7 Stories Obama Doesn't Want Told

John F. Harris, Politico, shares the "7 stories Barack Obama doesn't want told."

The premise of his article is that Obama's image is taking hits because he's no longer controlling the storytelling.

During the 2008 campaign, the Obama camp managed to dupe many Americans into believing its narrative. Of course, some of us never bought into that.

The days of viewing Obama as the "mystically talented young idealist who stood for change in a disciplined and thoughtful way" may be over.

Harris writes:

A year into his presidency, however, Obama’s gift for controlling his image shows signs of faltering. As Washington returns to work from the Thanksgiving holiday, there are several anti-Obama storylines gaining momentum.

The Obama White House argues that all of these storylines are inaccurate or unfair. In some cases these anti-Obama narratives are fanned by Republicans, in some cases by reporters and commentators.

But they all are serious threats to Obama, if they gain enough currency to become the dominant frame through which people interpret the president’s actions and motives.

Here are seven storylines Obama needs to worry about:
1. He thinks he’s playing with Monopoly money

2. Too much Leonard Nimoy

3. That’s the Chicago Way

4. He’s a pushover

5. He sees America as another pleasant country on the U.N. roll call, somewhere between Albania and Zimbabwe

6. President Pelosi

7. He’s in love with the man in the mirror

Harris explains each of the seven storylines.

What's interesting is that Harris refers to them as "storylines," as if they're mostly fiction.

I see them as documentary material.

Harris concludes, "Obama’s best hope of nipping bad storylines is to replace them with good ones rooted in public perceptions of his effectiveness."

The bad "storylines" aren't going away. I suppose they can be overridden, but I don't think Obama has an extreme makeover, including a character transplant, on his schedule.

Chris Matthews and 'Family Guy' (Video)

Chris Matthews agreed to lend his voice to last night's episode of Family Guy.

Apparently, Matthews enjoys being mocked via pop culture references.

BRIAN GRIFFIN, DOG: See, I knew it was just a matter of time before somebody would recognize my genius.

STEWIE GRIFFIN: Woa. Take it easy. You're getting a bigger head than Chris Matthews.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: The economy's in the news today, and Congress is considering a minimum wage increase. Live by satellite to talk about, Sen. Harry Reid in Washington. How about it, Sen. Reid, is this the right move during the worst recession since the 1930s?

SENATOR HARRY REID, (D-Nev.): Look, if we're going to get this economy back on track, we have to get more money in the pockets of hard working...

(CROSSTALK OVER ONE ANOTHER)

MATTHEWS: Senator, let me finish. My forehead, my rules. Let's go to Los Angeles. Big actor, played the father in "That 70s Show," Kurtwood Smith. How's it going, Kurtwood?

KURTWOOD SMITH: Good, thanks for having me.

Jesus on an Iron

Mary Jo Coady believes she has received a sign from God.

In this photo taken Monday, Nov. 23, 2009 residue is seen on the bottom of an electric iron at the home of Mary Jo Coady, in Methuen, Mass. Coady says an image of Jesus Christ that she sees in the pattern on the bottom of the iron, which she first noticed on Sunday, has reassured her that 'life is going to be good.' (AP Photo/The Eagle-Tribune, Grant Morris)

METHUEN, Mass. – A Massachusetts woman who recently separated from her husband and had her hours cut at work says an image of Jesus Christ she sees on her iron has reassured her that "life is going to be good."

Mary Jo Coady first noticed the image Sunday when she walked into her daughter's room.

...The 44-year-old Coady was raised Catholic. She and her two college-age daughters agree that the image looks like Jesus and is proof that "he's listening."

Coady tells The Eagle-Tribune she hopes her story will inspire others during the holidays. She says she plans to keep the iron in a closet and buy a new one.

The image does resemble Jesus, but I think it looks more like the Mona Lisa.

I guess Jesus is in the eye of the beholder.

Obama Address December 1 - Prime Time Screwed Up

It's been a while since Obama has screwed up the prime time television lineup by delivering an address or holding a press conference.

Unfortunately, he's decided it's time to seize the airwaves once again.

Networks are adjusting their schedules to accommodate Obama.

From TVbytheNumbers:

President Obama plans to address the nation Tuesday, December 1 at 8pm eastern about his plans with Afghanistan and all four major broadcast networks plan to air the address.

The address is only scheduled for 30 minutes, though some networks (ABC & NBC) look to give it one hour of coverage. Overall with the exception of ABC, which pushed its Disney Prep & Landing special to the following Tuesday, the impacts were fairly minimal:

ABC: moves 30 minute version of A Charlie Brown Christmas and Disney Prep & Landing to December 8, replacing a one hour version of A Charlie Brown Christmas previously scheduled. The 9pm-11pm portion of the schedule is unchanged.

FOX: will air the address and then the regular 2 hour So You Think You Can Dance.

CBS: will air a repeat of NCIS at 8:30pm, followed by a repeat of Two & A Half Men at 9:30 and the Victoria Secret Fashion Show at 10pm (a repeat of NCIS: LA gets bumped).

NBC: Will air the regular 2 hour version of The Biggest Loser from 9pm-11pm bumping The Jay Leno Show off the schedule.

I am not happy that Obama's address is causing A Charlie Brown Christmas to be bumped from ABC's Tuesday schedule.

What's stupid about Obama's "big" addresses to the nation is the content is revealed ahead of time. There's really no announcement.

What's the point?

________________

And here's what Obama will say:
At West Point, Obama was expected to announce an increase of up to 35,000 more U.S. forces to defeat the Taliban-led insurgency and stabilize a weak Afghan government. The escalation, which would take place over the next year, would put more than 100,000 American troops in Afghanistan at an annual cost of about $75 billion.

Obama is also expected to outline an exit strategy for the war.

Tiger Woods Statement, Neighbor's 911 Call

Statement from Tiger Woods:

As you all know, I had a single-car accident earlier this week, and sustained some injuries. I have some cuts, bruising and right now I'm pretty sore.

This situation is my fault, and it's obviously embarrassing to my family and me. I'm human and I'm not perfect. I will certainly make sure this doesn't happen again.

This is a private matter and I want to keep it that way. Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible.

The only person responsible for the accident is me. My wife, Elin, acted courageously when she saw I was hurt and in trouble. She was the first person to help me. Any other assertion is absolutely false.

This incident has been stressful and very difficult for Elin, our family and me. I appreciate all the concern and well wishes that we have received. But, I would also ask for some understanding that my family and I deserve some privacy no matter how intrusive some people can be.

Why are there rumors?

They're filling the void where facts should be. Refusing to talk authorities, especially after promising to do so, is certainly strange.

Obviously, getting lawyered up is a sign that this isn't a simple matter.

Without being specific, Woods comments on being imperfect and places the blame for whatever happened on himself.

It must be incredibly difficult to have private matters play out in public. I guess that's the downside of fame and earning ONE BILLION DOLLARS.

Why be so afraid to come clean?

The public is very forgiving.

How much money does he need?

Here's a 911 call from Woods' neighbor.

Transcript of 911 call.

Tiger Woods: 'Kobe Special'

This is not just a TMZ story. It's not just a sports story.

It's big news, as if Tiger Woods' 2:25 a.m. Friday car accident is one of the most pressing issues of our time.

Woods is an icon. Of course there was a lot of genuine concern when the story of the accident first broke and his condition was unclear. Now, however, there seems to be interest in the story more from the gossip angle than anything else. It's not as if facial lacerations, scratches on his lips, will have an impact on his golf game.

There's still a lot that isn't known. At this point, I think what's fueling the story is the fact that Woods isn't talking to investigators.

The best way to put an end to all the speculation and rumors about Woods and his wife, Elin Nordegren, and the other woman, Rachel Uchitel, would be for Woods to simply talk to Florida's highway patrol or issue some sort of statement. This total silence is weird.

Nordegren did talk to the officers at the scene of the accident, but as TMZ reports, she later changed her story.

The Windemere Police Department says Tiger's wife went outside, saw that her husband had struck a fire hydrant and a tree, and then went back inside the house for a golf club to use to try and extricate him from the vehicle. But we've learned Nordegren told a very different story to the Florida Highway Patrol, and it does not involve going back in the house for a club. Our sources will not allow us to be more specific.

And we've learned there was no blood found on the steering wheel of Tiger's SUV -- putting into serious doubt that Tiger sustained his injuries from the crash.

Odd.

From AP:

The mystery over Tiger Woods' car crash intensified Saturday when his agent called state troopers on their way to Woods' house and asked them to wait another day before speaking to him.

It was the second straight day Woods was unavailable to talk. His wife told troopers on Friday afternoon, after the world's No. 1 golfer had been treated and released from a hospital, that he was sleeping and asked that they return Saturday.

Woods is not required by law to speak to the Florida Highway Patrol because it is being investigated as a traffic accident, spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Montes said.

Woods was injured when his Cadillac SUV struck a fire hydrant and a tree just beyond his driveway at 2:25 a.m. Friday. Police said his lips were cut and blood was in his mouth when officers arrived. Police chief Daniel Saylor said Woods' wife, Elin, smashed the back window with a golf club to help get him out.

Montes said troopers were en route to Woods' $2.4 million mansion in the gated community of Isleworth when agent Mark Steinberg called dispatch and was put through to the troopers, telling them Woods and his wife were unavailable.

"I don't know what was said," Montes said.

Steinberg did not immediately respond to a text message seeking comment.

With so many questions lingering — where was he going at that hour? — and rumors circulating on the Internet, one marketing expert said silence was only stirring the pot.

"Every 10 seconds these days, people update their tweets," said David Schwab, vice president of Octagon. "People are just adding speculation and controversy. You need something to settle the ship. If he's not able to do it, find someone to do it for him."

It's really a bad move on Woods' part to let the story linger with so many unanswered questions.

On Sunday, the 911 tapes should be released.

That will be a circus.

Getting to the truth is better than letting rumors swirl. Hiding is making matters worse.

Did Nordegren beat up Woods during a fight about his relationship with Rachel Uchitel?

Was Woods driving under the influence of prescription painkillers?

Although dealing with the consequences of revealing the truth may be unpleasant and embarrassing, it's not good to hide. That's just adding another layer of sleaze to the story.

From TMZ:

Tiger Woods had a "Kobe Special" on his brain hours after what looks like a domestic dispute with his wife, Elin Nordegren -- this according to someone who spoke with Tiger on Friday.

During the phone conversation on Friday, Tiger told his friend, "I have to run to Zales to get a 'Kobe Special.'" The person on the other end of the phone asked Tiger what a "Kobe Special" was. The reply -- "A house on a finger."

During the conversation, Tiger said his wife had "gone ghetto" on him.

As we first reported, Tiger told the friend his wife had scratched his face up during an argument over a report that the golf great had cheated on her. The "other woman" named in the story -- Rachel Uchitel -- calls the report "bulls**t."

Who knows?

Will Elin Nordegren soon be sporting a "Kobe Special"?

I don't think Woods will escape unscathed from this episode. I don't expect him to lose any of his commercial endorsements, but his image has taken a hit.

He's off the pedestal.

Turns out he's human.

Michaele and Tareq Salahi

Obama hosts the first state dinner of his administration, an extravagant event, and what's the only thing the public cares about?

The fact that the party was crashed by Michaele and Tareq Salahi.

Since Wednesday, these two have been a media obsession. They must be thrilled.

Nov. 24, 2009: President Barack Obama greets Michaele and Tareq Salahi during a receiving line in the Blue Room of the White House before the State Dinner with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India. (Photo/White House)

From the New York Times:

As White House officials fended off new questions about how a fame-seeking couple finessed their way into the president’s glittering state dinner last week, the aspiring reality-TV stars themselves began trying to sell their story for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Television industry executives said on Saturday that Michaele and Tareq Salahi had postponed plans for an interview Monday on CNN’s “Larry King Live” and were seeking top-dollar bids for their first television interview.

The Salahis, who embarrassed the Secret Service by passing through its security screens as if invisible and then posed for the cameras with President Obama and many of his bona fide guests at a party honoring India’s prime minister, remained out of sight on Saturday and their spokeswoman did not return calls. The Secret Service would not comment or say whether investigators have interviewed the pair.

For years, the Salahis have publicized their own flashy adventures in the social and sporting scenes of Washington and its outlying horse country, and left behind a record of lawsuits and unpaid bills, many from the bankruptcy of the family vineyard after extended litigation between Mr. Salahi and his parents.

As questions continued to swirl about the pair’s most remarkable appearance to date, a television network executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the network does not publicly comment on payments, said the couple’s asking price for an interview was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. “They are asking for best offers from all the networks,” the executive said. Programs quietly pay steep fees for photographs and videos to secure interviews in some cases.

Separately, a CNN spokesman confirmed that the appearance on Mr. King’s talk show was postponed on Friday.

The Salahis want more than fame. They want money.

I don't think these pathetic people should be paid for an interview. I don't think any network should give them a forum at all.

Balloon boy and his family didn't get paid for their media blitz in the hours after their stunt. Falcon Heene even provided the added entertainment of throwing up on national TV -- for free!

No way should the Salahis receive money to brag about crashing the state dinner.

Meanwhile, several invited guests who had entered the White House through the same entrance as the Salahis said the Secret Service’s normal security check-in process, familiar to many of them, had been haphazard.

They said Secret Service guards had not directed the visitors through the guardhouse with its metal detector and X-ray screeners, located just inside the east entrance. Instead, after guards glanced at ID cards in the dark, they waited in a chilly mist outside the East Wing portico. Then they were funneled to a portable metal detector but no X-ray scanner for checking other belongings.

This is really disturbing.

The lax security is inexcusable.

What were they thinking?

The Salahis were not national celebrities but they assiduously cultivated an image as well-connected Washington socialites.

Michaele Salahi has boasted about her work for high-profile charities and is being considered for a brighter spotlight, as a cast member on Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of D.C.” Mr. Salahi, born in Washington, was chief executive of Oasis Winery, a now-bankrupt winery in Virginia that his father started in the 1970s. A polo player, Mr. Salahi also founded the America’s Polo Cup, an annual international match that takes place in Washington.

Bravo cannot allow Michaele Salahi to be a cast member. That would be sending a terrible signal to every crazed publicity seeking nutjob in the country.

I would like Obama to make a public statement about this incident.

He should say that the Salahis and the Secret Service acted stupidly, the way he did when he spoke out against the Cambridge police.

But in this case, he would be right.

Scott Walker - Plymouth Christmas Parade

It was a beautiful night for the Plymouth Christmas Parade. It was clear and not too cold, almost no wind.

The Wacky Wheeler was a popular feature.

Another crowd favorite was Scott Walker.

As he made his way along the parade route, people applauded enthusiastically and waved.

This notion that Walker's popularity stops at Milwaukee County's borders is ridiculous. He received a very warm welcome in Sheboygan County on Friday night.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Proclamation Establishing Thanksgiving Day

October 3, 1863

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle, or the ship; the axe had enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years, with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the city of Washington, this third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the independence of the United States the eighty-eighth.

A. Lincoln

Thanksgiving Dinner and Taxes

From Americans for Tax Reform:

40.91 Percent of the Cost of Your Thanksgiving Dinner is Brought to You Courtesy of the Government

As you finalize your Thanksgiving plans, be sure to reserve a seat at your table for an extra guest: Uncle Sam.

Have you ever asked yourself how much of the cost of your Thanksgiving feast is owed to the fact that the government takes a big bite at it in hidden taxes?

The Americans for Tax Reform Foundation and the Center for Fiscal Accountability have calculated just how big that government “tax bite” for Thanksgiving is, and it clocks in at a whopping 40.91 percent.

I find 40.91 percent difficult to swallow.

Obama: Thanksgiving E-Mail

Here's Obama's Thanksgiving E-mail:

From: "President Barack Obama"
Subject: Thanksgiving
Date: Wednesday, November 25, 2009 3:51 PM

Friend --

Tomorrow, Thanksgiving Day, Americans across the country will sit down together, count our blessings, and give thanks for our families and our loved ones.

American families reflect the diversity of this great nation. No two are exactly alike, but there is a common thread they each share.

Our families are bound together through times of joy and times of grief. They shape us, support us, instill the values that guide us as individuals, and make possible all that we achieve.

So tomorrow, I'll be giving thanks for my family -- for all the wisdom, support, and love they have brought into my life.

But tomorrow is also a day to remember those who cannot sit down to break bread with those they love.

The soldier overseas holding down a lonely post and missing his kids. The sailor who left her home to serve a higher calling. The folks who must spend tomorrow apart from their families to work a second job, so they can keep food on the table or send a child to school.

We are grateful beyond words for the service and hard work of so many Americans who make our country great through their sacrifice. And this year, we know that far too many face a daily struggle that puts the comfort and security we all deserve painfully out of reach.

So when we gather tomorrow, let us also use the occasion to renew our commitment to building a more peaceful and prosperous future that every American family can enjoy.

It seems like a lifetime ago that a crowd met on a frigid February morning in Springfield, Illinois to set out on an improbable course to change our nation.

In the years since, Michelle and I have been blessed with the support and friendship of the millions of Americans who have come together to form this ongoing movement for change.

You have been there through victories and setbacks. You have given of yourselves beyond measure. You have enabled all that we have accomplished -- and you have had the courage to dream yet bigger dreams for what we can still achieve.

So in this season of thanks giving, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to you, and my anticipation of the brighter future we are creating together.

With warmest wishes for a happy holiday season from my family to yours,

President Barack Obama

White House Visitor Records: Health Care Talks and Lobbyists

Remember Obama on the presidential campaign trail? Remember that he promised the American people lobbyists wouldn't run his White House?

From FOX News:

A senior White House adviser, briefing reporters on the first 100 days of the Obama presidency, said the toughest promise to keep has been on reducing the role of lobbyists and conceded the president had not lived up to his promise to post legislation for five days on the Internet before signing it.

"It's been tough," the adviser said, describing raging internal debates on the anti-lobbyist policy that he said the White House has struggled to conform with campaign rhetoric.

It was a tough issue for Obama as a candidate, too. Before the crucial Iowa caucuses, Obama frequently vowed that "they (lobbyists) won't work in my White House."

But when he was pressed by reporters a couple of weeks before the caucuses, Obama dialed his exclusion back, saying: "They are not going to run my White House. And they won't drown out the voices of the American people."

White House visitor records reveal that lobbyists are certainly playing a prominent role in Obama's push to take over health care and establish a government-run system.

Based on polls showing that the American people oppose the Democrats' health care scheme, it seems that Obama's White House is allowing lobbyists to drown out the voices of the American people.

I suppose that's because Team Obama is enlisting the lobbyists to help ram the health care overhaul down the throats of Americans.

They're good lobbyists.

From the Associated Press:
Top aides to President Barack Obama met early and often with lobbyists, Democratic political strategists and other interests with a stake in the administration's national health care overhaul, White House visitor records obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press show.

The AP in early August asked the White House to produce records identifying communications that top Obama aides — including chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, senior advisers David Axelrod, Valerie Jarrett and Pete Rouse, and 18 others — had with outside interests on health care. The AP in late September narrowed its request to White House visitor records for those officials on health care.

The White House on Wednesday provided AP with 575 visitor records covering the period from Jan. 20, when Obama was inaugurated, through August. The records give the name of each visitor to the White House complex to see people on AP's list, the date of the visit, who they were supposed to see, how many people attended the gathering, and in a sampling of cases, the purpose of the visit. The records do not identify the visitors' employers, say on whose behalf they were there or give any specifics on what was discussed.

The records show a broad cross-section of the people most heavily involved in the health care debate, weighted heavily with those who want to overhaul the system. Among them were Dr. Eliot Fisher, a Dartmouth health researcher who has estimated that nearly one-third of health care dollars are wasted on unneeded services, and Dr. David Himmelstein of Harvard Medical School, who is among the top advocates of a single-payer health care system.

The list also includes George Halvorson, chairman and CEO of Kaiser Health Plans; Scott Serota, president and CEO of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association; Kenneth Kies, a Washington lobbyist who represents Blue Cross/Blue Shield, among other clients; Billy Tauzin, head of PhRMA, the drug industry lobby; and Richard Umbdenstock, chief of the American Hospital Association.

Several lobbyists for powerful health care interests, including insurers, drug companies and large employers, also visited the White House complex, the records show:

• Laird Burnett, a top lobbyist for insurer Kaiser Foundation Health Plan Inc., and a former Senate aide. Kaiser has spent some $1.7 million lobbying Congress over the past two years.

• Joshua Ackil, a lobbyist whose clients include Intel, U.S. Oncology Inc., and Knoa Software Inc., all of which have reported lobbying on the health care overhaul. Ackil met with Dan Turton, the White House's deputy legislative affairs director who works with the House, in August. Seven people were at the Aug. 21 meeting, the records show.

• Alissa Fox, a lobbyist with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, met March 31 with Peter Orszag, director of the Office of Management and Budget. Four people attended, the records show. The health insurance federation has spent at least $6.7 million lobbying this year.

• Mark Agrast, a lobbyist for the Center for American Progress Action Fund, met in June with Phil Schiliro, the White House legislative affairs director, with 22 people there, the records show.

• Amador "Dean" Aguillen, a former aide to Nancy Pelosi who is now with Ogilvy Government Relations, where he lobbies for clients including pharmaceutical companies SanofiPasteur and Takeda Pharmaceuticals America, Pfizer Inc., and Amgen USA Inc., all of which reported lobbying on health care issues this year. Aguillen appears to have attended the same Aug. 21 meeting with Turton that Ackil did.

• Merribel Ayres, a lobbyist who appears to focus on environmental issues such as energy and climate change. Ayres visited Schiliro on Aug. 18 at a meeting attended by five people, the records show.

The logs show a late-July meeting between Nancy-Ann DeParle, the director of Obama's Office of Health Reform, and lobbyists from the Business Roundtable, the association representing chief executives of major U.S. firms that has spent $9.3 million lobbying over the last two years and is keenly interested in the outcome of the health overhaul debate. Among the attendees at that session were the group's top lobbyist John J. Castellani, and Antonio Perez, the CEO of Eastman Kodak Company.

Demonstrating the political element of the health care debate, the records show that senior adviser Axelrod held what was described as a "communications message meeting" on March 13 with 18 people, including prominent Democratic strategists Brad Woodhouse, the party's communications director, and his predecessor Karen Finney; Steve McMahon, a campaign veteran and media strategist; Hilary Rosen, the former top lobbyist for the music industry; Jennifer Palmieri of the liberal Center for American Progress, John Edwards' former press secretary and a veteran of the Clinton White House; Maria Cardona, a specialist in Hispanic outreach at the Dewey Square Group; and Simon Rosenberg a founder of the centrist New Democrat Network.

Obama promised, "[T]hey won't drown out the voices of the American people."

Promise broken.

Obama Pardons 'Courage'

Obama issued the first pardon of his presidency this morning.

Remarks by the President on Pardoning of the National Turkey

11:41 A.M. EST

THE PRESIDENT: Happy Thanksgiving, everybody. Welcome to the White House. On behalf of Sasha and Malia and myself, we're thrilled to see you. I want to thank Walter Pelletier, chairman of the National Turkey Federation, and Joel Brandenberger, its president, for donating this year's turkey. His name is "Courage," and he traveled here from Goldsboro, North Carolina, where he was raised under Walter's own precious care.

(Turkey gobbles.)

THE PRESIDENT: There you go. (Laughter.)

Now, the National Turkey Federation has been bringing its finest turkeys to the White House for more than 50 years. I'm told Presidents Eisenhower and Johnson actually ate their turkeys. You can't fault them for that; that's a good-looking bird. (Laughter.) President Kennedy was even given a turkey with a sign around its neck that said, "Good Eatin', Mr. President." But he showed mercy and he said, "Let's keep him going." And 20 years ago this Thanksgiving, the first President Bush issued the first official presidential pardon for a turkey.

Today, I am pleased to announce that thanks to the interventions of Malia and Sasha -- because I was planning to eat this sucker -- (laughter) -- "Courage" will also be spared this terrible and delicious fate. Later today, he'll head to Disneyland, where he'll be grand marshal of tomorrow's parade. And just in case "Courage" can't fulfill his responsibilities, Walter brought along another turkey, "Carolina," as an alternate, the stand-in.

Now, later this afternoon, Michelle, Malia, Sasha and I will take two of their less fortunate brethren to Martha's Table, an organization that does extraordinary work to help folks here in D.C. who need it the most. And I want to thank Jaindl's Turkey Farm in Orefield, Pennsylvania, for donating those dressed birds for dinner. So today, all told, I believe it's fair to say that we have saved or created four turkeys. (Laughter.)

You know, there are certain days that remind me of why I ran for this office. And then there are moments like this -- (laughter) -- where I pardon a turkey and send it to Disneyland. (Laughter.) But every single day, I am thankful for the extraordinary responsibility that the American people have placed in me. I am humbled by the privilege that it is to serve them, and the tremendous honor it is to serve as Commander-in-Chief of the finest military in the world -- and I want to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to every service member at home or in harm's way. We're proud of you and we are thinking of you and we're praying for you.

When my family and I sit around the table tomorrow, just like millions of other families across America, we'll take time to give our thanks for many blessings. But we'll also remember this is a time when so many members of our American family are hurting. There's no question this has been a tough year for America. We're at war. Our economy is emerging from an extraordinary recession into recovery. But there's a long way to go and a lot of work to do.

In more tranquil times, it's easy to notice our many blessings. It's even easier to take them for granted. But in times like these, they resonate a bit more powerfully. When President Lincoln set aside the National Day of Thanksgiving for the first time -- to celebrate America's "fruitful fields," "healthful skies," and the "strength and vigor" of the American people -- it was in the midst of the Civil War, just when the future of our very union was most in doubt. So think about that. When times were darkest, President Lincoln understood that our American blessings shined brighter than ever.

This is an era of new perils and new hardships. But we are, as ever, a people of endless compassion, boundless ingenuity, limitless strength. We're the heirs to a hard-earned history and stewards of a land of God-given beauty. We are Americans. And for all this, we give our humble thanks -- to our predecessors, to one another, and to God.

So on this quintessentially American holiday, as we give thanks for what we've got, let's also give back to those who are less fortunate. As we give thanks for our loved ones, let us remember those who can't be with us. And as we give thanks for our security, let's in turn thank those who've sacrificed to make it possible, wherever they may be.

Now, before this turkey gets too nervous that Bo will escape and screw up this pardon -- (laughter) -- or before I change my mind, I hereby pardon "Courage" so that he can live out the rest of his days in peace and tranquility in Disneyland.

And to every American, I want to wish you, on behalf of myself, Malia, Sasha, and Michelle, the happiest of Thanksgivings. Thank you very much, everybody. (Applause.)

The Swamp offers an account of the event.
"Is there an official gesture?" asked Obama, holding a hand up like a Star Wars warrior. "Courage, you are hereby pardoned, you will live in Disneyland."

"He's like a large chicken," a daughter noted.

"He is like a large chicken," the father said. "I don't know about the haircut, though."

Large chicken. That's cute.

Obama didn't seem prepared for the pardon.

"Is there an official gesture?"

He's the president, not the pope.

Adam Lambert - Early Show (Video)

Straight talk from Adam Lambert this morning? Interesting. I don't think he's being honest.

Adam Lambert was dropped from ABC's Good Morning America, but The Early Show on CBS was more than happy to pick him up.

Maggie Rodriguez interviewed Lambert.

From CBS:

Adam Lambert says the firestorm following his sexually-charged performance on Sunday's American Music Awards show took him aback.

He told "Early Show" co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez Wednesday he had "no clue. No clue at all," his appearance would prove as controversial as it has. "I was really looking forward to it. I worked really hard with my dancers and my band for about two weeks putting that together. And, I admit I did get carried away, but I don't see anything wrong with it. I do see how people got offended, and that was not my intention. My intention was just to interpret the lyrics of my song and have a good time up there."

...Lambert told Rodriguez he didn't plan to be so provocative, saying, "Those kind of came from more of an impromptu place. No, those were not rehearsed. So I think ABC was taken a little by surprise. That wasn't my intention. I wasn't being sneaky. It got the most of me, I guess."

He also said he's "not a babysitter, I'm a performer" when asked if he wanted to apologize to parents of any kids who might have been watching. "I think it's up to the parents to discern what their child's watching on television," Lambert said at one point. Later he observed, "I think it's up to a parent to watch the television. It was almost 11:00 at night. If they're concerned with certain material maybe Tivo it and preview it before your small child is watching it."

He added he thinks the reaction to his performance stems from a double-standard against gay males, asserting that, "If it had been a female pop performer ... I don't think there'd be nearly as much of an outrage at all."

...Adam Lambert conceded to Rodriguez, "I suppose I can understand why (parents are) upset. And, honestly, it didn't cross my mind, children. It was almost 11:00. It was a nighttime show. I was there in the audience full of mostly adults. Sometimes, I forget, 'Oh, there's a camera on.' I come from the theater. And I'm programmed to kind of look at who's in the live audience, and that's kind of where I come from. So, I was looking out in the crowd and saw some of my favorite pop stars and thought, 'I want to let loose.' And it just kind of got the best of me. And I had a great time. Unfortunately, there were people upset, but I think there are also people who really enjoyed it. So, like 'Idol,' I guess I have a tendency to divide people -- apples and oranges -- you either like it or you don't."

He concluded the interview by promising parents his performance later in the show would be "appropriate. I promise."

If Lambert really had "no clue" as he claims, then he is remarkably naive.

Lambert is getting exactly what he wanted: A LOT of attention.

What better way than to have a big controversy to launch his new album?

His victim act seems so contrived. I don't know if Lambert really feels victimized but there's no question that he's playing the media like a master.

What a load to suggest that he's being treated differently because he's a gay male!

I saw the performance live on the American Music Awards. I saw Lambert whip the leashes and shove the face of a male dancer down on his knees into his crotch. As far as the kiss goes, I didn't realize that he kissed a male.

My reaction had nothing to do with Lambert's personal sexual orientation.

The male-on-male kiss is irrelevant. The fact that Lambert is gay is irrelevant. It was shocking because it was relentlessly and extremely sexually graphic in nature for network TV AND because of all the kids who witnessed the performance.

It wasn't 11:00 PM in the Central time zone.

Lambert puts the onus on the parents for what their children watch. He's right to a point, but parents likely didn't expect ABC to air something so explicit. TiVo? Give me a break!

It's so silly for Lambert to claim that he got caught up in the moment. "[I]t just kind of got the best of me." Yeah, right. He's a seasoned performer. He knew exactly what he was doing.

Lambert offers no apologies. Fine. He just lost his younger fan base.

I think this whole thing was calculated on Lambert's part. He intentionally kissed his American Idol persona goodbye.

Ed Begley Jr. on FOX News

Ed Begley Jr. was spewing a massive amount of emissions on FOX News Channel yesterday when he was shouting at Stuart Varney, sitting in for Neil Cavuto.

I think Begley must be a bit stressed due to the revelations that the scientific community promoting the theory of man-made global warming/climate change has been manipulating the public, hiding findings, falsifying research, and generally screwing with the people's right to know.

Begley won't even consider the possibility that the science on the subject isn't settled. He refuses to entertain the notion that the debate is ongoing, even in the face of the scandal

He raises his voice. He leans in toward Varney and shakes his finger in his face. Varney gets quite animated as well.

Video, from Big Hollywood.

I love this quote from Begley:

What is an Easy Bake Oven, the little kids' toy, an Easy Bake Oven? Why does a light bulb...? A light bulb is a little mini-toaster!

My house is full of mini-toasters!

Of course, Begley and like-minded environmental extremists must have some concern that Climategate will derail their efforts.

They have to know that the mainstream media boycott on the scandal won't make it go away.

That has to be discouraging.

Sen. James Inhofe is launching an investigation. It's definitely not going away.

White House State Dinner Guest List

Here's the guest list.

It includes Mr. Brian Williams and Mrs. Jane Williams.

Chris Matthews must be so jealous.

Obama: First State Dinner

The Obamas hosted their first state dinner on Tuesday, Camelot II.

Don't expect to find any criticism in the liberal media of the Obamas throwing this lavish affair with so many people around the country out of work.

Don't expect the libs to find fault with the Obamas inviting a slew of Hollywood celebrities and friends to the White House while military families across the U.S. wait for word on what Obama plans to do in Afghanistan.

The Obamas weren't exactly feeling the pain of Americans last night. They couldn't be bothered.

I guess they just had to throw an extravagant, glamorous event to remind Americans how much we have to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, even if many of us are out of work or underemployed and struggling to keep up with the bills.

From the New York Times:

It is an old tradition, a White House dinner governed by ritual and protocol that happens to be this city’s hottest social event. But at their first state dinner on Tuesday night, President Obama and his wife, Michelle, made sure to infuse the glittering gala with distinctive touches.

They hired a new florist, Laura Dowling, who bedecked the tented outdoor dining room with locally grown, sustainably harvested magnolia branches and ivy. They selected a guest chef, Marcus Samuelsson of Aquavit in New York, an American citizen who was born in Ethiopia, reared in Sweden and cooks up melting pots of flavors and cuisines.

They invited local students to witness the arrival of the guests of honor, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India and his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and presented a mélange of musical entertainment, including the National Symphony Orchestra; Jennifer Hudson, the singer and actress; Kurt Elling, the jazz musician from Chicago; and A. R. Rahman, the Indian composer who wrote the score to the movie “Slumdog Millionaire.”

And at the tables, the meatless menu included a mix of Indian and American favorites, including some African-American standards. Collard greens and curried prawns, chickpeas and okra, nan and cornbread were served to the 320 guests — including some well-known Republicans and prominent Indian-Americans — who started off with arugula from the White House garden and finished up with pumpkin pie tart. (After a tasting at the White House on Sunday, the Obamas gave the dishes their stamp of approval, Mr. Samuelsson said.)

And don’t forget the dinner plates. For an administration that publicly prizes bipartisanship, what could be finer than an eclectic mix of Clinton and Bush china?

Bipartisanship? An eclectic mix of Clinton and Bush china?

Good grief. That's a joke, right?

That's the only show of bipartisanship Obama has managed to pull off so far in his presidency.

The Obamas' guest list lacked diversity.

Although the New York Times notes that Mitch McConnell, Senate minority leader, and Representative John A. Boehner, House minority leader, were invited but did not attend, no mention is made of the fact that Obama's 2008 election opponent John McCain was not on the guest list.

Obama didn't even give him an invite.

“He wants to set a tone that’s different,” Vishakha N. Desai, a dinner guest and the Indian-born president of the Asia Society, said of the president. “Obama’s celebrating not just his African-American heritage, but the cultural diversity of America. And that’s a powerful message to send to the world.”

Obama was just trotting around Asia sending a powerful message to the world and it didn't go over too well.

He's weak. He wasn't received as a towering, transformative figure.

Mr. Obama greeted his guests in Hindi and hailed the contributions of Mohandas K. Gandhi and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., saying that such “giants” are “the reason why both of us can stand here tonight.”

Hindi?

Did Obama bow? I'm sure everyone wanted to get glimpse of one of his signature bows.

Mr. Singh responded, “Your journey to the White House has captured the imaginations of millions and millions of Indians.”

Yeah, I'm sure they're thrilled.
The evening was a potent mix of politics, diplomacy and glamour, with the administration’s favored donors mingling with lawmakers from Congress, cabinet secretaries, Indian dignitaries and Hollywood celebrities decked out in tuxedos and designer dresses. The first lady wore a golden sleeveless gown created by Naeem Khan, an Indian-American designer.

For Mr. Obama, it was also a rare break from the bruising business of governance, allowing him to showcase his role as a world leader (and a gracious host) at a time when he is managing battles over health care legislation and wars in Afghanistan and Iraq — all while watching his standing falling in the polls.

Good God!

"For Mr. Obama, it was also a rare break from the bruising business of governance, allowing him to showcase his role as a world leader (and a gracious host)...."

That is positively sickening.

World leader and gracious host Obama got a rare break from the bruising business of governance.

Give me a break!

In eight years in office, did President Bush ever get that sort of treatment in the press?

The guest list included the actors Alfre Woodard and Blair Underwood, the directors Steven Spielberg and M. Night Shyamalan, the writer Jhumpa Lahiri, former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, a Republican, and Indra Nooyi, the chief executive of PepsiCo.

“It does allow him to stand above the current squabbles in politics, to assume that role of head and state and remind people of the stature of the presidency,” said Doris Kearns Goodwin, the presidential historian, who noted that Franklin D. Roosevelt’s most famous state dinner — for the king and queen of England — occurred during the Depression.

“It’s a break from the daily concerns,” Ms. Goodwin said. “This is our moment for that kind of ceremony, for that pomp and circumstance, and that’s nonpartisan.”

Yes, by all means drag out Goodwin to explain that this extravagance is appropriate. Sure.
...So as Washington buzzed in recent days about who was invited and who was not, many wondered how the country’s first African-American president and first lady would put their personal stamp on the occasion.

The Obamas promptly distinguished themselves from their immediate predecessors by holding their dinner under a grand tent on the South Lawn to allow for a more expansive guest list. (President Bush held his dinners indoors, which sharply limited the numbers of guests.) And they emphasized some of their favorite themes, including bipartisanship, diversity and a focus on healthy meals.

Really?

Washington was buzzing about the personal stamp the first black guy to be president would put on the occasion?

Why?

I thought Obama was supposed to be post-racial. There sure is a lot of emphasis on race. The Left can't seem to stop talking about it.

And of course the Obamas held the event "under a grand tent." President Bush, the elitist, held such occasions indoors "which sharply limited the number of guests."

That is stunningly lame.

The Obamas emphasized their favorite themes: bipartisanship, diversity and a focus on healthy meals.

This article is priceless. It's nauseating but also entertaining. It's so silly that it's funny.

...Mrs. Obama made a splash by showcasing deep, rich colors — apple green for the tablecloths and varying shades of plum, purple and fuchsia in the hydrangea, roses and sweet peas in the centerpieces.

There was White House honey and sage from the garden and a menu that gave vegetables and beans — including eggplants and lentils — top billing. (For a White House keen on promoting fresh fruits and vegetables, what could be more serendipitous than a guest of honor who happens to be a vegetarian?) And the Obamas shook things up by serving, among other dishes, Indian food to an Indian delegation, typically a no-no.

The stars aligned and the guest of honor happened to be a vegetarian!

What luck for the health conscious Obamas! Pure magic!

Now that the first state dinner for the Obamas is over, the Leftists have to let go of the magic and face reality -- like the reality of war.

Time to think about Afghanistan. Let's not forget Iraq. Let's not forget our troops separated from their families this Thanksgiving. They're waiting for Obama to make a decision and act like the commander in chief.

And let's not forget about the millions and millions of Americans struggling because of the economy.

No "honey and sage from the garden" for them.

Thanksgiving SUCKS!! (So does America)

Obama Thanksgiving Turkey Pardon

Tomorrow, I believe Obama will keep up the tradition of pardoning the national Thanksgiving turkey.

I'm not sure. He may need more time to make a decision. If Obama is true to form, he might dither. We'll find out tomorrow.

I miss the Thanksgiving traditions of the George W. Bush White House.

I miss the White House website page for kids. Obama has young daughters. You'd think he'd be interested in getting children engaged. Apparently not.

There was no online vote this year to name the turkeys.

Previous names of the national Thanksgiving turkeys:

2005: Marshmallow and Yam

2006: Flyer and Fryer

2007: May and Flower

2008: Pumpkin and Pecan

Assuming that Obama does maintain the presidential tradition of pardoning the national Thanksgiving turkey, I wonder if he will bow to the bird before sparing it.

Oprah's Mom Vernita Lee Settles Valentina Suit

Vernita Lee (Photo)

It took over a year to reach a settlement, but Oprah Winfrey's mother, Vernita Lee, has reached an agreement with Valentina Inc.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Oprah Winfrey's mother and the high-end fashion store that sued her over a $155,547 debt have settled the lawsuit.

Details of the settlement between Vernita Lee of Milwaukee and the store, Valentina Inc., have not been filed yet in Waukesha County Circuit Court.

When the settlement agreement is entered, it will remain secret. However, the deal involves Valentina receiving a partial payment for what it said it was owed.

"We're happy with what transpired. It's over," said Tony Chirchirillo, Valentina co-owner. "We can get on with our lives; they can get on with theirs."

Chirchirillo declined to release details of the settlement, as did his attorney, Joseph C. Niebler Sr. Michelle Schindler, one of the attorneys representing Lee, declined to comment Monday.

Judge Ralph Ramirez has scheduled the case for possible dismissal on Dec. 7.

Valentina, which had a store in Brookfield, sued Lee in July 2008, contending that she racked up a bill of $155,547.31 in purchases and interest as of July 1 of that year. She was required to make a minimum monthly payment of $2,000, the suit says.

Attorneys for Lee countered in court documents that Lee should not have to pay Valentina because the store extended credit despite knowing her troubles managing debt.

...Niebler said the settlement in the latest case was amicable and that neither side admitted any wrongdoing.

Valentina moved from the Brookfield location this year to Milwaukee's Third Ward and changed its name to Falcon. It also has a Valentina store in Mequon.

Partial payment?

Perhaps the interest was deducted.

In any event, the case was settled amicably and neither side admitted wrongdoing.

Everyone is happy!

Jessica McBride: Public Private Matters

In the Waukesha Freeman, Jessica McBride responds to the latest media frenzy about her personal life.

The bottom line: "This should never have been a story in the first place, back in June."

I, for one, think the majority of the reporting on the relationship between Jessica McBride and Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn has been an incredibly inappropriate intrusion into their lives and their families' lives.

Lead crusader, Dan Bice, acts as if he's on a mission from God. Truly bizarre.

I sincerely don't get it.

I get the motivation in terms of the Journal Sentinel and the Journal Broadcast Group hoping to profit by going tabloid. What I don't get is why these NEWS organizations are willing to throw away their respectability and their standards like this. It's terribly short-sighted. Frankly, it's creepy.

I feel like I'm witnessing a public stoning. It's wrong.

The comments that Bice and the Journal Sentinel permit on their website are an absolute disgrace.

I don't allow that sort of trash on this site. The Journal Sentinel should make some policy changes regarding comments. If they're being moderated, there needs to be a more responsible moderator. Some of the comments on Bice's column are terribly offensive, inexcusably offensive. Are there no standards of decency?

Hey! Journal Sentinel! What are you doing?

WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

Do Bice and other members of the local media think about how their reporting is impacting the lives of people caught in this drama, the ones who aren't public figures?

Do they think about the children and other family members? Do they care about the "collateral damage" from their obsessive coverage of this private matter?

Obviously not.

I don't think private pain should be sold for public consumption.

The holier-than-thou people slamming the parties involved via blog posts and comments posted on the JS site should be ashamed as well to be taking part and adding to this ugly stew.

Remember, these are real people, real lives, real consequences.

What I'm seeing is flat-out cruelty on the part of the media and the online critics of Jessica McBride and Ed Flynn.

Human beings certainly are an imperfect lot.

Richard Cohen: 'The missing Obama'

Like a growing number of liberals, Richard Cohen is disillusioned. He's lost. He's abandoned.

Where is Obama?

It wasn't supposed to be like this.

From the Washington Post, Cohen writes:

In my set, I am known as the guy who always had some reservations about Barack Obama. Sure, I supported him in the primaries against Hillary Clinton and I voted for him, with both glee and enthusiasm, especially after John McCain uttered the most shocking words in American politics -- "Sarah Palin." But I had such qualms about Obama that I even disparaged his famous speech on race, which almost everyone else thought was just about the greatest ever given on the subject. I just reread it -- and I was a bit chastened (I was too severe), but mostly I was saddened. Where is the man who once gave that speech?

...The speech, delivered in Philadelphia in March 2008, was compelled by the rantings of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who had been Obama's pastor and spiritual adviser. Wright, a man of a certain age with the emotional scar tissue that comes from a life in a harshly racist society, had let loose his anger -- and it had been caught on tape and YouTubed around the world. A sermon that had a context and an appreciative audience looked like sheer demagoguery and madness on the small screen. Obama had to kiss off Wright.

He did so with style and with dignity. But more than that, to reread the speech is to be impressed once again with the fluidity of Obama's mind -- his logic, his reasoning and his immense writing talent, which made a great impression on the impressionable people in my profession.

But to reread the speech is also to come face to face with an Obama of keen moral clarity. Here was a man who knew why he was running for president and knew, also precisely, what he personified. He could talk to America as a black man and a white man -- having lived in both worlds. He could -- and he did -- explain to America what it is like to have been a black man of Wright's age and what it is like even now to be a black man of any age.

Somehow, though, that moral clarity has dissipated.

No.

Cohen is wrong about that alleged moral clarity of Obama.

It hasn't dissipated. It never was there.

Of course, liberals are disappointed. They're learning what about half the country knew before the election -- Obama isn't a great intellectual with an unwavering moral compass.

The fog that the liberals were lost in has lifted, revealing that they were duped into believing Obama possessed qualities he doesn't have.

The Obama who was leading a movement of professed political purity is the very same person who as president would not meet with the Dalai Lama, lest he annoy the very sensitive Chinese. He is the same man who bowed to the emperor of Japan when, in my estimation, the president of the United States should bow to no man. He is the same president who in China played the mannequin for the Chinese government, appearing at stage-managed news conferences and events -- and having his remarks sometimes censored. When I saw him in that picture alone on the Great Wall, he seemed to be thinking, "What the hell am I doing here?" If so, it was a good question.

The Barack Obama of that Philadelphia speech would not have let his attorney general, Eric Holder, announce the new policy for trying Khalid Sheik Mohammed and four other Sept. 11 defendants in criminal court, as if this were a mere departmental issue and not one of momentous policy. And the Barack Obama of the speech would have enunciated a principle of law and not an ad hoc system in which some alleged terrorists are tried in civilian courts and some before military tribunals. What is the principle in that: What works, works? Try putting that one on the Liberty Bell.

Of course, there's a difference between campaigning and governing. There is no reality to campaigning. You want Guantanamo closed, you say you'll close it. You want to close it as president, and all of a sudden it becomes a political crisis that costs you your White House counsel, an experienced and principled man named Gregory Craig. Governing is hard.

But governing has to be informed by moral clarity, by the sense that we always know the president's interior life -- his bottom lines. Obama's political career has been too brief for us to know his bottom lines by votes cast in any legislative body or decisions made as an administrator. He had little record but lots of rhetoric -- much of it morally stirring and beautifully written.

As president, though, he has tried so hard to be the un-George Bush that the former president's overweening moralism -- his insistence on seeing things as either black or white -- has become an Obama gray. Human rights in general has been treated as if it's a Republican idea. Obama should reread his Philadelphia speech. He'll find a good man there.

This is rich.

Cohen longs to have a president with moral clarity, "that we always know the president's interior life -- his bottom lines."

In terms of having clarity, Cohen wants Obama to be more like President George W. Bush. That's kind of funny, wanting what so many Leftists hated about President Bush.

Yes, the liberals are growing restless. They're experiencing anxiety. Obama is missing.

Reality has intruded.

Obama's Philadelphia speech was a campaign necessity, nothing more. Liberals inflated it to be something it wasn't. They inflated Obama into someone he wasn't, a man of conviction with a greater calling.

REALITY: The Obama that Cohen and the liberals now are trying to get back was never there in the first place. They won't be able to find what never was.

Meg Kissinger: 'A Soldier's Story'

In Sunday's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Meg Kissinger wrote the story of Army Spec. James Weigl, a Iraq war veteran who committed suicide.

On Monday, Mark Belling discussed the article, noting that Kissinger's piece lacked context. He took issue with the fact that she used Weigl's personal story to make a larger point about military service and suicide that just wasn't there.

Kissinger writes:

Weigl's death is part an alarming epidemic of suicides among those who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Last year, the official number of suicides by active-duty Army soldiers hit an all-time high at 140. In the first half of this year, the Army reported 129 confirmed or suspected suicides - more than the number of soldiers who died from hostile action during that time.

Suicide by veterans is tougher to pin down, largely because more than 70% of them get their psychiatric care through providers other than the Veterans Administration. But VA officials say suicide is a growing problem.

The Nov. 5 shootings by an Army psychiatrist that killed 13 at Fort Hood in Texas have raised even more concern about the psychological toll of the wars, now over eight years running.

Weigl's case shows how the military needs to do a better job at every step - from questions recruiters ask those enlisting to the kind of psychological care offered to active soldiers to record-keeping for veterans.

The Army has declined to comment on Weigl's death. But a review of his military and medical files - painstakingly gathered by his mother and provided to the Journal Sentinel - shows mistakes were made and several warning signs were missed.

Weigl never should have been in the military in the first place.

He had at least two conditions that would have disqualified him - an anaphylactic reaction to vaccines that caused his throat to close and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Both are spelled out as disqualifying conditions in the Army's Standards of Medical Fitness.

Weigl was discouraged from getting psychiatric care while in the Army, even after he attempted to kill himself in 2007. His medical records at the VA's Zablocki Medical Center were incomplete and consistently inaccurate. They are riddled with wrong birth dates, a wrong address and incorrect phone numbers. A VA psychologist confused Weigl with a veteran who had been incarcerated.

...Afraid that his potentially deadly reactions to vaccines would keep him out of the military, Weigl forged his mother's signature on a note, claiming that he was allergic to penicillin but nothing else.

"They put him up in a hotel in Milwaukee for the 24 hours after he signed up," Mike Weigl said. "We didn't even know he'd signed up before it was too late to back out."

Recruiters did not note Weigl had been diagnosed at the age of 4 as having attention deficit hyperactivity disorder that was so pronounced he had attended special classes in school. Nor did they ask Weigl about a family history of mental illness. His mother and other close family members suffer from treatment-resistant depression. Studies show family history of depression is a strong indicator of vulnerability for the disease.

In discussing Kissinger's article, Belling refers to an e-mail exchange between Kissinger and a reader who questioned Kissinger's treatment of the story.

It turns out that the "alarming epidemic" of suicide that Kissinger cites is not nearly as dramatic as she leads her audience to believe.

MARK BELLING: A reader challenged Meg Kissinger on her reporting and got the following acknowledgment from Kissinger:

'The suicide rate for soldiers is higher than for the general population, 20.5 per 100,000 versus 19.5.' And then she writes to him, 'It's a huge and growing problem for the military and they have greatly stepped up prevention efforts.'

Belling points out that Kissinger didn't reveal those statistics in her article, even though the suicide rates between Army veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and those in the general population are within any statistical margin of error. Of course, revealing those statistics would negate her premise.

The e-mailer did some research on the suicide rates of other branches of the military. When combining those figures, one arrives at a suicide rate even lower than the general population.

It turns out that what Kissinger calls an "alarming epidemic" isn't that alarming at all. That is not to say that veterans committing suicide isn't a serious matter. It certainly deserves attention.

Kissinger writes, "Weigl never should have been in the military in the first place." She says that several warning signs were missed and mistakes were made.

However, while she casts blame on the military, she doesn't hold Weigl himself as accountable as she should.

He lied when he enlisted, forging his mother's signature on a note that claimed "he was allergic to penicillin but nothing else."

Although she mentions it, Kissinger glosses over the fact that Weigl had a family history of depression. She blames recruiters for not asking about Weigl's "family history of mental illness. His mother and other close family members suffer from treatment-resistant depression."

Kissinger points out, "Studies show family history of depression is a strong indicator of vulnerability for the disease."

Certainly, Weigl and his family bear responsibility, too. It's wrong for Kissinger to dump it all on the Army. It's especially odd because she admits that Weigl was "vulnerable for the disease." That vulnerability had nothing to do with his position in the military.

Belling goes on, reading the e-mailer's reply to Kissinger:

BELLING: Now my e-mailer, who clearly knows something about the subject, suggests that people who are troubled before they go into the military would be the very people who would be likely perhaps or at least possible, potentially liable to commit suicide whether they served in the military or not.

Now he sent this response to Meg Kissinger, writing to Meg: 'Huge number. Again, compared to what?' This is referring to her claim of 20.5 versus 19.5. 'I'd say that is well within the margin for error, don't you? I could also argue that you only looked at the general population numbers instead of the apples to apples comparison of ages 20-24. But even so, why wasn't that vital number put in your article?'

...He continues, 'What about the other points in my letter? The fact that...' And then he goes into things that she put in her story -- 'that his mom and other close family members suffered from treatment-resistant depression. You don't think that that should have been highlighted in the beginning of the article?' And then he writes, 'It's sloppy agenda-driven reporting like this and non-answers like yours below that remind me why I need to cancel my subscription.'

The e-mailer CC'd his response to Kissinger to the Journal Sentinel Managing Editor, George Stanley.

This is where the story gets really weird.

Kissinger goes ballistic. Belling reads Kissinger's reply, sent at 12:12 PM on Monday, to the e-mailer.

BELLING: 'Agenda-driven? What the hell gives you the right to say that? You're picking a fight with me and I greatly resent it. Who are you? Where do you work? What is your boss's name and e-mail so I can copy him and question your motivations. This is a legitimate story and no amount of paranoia and hatemongering will change that. Meg Kissinger, Reporter.'

Good grief.

She really flies off the handle.

That's not very professional on Kissinger's part. The e-mailer makes some very valid points. It's not paranoia or hatemongering.

Why won't Kissinger acknowledge that?

There's no question that James Weigl's story is a terribly sad one. He was suffering, killed himself, and now his family must suffer with that.

But it's not right to mislead readers the way Kissinger does. It's wrong to claim that there is an "alarming epidemic" of suicide among Iraq and Afghanistan veterans when it's not significantly greater than suicide in the general population.

Kissinger impugns the military for failing to prevent suicide in its ranks, while she e-mails that the military has greatly stepped up efforts to address the mental health needs of service members in terms of suicide prevention.

I think Kissinger may have become so angry in her communications because she realized that the e-mailer was, in fact, making sense. She wouldn't have cared if he had CC'd Stanley with a bunch of paranoid, hateful drivel.

I suppose Kissinger didn't count on being challenged.

Accountability bites.

David Obey: War Surtax

Wisconsin's own Dave Obey has proposed a new tax. Low-income earners would not escape this one.

From FOX News:

Two top Democrats say they want to impose a new tax on the wealthy to finance any increase in U.S. troops for the Afghanistan war.

Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., chairman of the purse string-controlling House Appropriations Committee, is calling the idea a "war surtax." He said that just as the federal government is expected to pay for its proposed intervention in the health care sector with new taxes, any escalated involvement in Afghanistan should come with a payment plan.

"If we have to pay for the health care bill, we should pay for the war as well ... by having a war surtax," Obey told ABC News in an interview that aired Monday. "The problem in this country with this issue is that the only people that has to sacrifice are military families and they've had to go to the well again and again and again and again, and everybody else is blithely unaffected by the war."

...President Obama plans to hold his ninth meeting Monday evening with his national security team to discuss options for overhauling the strategy in Afghanistan. The president has been considering requests for tens of thousands more U.S. troops from his top commander, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, for nearly three months. He is not expected to announce his new strategy before Thanksgiving.

But any request would likely come with a hefty price tag. One option presented by McChrystal would bring 40,000 more troops into Afghanistan -- a proposal estimated to cost about $40 billion, according to the Office of Management and Budget.

Obey said if an increase like that is approved without any payment mechanism, then other domestic initiatives would be wiped out.

"On the merits I think it's a mistake to deepen our involvement. But if we are going to do that, then at least we ought to pay for it. Because if we don't, if we don't pay for it, then the cost of the Afghan war will wipe out every other initiative that we have to rebuild our economy," he said. "Ain't going to be no money for nothing if we pour it all into Afghanistan."

Obey's proposal would be a "graduated tax" on income. It reportedly would start at 1 percent for low-income earners and rise to 5 percent for high-income earners. He's calling it a surtax because it would essentially be a tax on income that is already subject to federal income tax.

"Ain't going to be no money for nothing if we pour it all into Afghanistan."

Good grief.

That's not how we talk in Wisconsin.

Polar Bears Falling from Sky - Shock Ad

This ad from Plane Stupid, "bringing the aviation industry back down to earth," is typical of radical environmentalists.

It's meant to shock. It's graphic and bloody and over the top and stupid.

From the ad:

an average european flight produces over 400kg of greenhouse gases for every passenger...

that's the weight of an adult polar bear.

planestupid.com

From Plane Stupid:
Your flight has an impact. Plane Stupid's new cinema ad, written and commissioned by creative agency Mother and made by production company Rattling Stick. Director Daniel Kleinman.

We have a problem. We're flying too much, and it's changing the earth's climate. Aviation is the fastest growing cause of climate change. But instead of doing anything about it, the Government is planning more flights and larger airports.

Like you, we're worried about climate change. Like you, we don't think the Government can be trusted to do what needs to be done.

It's OK though: we've got a plan.

It is stupid.

SNL: Palin 2012 Movie Trailer

Spoofing the movie 2012, Saturday Night Live aired a movie trailer of 2012 with a twist.

Sarah Palin is elected president of the United States in 2012.

Glenn Beck is vice president.

WHO WILL SURVIVE?

Video.

My first reaction was that SNL really slammed Sarah Palin once again. But then I noted that Leftist nutjobs weren't exactly being spared.

Interspersed between the apocalyptic scenes on the screen are the words:

WE WERE WARNED

THIS DAY WOULD COME

We see:

I'm thinking this is just stupid, more Palin bashing, not very original. Then comes the funny part.
THE DNC PRESENTS

FROM THE MIND OF KEITH OLBERMANN

A POLITICAL DISASTER

OF EPIC PROPORTIONS

ON ELECTION DAY 2012

PLANT EARTH

IS GOING ROGUE

This is the sort of "sky is falling" crap that comes from the DNC.

It's certainly the kind of ridiculousness that Keith Olbermann, buddy of Obama, spews on his low-rated cable show.

I love the "FROM THE MIND OF KEITH OLBERMANN."

Is it unkind to Sarah Palin? Not really.

I think it makes those at the DNC and hacks like Olbermann look like utter buffoons.

Adam Lambert, American Music Awards (Video)

Adam Lambert was the final performance of the American Music Awards on Sunday night.

I think that was smart. He sang "For Your Entertainment."

This was not family entertainment. All the little girls who are Adam Lambert fans from American Idol and stayed up to watch the AMAs and see their favorite perform got quite a shock.

Lambert had promised a "sexy performance."

If you call Lambert holding men on leashes, rubbing a man's face in his crotch, and a woman grabbing Lambert's crotch sexy, then it was sexy.

The S&M garb combined with the choreography was quite... What's the word? Breathtaking?

ABC chose to take the camera off Lambert and pan the audience after that move. Grinding the guy's face in his crotch I guess crossed the line.

ABC didn't cut away as the woman grabbed Lambert with her black-gloved hand. She held on for a while.

I'm not a prude. I was just a bit surprised that ABC chose to give Lambert so much leeway in his performance. It was definitely for adults, not something for kids.

"For Your Entertainment" - Lyrics

So hot
Out the box
Can we pick up the pace?
Turn it up,
Heat it up
I need to be entertained
Push the limit
Are you with it?
Baby, don’t be afraid
I’ma hurt ‘ya real good, baby

Let’s go
It’s my show
Baby, do what I say
Don’t trip off the glitz
That I’m gonna display
I told ya
I’ma hold ya down until you’re amazed
Give it to ya ’til your screaming my name

No escaping when I start
Once I’m in I own your heart
There’s no way you’ll ring the alarm
So hold on until it’s over

Oh, do you know what you got into?
Can you handle what I’m ’bout to do?
‘Cause it’s about to get rough for you
I’m here for your entertainment

Oh, I bet you thought that I was soft and sweet
‘Ya fallen angel swept ya off ya feet
Well I’m about to turn up the heat
I’m here for your entertainment

It’s alright
You’ll be fine
Baby, I’m in control
Take the pain
Take the pleasure
I’m the master of both
Close your eyes
Not your mind
Let me into your soul
I’ma work ya ’til your totally blown

No escaping when I start
Once I’m in I own your heart
There’s no way ‘ta ring the alarm
So hold on until it’s over

Oh, do you know what you got into?
Can you handle what I’m ’bout to do?
‘Cause it’s about to get rough for you
I’m here for your entertainment

Oh, I bet you thought that I was soft and sweet
‘Ya fallen angel swept ya off your feet
Well I’m about to turn up the heat
I’m here for your entertainment

Oh oh… mmm
Entertainment
Oh oh… Oh entertainment
I’m here for your entertainment

Oohh
Do you like what you see?
Woah
Let me entertain ya ’till you scream

Oh, do you know what you got into?
Can you handle what I’m ’bout to do?
‘Cause it’s about to get rough for you
I’m here for your entertainment

Oh, I bet you thought that I was soft and sweet (bet ya thought)
‘Ya fallen angel swept ya off your feet
Well I’m about to turn up the heat (turn up the heat)
I’m here for your entertainment

From CNN: Lambert says man-on-man kiss at AMA happened 'in the moment'

________________

UPDATE, November 24, 2009: Adam Lambert's scheduled appearance on Good Morning America tomorrow has been cancelled.
TVNewser has learned ABC News canceled the concert after Lambert's sexually charged performance at the American Music Awards Sunday night.

...ABC, which aired the awards show, received about 1,500 phone calls from people complaining about the performance, a number ABC calls "moderate."

An ABC News spokesperson tells TVNewser, "given his controversial live performance on the AMAs we were concerned about airing a similar concert so early in the morning."

> Update / 1:13pmET: Almost as quickly as GMA canceled Lambert, the CBS Early Show added him to the lineup. Lambert will discuss the controversial AMA appearance and will perform live tomorrow morning.

________________

From Rolling Stone: "Adam Lambert Loses 'Good Morning America' Gig, Will Perform on 'Early Show'"
It’s not all bad news for the Wild Idol, however: Lambert will instead perform on tomorrow’s episode of CBS’ The Early Show. It’ll be a double dose of Lambert on CBS tomorrow, as he also recorded a performance yesterday at New York’s Ed Sullivan Theatre that will be broadcast tomorrow night on The Late Show With David Letterman. In an interview with Ryan Seacrest, Lambert indicated he wasn’t taking ABC’s decision to nix his morning appearance personally, adding, “Obviously I respect their decision, they gotta do what they gotta do. It’s too bad, I think there were a lot of fans who were excited to come see me. They probably had a lot of pressure coming at them from certain people who weren’t happy about it. I don’t necessarily agree with it, but they need to do what they need to do.”

...While it appears ABC will likely avoid a fine for Lambert’s “Full Frontal Glambgasm” on Sunday night, the network didn’t want to risk accumulating more complaints and irritating comparatively more sensitive early-morning advertisers.

It remains unclear whether Lambert himself had anything to do with the cancellation, as he told Rolling Stone that any editing of his AMAs performance would qualify as “discrimination” on the part of ABC. The oral sex simulation from Lambert’s “For Your Entertainment” was edited out for the show’s West Coast feed.

Discrimination?

That's ridiculous.
