this issue. Not expecting it from this crowd, but some audience somewhere should stick up for this issue.

Next, Leno brought up FOX News and Roger Ailes.

LENO: Now, Roger Ailes said that at FOX they're going to scale back the rhetoric. Do you think this will last for any longer than a week or two?

MAHER: No, because that's the rhetoric they love. The Right-wing loves... the go-to rhetoric for them is 'Wouldn't it be fun to kill the people we disagree with?'

Good Lord. Talk about incendiary rhetoric!

Appropriately, some in the audience objected to Maher's hateful blather.

MAHER: You know, they try to put across this false equivalence... No?

Really? Then, do you read?

Have you seen what people have said? Have you seen what Sarah Palin says? You know, she talks about 'Don't retreat, reload.' She says it like a pull-toy that's broken; every five minutes she says this. Michele Bachmann said she wants Minnesotans armed and dangerous. Allen West, a new congressman, said he wants his opponent to be afraid to leave the house. Left-wingers don't talk that way.

They don't? That's completely absurd.

Here's just a few of the terribly irresponsible things said by Leftists, including Obama.

Apparently, Maher has been engaging in some very selective listening.

The guy has no credibility.

MAHER: And also, Left-wingers, even if they do sometimes make a gun analogy or something, their audience isn't hysterical. They're already talking, the Right-wingers, to people who are hysterical and are irrational and are highly-armed to begin with.

Newt Gingrich - and by the way, among the Right-wing douchebags I hate, I hate him the mostest - because, I mean, he says things, he said the Obama administration is as much a threat to us as were the Nazis and the Soviet Union. Now, it's not just ridiculous, but when you, when you characterize the opposition, the political opposition as not just the opposition but the enemy, the Soviet Union and the Nazis were our enemies. Of course, you're gonna have borderline people who go and take this over the line.

So stop telling me that the Left and the Right are both crazy. Yes, there are crazies on the Left, but they're not the same, they're not gun crazy. They're not violent crazy.

MSNBC has spent days complaining about the rhetoric from the Right, yet NBC airs this crap from Maher?

Maher calls conservatives "hysterical" and irrational." How terribly divisive, not to mention untrue.

As he rants about crazies on the Right, Maher doesn't mention anything about Leftist American terrorists like Bill Ayers or Karl and Dwight Armstrong. They were responsible for killing their fellow Americans, yet Maher pretends they don't exist. And Leno is either too stupid or too brainwashed into a liberal mindset to point out Maher's omissions.

Maher is yapping about the "Right-wing douchebag" that he hates "the mostest." That's certainly not scaling back the rhetoric, NBC.

Maher complains about Gingrich comparing the Obama administration to the Nazis and the Soviet Union, in terms of being a threat to the nation. Did he complain when Dick Durbin uttered his infamous words referencing Nazis and the Soviets and Pol Pot?

"If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime — Pol Pot or others — that had no concern for human beings."

Durbin wasn't speaking about a threat to the U.S. and making a comparison. He was actually putting Americans in the same category as "Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime — Pol Pot or others — that had no concern for human beings."

Does Maher consider Durbin to be a "douchebag"? He certainly should if he's to be remotely consistent. Of course, he's not.

How utterly hypocritical and irresponsible on NBC's part to give someone as extreme as Maher a national platform to spew his drivel completely unchallenged!

Keith Olbermann and Clarence Dupnik (Video)

MSNBC and Keith Olbermann are having a field day in the aftermath of the shootings in Tucson.

Olbermann invited Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik to continue to disparage conservatives.

Dupnik didn't appear on MSNBC to offer any new information on the case. He had no updates. In fact, he said he wasn't on top of the latest developments because he's been occupied with media appearances. Sounds like a dereliction of duty to me.

The politicization of the bloodshed by Olbermann and Dupnik and their comrades is truly sick.

It's sad.

As Rahm Emanuel said in November 2008, "Never let a serious crisis go to waste. What I mean by that is it's an opportunity to do things you couldn't do before."

Olbermann and Dupnik are heeding Emanuel's advice.

Very sad.

Clarence Dupnik, Jeff Danziger, and Rush Limbaugh

The Washington Post has compiled the reactions of some editorial cartoonists to the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

Of the seven cartoons posted on its website, two are the work of Jeff Danziger.








Danziger's cartoons are syndicated by the New York Times Syndicate/Cartoonists and Writers Syndicate.

His two cartoons are clearly not based in reality. They're hateful. They're ugly. They're sick fantasies of a partisan hack.

Is Danziger's brand of vitriol the sort that Pima County Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik is railing against?

[H]ours after an assailant shot Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and killed six bystanders, there was a new Arizona sheriff in town. His name is Clarence W. Dupnik. He's a Democrat and a Rachel Maddow fan. And when he linked the Tucson shooting rampage to harsh conservative rhetoric, he drew cheers from some and brickbats from others.

...On Saturday, Dupnik, a friend of Giffords and a federal judge killed in the attack, spoke during a nationally televised news conference:

"When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government. The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous. And unfortunately, Arizona I think has become sort of the capital. We have become the mecca for prejudice and bigotry."

Dupnik hasn't backed down from his remarks, even though no ties have publicly surfaced between the suspect in the shootings and conservative political groups. In an interview Sunday, Dupnik had the air of a man who had reached his limits and couldn't remain quiet any longer.

Dupnik is a disgrace.

He knew that Jared Loughner had a history of making death threats. Dupnik knew that Loughner was mentally unstable and posed a potential danger to society.

Nonetheless, Dupnik went before the cameras on Saturday and preached about the Right's rhetoric, accusing conservatives of inciting violence. He continues to focus on the rhetoric of the Right as the cause of the deranged Loughner's murderous acts. Even though more information is being learned about Loughner and it's apparent the man is seriously disturbed, Dupnik is sticking with his anti-Right agenda.

On Monday, Dupnik came disgustingly close to holding Rush Limbaugh personally accountable for the shootings.

From ABC News:

"The kind of rhetoric that flows from people like Rush Limbaugh, in my judgment he is irresponsible, uses partial information, sometimes wrong information," Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said today. "[Limbaugh] attacks people, angers them against government, angers them against elected officials and that kind of behavior in my opinion is not without consequences."

This is absurd.

Dupnik is being irresponsible and spewing vitriol as he claims to be calling for civility.

This man is behaving terribly unprofessionally, inexcusably unprofessionally.

Actually, I think Dupnik shares a few traits with Jared Loughner, the shooter.

Both Dupnik and Loughner appear to crave attention and long to be in the spotlight. Both are stunningly selfish and thoughtless and disrespectful.

To be clear, I am NOT equating the irresponsible remarks of Dupnik with the deadly actions of Loughner. Of course, murdering and wounding 20 people is exponentially worse than what Dupnik is doing.

I'm just saying that Dupnik, rather than fulfilling his duty as sheriff and being a pacifying presence in the aftermath of these horrific events, is showing some instability himself through his shameless politicization of the shootings and his denial of reality.

It is not acceptable for Dupnik or Danziger or others on the Left to continue their baseless attacks on conservatives.

Dana Milbank, in his column today, considers Dupnik to be a hero. He condemns what he considers to be the vitriolic rhetoric of Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck, lecturing the Right to tone it down.

Milbank wants even more than a toning down of the rhetoric. He's exploiting the tragedy to silence them.

Milbank says, "Maybe Beck and Palin will be good enough to show us what a real moment of silence is - by having themselves a nice long one."

American Renaissance, Jared Loughner

A leaked government memo declaring Jared Loughner may be connected to American Renaissance has members of the group on defense.

Here's the text of the memo:

"The investigation has been taken over by the FBI, and is being run through the Tucson Command Post. Here's what can be confirmed at this time (1800 hrs)... * Gabrielle Giffords Is in ICU.* Federal judge John Roll is deceased. He did rule on a 32 million dollar civil rights lawsuit in February, 2010. That ruling brought death threats to Roll and his family, and for a time he was given a protection detail.* 6 deaths attributed to the shooting. 19 total people hit by gunfire.* suspect’s mother works for the Pima County Board of Supervisors* the suspect has multiple arrests ... But no criminal record? Intervention by someone?* no direct connection - but strong suspicion is being directed at AmRen / American Renaissance. Suspect is possibly linked to this group. (through videos posted on his myspace and YouTube account.). The group’s ideology is anti government, anti immigration, anti ZOG (Zionist Occupational Government), anti Semitic. Gabrielle Gifford is the first Jewish female elected to such a high position in the US government. She was also opposite this group’s ideology when it came to immigration debate.* DHS have a list of names and dates of birth of all victims.* the ACTIC is still playing a major role in the investigation... Jared Taylor, of American Renaissance, responds:

This is so hopelessly wrong that it is hard to believe it is a genuine government document. No one by the name of Loughner has ever been a subscriber to American Renaissance or has ever registered for an American Renaissance conference. We have no evidence that he has even visited the AR website.

American Renaissance condemns violence in the strongest possible terms, and nothing that has ever appeared in it pages could be interpreted as countenancing it.

AR is not anti-government, anti-Semitic, or anti-ZOG, as is clear from the 20 years of back issues that are posted on our website. The expression “ZOG” has never appeared in the pages of AR, and we have has always welcomed Jewish participation in our work. Many of the speakers at American Renaissance conferences have been Jewish.

Although the name Gabrielle Giffords has appeared in news articles we have excerpted on our website, AR itself has never mentioned her and has certainly never criticized her policies.

Finally, Gabrielle Giffords is not the “first Jewish female elected to such a high position in the US government.” Barbara Boxer has represented California in the Senate from 1993, and Diane Feinstein has done so since 1992. There are at least six Jewish congresswomen listed by Wikipedia as currently serving in the House.

If this memo is typical of the research done by the Department of Homeland Security, our country is in serious danger.

I telephoned DHS today to try to get the bottom of this nonsense, but apparently there is no homeland security on Sundays. The person who answered the phone said no one is there and that I should call back on Monday morning.

Fortunately, some of the media organizations that have been reporting this story have contacted me, and have reported my assertion that American Renaissance knows nothing at all about Jared Loughner, that we condemn all violence, and that we cannot possibly be described as anti-Semitic.

Even Mark Potok of the SPLC was quoted today as saying, “Jared Taylor is not an anti-Semite.”

We will report any further developments.

The media have not handled this story well.

Yesterday, MSNBC reported that Gabrielle Giffords had been killed. The Washington Post sent out an e-mail alert declaring that Giffords was dead. Those were absolutely inexcusable mistakes.

The New York Times and the father of shooting victim Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords point to the Tea Party.

The Times cites Sarah Palin's website as contributing to the violence.

During last spring’s health care votes, the language used against some lawmakers was ratcheted up again, with protesters outside the House hurling insults and slurs. The offices of some Democrats, including Ms. Giffords’s in Tucson, were vandalized.

Ms. Giffords was also among a group of Democratic House candidates featured on the Web site of Sarah Palin’s political action committee with cross hairs over their districts, a fact that disturbed Ms. Giffords at the time.

“We’re on Sarah Palin’s targeted list,” Ms. Giffords said last March. “But the thing is the way that she has it depicted has the cross hairs of a gun sight over our district. When people do that, they’ve got to realize there’s consequences to that.”

The image is no longer on the Web site, and Ms. Palin posted a statement saying “my sincere condolences are offered to the family of Representative Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today’s tragic shooting in Arizona. On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice.” (Late Saturday, the map was still on Ms. Palin’s Facebook page.)

Democrats have also pointed out cases where Republican candidates seemed to raise the prospect of armed revolt if Washington did not change its ways.

This is awful, but I knew it would happen. I knew some Leftists would exploit this horrific crime to achieve their political ends.

That's so sleazy. It's disgusting.

Suggesting that the Tea Party and conservatives serve as advocates for such violence and bear some responsibility for Jared Loughner's deranged behavior is shameful.

All decent, caring, respectable people condemn Loughner's murder spree and pray for the victims and their families.

It should be a given that all Americans would join together in grief for the dead and wounded. Everyone should feel outrage over the shootings.

It's wrong to blame Sarah Palin and the Tea Party. It would be just as wrong if I were to blame Leftists. Reportedly, Loughner was a liberal.

“As I knew him he was left wing, quite liberal. & oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy,” the former classmate, Caitie Parker, wrote in a series of Twitter feeds Saturday. “I haven’t seen him since ’07 though. He became very reclusive.”

“He was a political radical & met Giffords once before in ’07, asked her a question & he told me she was ‘stupid & unintelligent,’ ” she wrote.

I wouldn't say that the years and years of Left-wing vitriol and the irresponsible statements of elected Democrats are responsible for Loughner's actions.

I don't blame the radical Leftists and their use of extreme rhetoric and violent, bloody imagery.

I don't hold Obama responsible for the shootings because he said inflammatory things like "We're gonna PUNISH OUR ENEMIES," or "I want you to argue with them and get in their face," or "If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun."

I don't blame the Democratic Party of Wisconsin for Loughner's violence because it distributed a bumper sticker showing what appears to be blood spurting from Republican Governor Scott Walker's head.

I don't blame terrorists like Bill Ayers or murderers like Karl and Dwight Armstrong.

I don't blame anarchists.

I don't blame atheists.

I don't blame American flag-burners.

I don't blame the music of Drowning Pool.

I blame Jared Lee Loughner for committing murder - for killing 6 people and wounding 13 others, including a 9-year-old girl, Christina Green, a third grader.

The Pima County Sheriff's Office says 9-year-old Christina Green died in the attack that wounded Giffords and 12 others.

Christina was born on 9/11 and featured in the book "9/11: Faces of Hope." She reportedly attended Mesa Verde Elementary School.

The father of a classmate says she studied ballet and played baseball and was just elected to her third grade student council.

"Outgoing, intelligent girl. She's on student council, usually kids on the student council have some good things going for them," said Jason Matsuzawa.

She had apparently gone to the event with her uncle to meet Giffords.

Loughner is an assassin. He's evil. I'm confident justice will be done.

I pray for the dead and the wounded and the survivors.
